Abstract

This chapter addresses the general question of how the visual system knows where something is. The visual system is sensitive to the spatial phase of patterns under some conditions, and in many of the situations in which spatial frequency channels have been studied, the phase as well as the spatial frequency of the patterns, is critical. Some of the evidence for phase specificity is discussed. It is shown that phase sensitivity does not seem to be present under certain conditions.
