Le long règlement religieux trouvé à Marmarini, au nord-est de Larissa (Thessalie), a déjà donné lieu, depuis sa publication, à plusieurs articles qui tentent d’éclairer ce texte difficile. Dans la présente contribution, les auteurs proposent de nouvelles lectures et une nouvelle traduction, ce qui les conduit à suggérer de nouvelles interprétations sur certains aspects du rituel de ce sanctuaire consacré à une divinité orientale qui n’est jamais nommée.

L’article étudie certaines particularités qui apparaissent dans le cadre religieux de l’époque archaique et classique, et qui sont associées à l’αὔλειος θύρα, à savoir le seuil qui sépare l’espace public de la cité et l’espace privé de la maison,dans trois textes représentatifs : le VIe livre d’Hérodote, la 1re Néméenne de Pindare et l’Hymne homérique à Hermès. L’étude des rencontres qui ont lieu devant l’auleios thyra conduisent à une transposition du sacré d’un espace à l’autre. Par l’auleios thyra, un (...) élément de la vie religieuse publique pénètre dans l’espace privé et en ressort aussitôt. Pendant ce temps, à l’intérieur de l’espace privé, une procédure d’appropriation s’opère, seulement profitable pour l’individu et non pour la collectivité, mais qui est finalement reconnu et exploité en public.Αὔλειοςθύρα and Religious Context: Between the Public and the Private. This article tries to focus on certain particular aspects regarding the significance of the αὔλειοςθύρα in the religious frame of the archaic and classical period relying on the textual evidence offered by three characteristic relevant passages: Herodotus’s Book 6, Pindar’s Nemean 1 and the Homeric hymnTo Hermes. By examining these texts one can fairly assume that through the transition from the “public space” to the “private place” and vice versa achieved by crossing the auleios thyra, an element of the public religious life enters the private home life and leaves again. In this transition, the sacred element of public religious life is transposed towards the private space of the individual and, in so doing, is appropriated by him/her. This private appropriation of the public religious context ends by providing a personal interest that is finally recognised and shown in public. (shrink)

Telles sont les lignes de force de cet ouvrage qui tente, à partir d'une présentation des Écrits, d'une relecture de la thèse de 1932 et des premiers articles sur la paranoïa, de cerner, de façon accessible au profane les principaux concepts inventés ou repris par Lacan. En retrouvant leurs sources, en restituant le contexte dont ils portent la marque et qu'ils ont à leur tour influencé, il replace le débat sur son véritable terrain : celui d'une expérience commune de la souffrance placée sous le signe d'un désir en quête de l'objet de sa réalisation. Une haute stèle de marbre opisthographe trouvée il y a quelques années à Marmarini, au nord-est de Larissa (Thessalie), propose un long texte de 54 et 82 lignes aujourd’hui lisibles. En s’appuyant sur cette inscription du milieu du iie s. av. J.-C., qui d’une part comporte un calendrier cultuel et de l’autre un certain nombre de prescriptions touchant aux rites, le présent article propose une présentation de l’aspect probable du sanctuaire (péribole, temple, autel etc.), une liste des divinités concernées (...) — Artémis Phylakè comme divinité principale, mais d’autres divinités grecques et surtout plusieurs divinités d’origine orientale jusqu’alors inconnues — et des remarques sur les modalités d’un culte qui était sans doute un culte à mystères. Ce document, par son contenu, par les détails qu’il donne, est une trouvaille exceptionnelle en Thessalie. (shrink)

In spite of his clear and deliberate distinction between philosophical and religious discourse, Ricoeur lets these two aspects of his thought interweave with respect to the deep "conviction" motiving it. The idea of “attestation”, considered as the "password" granting access to his last "hermeneutics of the self", testifies to this in particular. This term, while containing a religious connotation, refers to what Heidegger calls Fundamentalontologie , in which attestation ( Bezeugung ) is totally de-theologized to indicate how Dasein assumes its (...) own death. But Ricoeur only incorporates this notion into his thought by making it undergo a profound modification. Ricoeur replaces “being–toward–death” with “remaining alive until…”, which allows him to recognize “the religious in common.” How can we develop a conception of the philosophy of religion from this winding process? Peu de philosophes ont autant insisté sur la différence entre la lettre et l’esprit d’une philosophie que Fichte. Breazeale prend Fichte au mot concernant cette distinction et tente de reconstituer ce qu’il appelle l’esprit de la philosophie d’Iéna, soit la première version de la philosophie que Fichte construisit entre 1793 et 1799. L’auteur montre combien Fichte est loin de la caricature de l’idéalisme débridé, interprétation qui prévalut chez les commentateurs classiques comme dans une certaine philosophie analytique. Il montre aussi comment (...) une vulgate plus contemporaine qui tend à surinvestir l’aspect religieux (en valorisant notamment ce qu’on appelle la dernière philosophie) manque le sens et l’esprit de la philosophie d’Iéna et renoue ainsi avec l’interprétation traditionnelle d’un Fichte dogmatique et métaphysicien. By using principles from a variety of scientific disciplines, Yale Professor Samuel Wilkinson provides a framework for human evolution that reveals an overarching purpose to our existence. Generations have been taught that evolution implies there is no overarching purpose to our existence, that life has no fundamental meaning. We are merely the accumulation of tens of thousands of intricate molecular accidents. Some scientists take this logic one step further, suggesting that evolution is intrinsically atheistic and goes against the concept of (...) God. But is this true? With respect to our evolution, nature seems to have endowed us with competing dispositions, what Wilkinson calls the dual potential of human nature. We are pulled in different directions: selfishness and altruism, aggression and cooperation, lust and love. When we couple this with the observation that we possess a measure of free will, all this strongly implies there is a universal purpose to our existence. This purpose, at least one of them, is to choose between the good and evil impulses that nature has created within us. Our life is a test. This is a truth, as old as history it seems, that has been espoused by so many of the world's religions. This volume attempts to show why ontology matters for a proper grasp of issues in bioethics. -/- Contemporary discussions on bioethics often focus on seeking solutions for a wide range of issues that revolve around persons. The issues in question are multi-layered, involving such diverse aspects as the metaphysical/ontological, personal, medical, moral, legal, cultural, social, political, religious, and environmental. In navigating through such a complex web of issues, it has been said that the central problems philosophers and bioethicists face are (...) ethical in nature. In this regard, biomedical sciences and technological breakthroughs take a leading role in terms of shaping the sorts of questions that give rise to ethical problems. For example, is it ethical to keep terminally ill patients alive on dialysis machines or artificial ventilators? Is it ethical to take someone’s vital organs upon death and transplant them into another person’s body without any prior consent from a deceased person? Reproductive techniques also raise complicated ethical issues involving in vitro fertilization, contraceptives, prenatal testing, abortions, and genetic enhancements. Moreover, biomedical issues raise ethical problems in regards to research on human subjects, stem cell research, and enhancement biotechnology. The beginning and end of life issues bring up their own complicated ethical conundrums involving, among other things, terminating life support and euthanasia. -/- This book approaches such complex bioethical questions by engaging in ground-level debates about the ontology of persons. In other words, the work describes the human response to the divine gift that precedes every human initiation.

This book examines the meaning of some of the most basic terms we use in both confessional and secular discussion about morality and religion. Is there any credible and distinctive meaning in what we refer to as "right and wrong" and "God"? What do we even mean by meaning itself? Outside specialist academic discourse these terms are rarely examined in depth. Here they are probed with as much rigor as possible, but also accessibly. As a collection of essays each section is freestanding. But there is also a clear overall connecting argument. Sacred Rituals and Humane Death critically analyzes the civilizing nature of the underlying fundamental concept of "humaneness" in contemporary discourses around modern meat and animal ethics. As religious methods of animal slaughter, such as the halal method in Islam, as well as the practice of religious animal sacrifice, are sometimes categorized as barbaric in recent debates, the civilizing narrative of progress leads supposedly to more humane adaptation of methods and practices of animal curation and slaughter. This volume argues that the (...) shift toward modern meat does not constitute a shift toward less pain and suffering as purported by supporters of contemporary methods, particularly mass agriculture. Rather, it is a shift in what is considered as acceptable versus unacceptable pain and suffering. In this work, the author analyzes the concealment and distancing that characterize modern meat production, uncovering the "acceptable" pain and suffering involved in these procedures heralded as "progress" and advocating for a retrieval of earlier, tradition-bound practices rooted in religious, cultural, and ethical respect of animals and their important and sacred roles in sacrifice.
