Abstract

The chapter explores the artwork Lygophilia by Robertina Šebjanič, which examines the connection between the animal axolotl and its habitat. The artwork focuses on how the axolotl’s natural environment in Mexico City has been lost and has become a research animal in laboratories worldwide. The chapter looks at the changes in the axolotl’s habitat in Mexico City throughout history and investigates the ontological link between the animal and its surroundings. It also discusses the role of the axolotl as an epistemic artifact in animal studies in laboratories. Overall, the chapter provides an insightful analysis of the intricate and interdependent relationship between animals and their habitats.
