Abstract

Other beliefs, other funerary practices : the two states of Tomb 2 in the necropolis of Anfouchi at Alexandria. The cemetery of Anfouchi at Alexandria, of the Lagid period, is characterised by a mix of Greek and Egyptian elements, both in terms of the architecture of the tombs and of their decoration. Since their discovery, several scholars have pondered the reasons for this multicultural character and the ethnic origin of the occupants. It will be shown here that Tomb 2, the best known of the cemetery, passed through two successive states : initially in “ Greek style”, it went through a second “ Egyptian” phase, which entailed modifications to the architecture and the decoration. This second phase is explained by a change in the religious beliefs and the funerary practices (mumification). One may reflect upon the social group of the new occupant.
