Abstract

This work deals with the role of Islam as it relates to the social, political and economic structures and processes, and the particular problems of national unity and political stability which Nigeria has yet to achieve. ;Nigeria, the "Giant" of Africa, has been blessed with both human and natural resources, which could have led Nigeria into greatness if they had been properly managed. Most political, economic and social analysts have consistently blamed the leadership for all Nigeria's predicaments. Other analysts, however, think that the "elite," because of their greediness, selfishness and self-centeredness, have made Nigeria what it is in the nineties. ;Islamic principles and specifications theoretically, are capable of resolving problems confronting a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society. Past and present leaders have failed to create a just society by eradicating corruption, social injustice, indiscipline, nepotism, and tribalism. The only path left open for Nigeria is that of religion, which should be considered seriously. ;In light of the complexity of Nigerian society and the lack of trustworthy data, this work has used historical documentation approach various books, journals, and newspapers. The result of this approach indicates that most of the problems that have engulfed Nigeria are rooted in the secular political, economic, and educational systems that were arbitrarily imposed on a newly "born" society by the force of a colonial administration. ;An Islamic approach to achieving national identity and loyalty can help draw people beyond ethnic and tribal loyalty. Because the basic concern is a mobilization of Nigerian energies for national reconstruction, Islamic resources for national political leadership in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society should be considered in good faith
