Abstract

This chapter addresses the question of whether a single broadly-tuned mechanism underlies the contrast sensitivity function. Direct physiological and anatomical data support psychophysical evidence that states that the overall behavioral CSF is made up of multiple subunits or channels with fairly narrow spatial frequency tuning. Channel tuning characteristics, whether size or spatial frequency is the better description of the relevant visual spatial dimension, and whether cells respond to spatial frequency components are discussed.
