An Analysis on the Possibility of Union between Heaven and Man in Confucianism
Abstract
In recent years, the "Heaven" concept of the controversy are two major categories, first is the possibility of this concept as the "core concept of Chinese philosophy," the controversy, holding the pros and cons and recent advocates in favor of those who do Heaven the development of China's main line of philosophical thinking; opponents advocate of Heaven, "the exact meaning of" We can not grasp, and then against the relevant claim. The second controversy occurred in the "day" meaning the difference between settings, focusing on the formation of a "natural environment" and the emphasis on "ethical values" two kinds of thinking. Those which tend to the natural environment, emphasizing the Chinese philosophy of "harmony between man," the concept of Chinese philosophy in the hope to demonstrate the value of modern society; the other hand, tend to "ethical values" of scholars adhere to the "moral life of the school," this The original meaning of the concept, opposed because of "modern environmental demands" of the needs of hard to change the traditional meaning of Heaven. This will be the axis for the analysis of the Confucian text, the two types of disputes through the methodology of the review were set up with their views may be the background, and in what state will fall into the concept of crisis can not lead to Heaven. Conclusion will be that in the interpretation of the history of modern Chinese philosophy, methodology of Yan Ming through this "concept of the establishment of the philosophical background," and explains how to locate "the right of the theoretical position of the concept of day," This paper argues that the course of this research is a necessary condition for resolving such disputes. the idea of "union between heaven and man" gives rise to two types of controversies: the first is concerned with whether the idea in question is a central concept of Chinese philosophy; some believe that it forms the main line of development in Chinese philosophy, while others reject this opinion and believe that the precise meaning of union can never be grasped. The second controversy concerns the connotation of "heaven", the emphasis of which can be placed either on the natural environment or on the value of ethics. Some scholars who stress natural environment suggest that the relationship between heaven and man is harmonious in order to manifest the modem value of Chinese philosophy, whereas others, focusing on the ethical aspect, insist that its original content consists in the moral nature of "heaven". Thus understood, they oppose any modification of the idea of union in order to meet the need for modem environment-protection awareness. This paper, based on Confucian texts, attempts to methodically scrutinize these two types of controversies in order to demonstrate the background which forms these two opposite opinions and elucidate the precarious situation in which these two opinions may lead to the impossibility of union between heaven and man. The route from illustrating the "philosophical background from which ideas originate" to establishing "the theoretically appropriate position of heaven" is the process that we shall follow in order to bring about a solution to these controversies
