Abstract
Aging is a human life stage with several physical and psychosocial consequences. Physical activity can provide benefits throughout the whole life course, with particular advantages in the quality of life at the third age. In Brazil, physical activity community interventions have been gaining ground in the last few years, but systematization about the role of these interventions is scarce. The purpose of this chapter is to characterize the role of physical activity community interventions in the quality of life of elderly people in Brazil. To achieve this, the results of this chapter are divided into two topics: 1) The characterization of the main physical activity community interventions for elderly people in Brazil and 2) The role of physical activity community interventions in Brazil. What is the evidence concerning the quality of life of elderly people? The Third Age Open Universities and physical activity programs by the Multidisciplinary Primary Care Teams at the level of Family Health Strategy are the main settings in the country. These programs offer community interventions for this specific population in all five regions in Brazil. Additionally, they incorporate socialization, inclusion, wellbeing, and quality of life as their work philosophy. More studies are needed to broaden the evidence regarding the interventions conducted in these spaces and strengthen the importance of physical activity community programs for elderly people in Brazil.
