Wenn zwei Philosophen sich treffen, so besagt ein Diktum Jean-Paul Sartres, sei es am vernünftigsten, wenn sie sich lediglich »Guten Morgen« sagten. Diese Ansicht mag in manchen Fällen sowohl der Vergangenheit als auch der Gegenwart einer gewissen Berechtigung nicht entbehren. Die Auseinandersetzung zwischen Fichte und Schiller allerdings, wie sie in Form eines Briefwechsels vom Sommer 1795 vorliegt, zählt nicht zu diesen Fällen. Trotz, oder gerade aufgrund der Tatsache, daß dieser Briefwechsel, der sogenannte »Horenstreit«, aneinander vorbei verläuft -- wie noch (...) zu zeigen sein wird --, lassen sich die Positionen beider dadurch einerseits deutlicher zueinander in Beziehung setzen. Andererseits können mittels eines solchen Bezuges die Differenzen beider Denker klarer markiert werden. (shrink)

In his essay On the necessary limits in the use of beautiful forms Schiller delineates to what degree beautiful packaging of philosophical thoughts is beneficial, as opposed to cases where it merely masks an inconsistent position—defending his philosophical style in contrast to Fichte’s, therewith taking another step in the Horenstreit. This paper shows how Schiller justifies the seeming paradox why his Aesthetic Education is not as nicely written as one might expect from a poet, and why his insistence on (...) a full development of our sensible and imaginative capacities is not tantamount to a call for replacing textbooks with novels. Our capacity to coordinate reason and sensibility finds its limits in women, who are deemed unable to reason sufficiently and are forced to resort to beautiful form alone. Schiller relegates learned women to the sidelines of literary discussion, setting the tone for German academia. (shrink)

L’article propose d’éclairer le différend philosophique entre Schiller et Fichte, en mettant en évidence leurs conceptions respectives de la Bildung et le lien qui s’y noue entre esthétique et politique. L’objectif est de confronter la philosophie schillérienne de la Bildung développée dans ses Lettres sur l’éducation esthétique de l’homme à la reprise à la fois positive et restrictive que fait Fichte, principalement dans ses écrits de la période d’Iéna, de certaines thématiques de cet ouvrage et de la stratégie de résistance (...) culturelle qui s’y déploie, pour mettre en lumière le rapport inverse qui opère, chez l’un et l’autre, entre esthétisation de la politique et politisation de l’esthétique.
