This paper articulates a methodological strategy for creating a “conceptual home” whose aim is the enabling and promotion of Latin American feminist philosophy in the context of Latin American feminist theory's concern for the relationship between theory and practice. The author argues that philosophy as a discipline is still too compromised by masculine-dominant, Anglocentric, and Eurocentric ways of representing knowledge such that discursive and ideological impediments make it difficult to conceive and develop ways of (...) feminist theorizing that arise from an interpellation of the philosopher by the Latin American conditions affecting her social and cultural life. The author offers a fourfold approach to grounding knowledge, based on the principles of pursuing a critical approach to knowledge, a concern for the relationship of theory and practice, an orientation toward progressive political projects of freedom and liberation in the context of Latin American history and politics, and a transformative politics of culture. It is argued that through such specific methodological concerns, Latin American feminist philosophy can attain a distinct identity and stop depending for its articulation on paradigms of knowledge whose premises are not necessarily best attuned to understand the issues it must confront in its sociocultural practice. : "We are invisible": this melancholic assertion alludes to the "non-place" that we occupy as Latin American philosophers or, in general, as philosophers in the Spanish or Portuguese languages. We tend to survive as mere ghosts teaching courses and writing texts, perhaps some memorable ones, which, however, seldom spark anybody's interest, among other reasons, because almost no one takes the time to read them. In saying this, I do not mean to call upon a useless pathos, nor do (...) I mean to complain, or thrust forth a challenge. I am simply confirming a fact, and a widely acknowledged one at that. [Recipient of the 2024 Inter-American Philosophy Award] Philosophers have recently debated whether the social identity category "Latinx" picks out a race (Alcoff 2006), an ethnicity (Gracia 2008), or something else altogether (Arango and Burgos 2021). Rather than defending one or several of these ways of understanding US Latinx as a political or social group, my paper focuses on the personal social identity turmoil young US Latinx people feel and explores the history of inter-American thought to seek a (...) remedy for it. Three prominent American philosophers – José Martí, Alain Locke, and Emilio Uranga – combine to teach us that, while the US Latinx strives for belonging, they find themselves in a situation of unbelonging. The tension that results from the desire to belong but the reality of unbelonging produces a deep-seated anxiety that has come to characterize the US Latinx condition. I suggest that an effective tool for coping with this anxiety, affirming our identity, and building community is the activity of doing inter-American, Latin American, and Latinx Philosophy. (shrink)

This paper argues that liberationist ethics can contribute method and content to religious discourse on peace and war. The christological grounding for this ethic forces us to take more seriously the will toward peace as capable of being progressively realized in the face of structural sin. Moreover, it seeks to address a Christian audience first that may then join others in prophetic denunciation of cultural attitudes that embody social sin by masking structural violence. Directives for state action may be modified (...) through cultural actors; the state is not usually the immediate addressee. While I am sympathetic to Professor Nuccetelli’s conception of Latin American philosophy as applied philosophy, I tried to underscore a tension that exists between those of us who do philosophy from an analytic perspective broadly construed, and those who engage in postmodernist, decoloniality, and liberationist perspectivism. It covers different issues, such as vulnerability, abortion, biomedical research with human subjects, environment, exploitation, commodification, reproductive medicine, among others. A durable question in Latin American thought is whether it could amount to a characteristically Latin American philosophy. I argue that, if, as is now widely conceded, there is a role for philosophical analysis in thinking about problems that arise in applied subjects, such as bioethics, environmental ethics, and feminism, then why not also in Latin American thought? After all, the focus of Hispanic thinkers has often been upon the issues that arise in (...) their own experiences of the world, and they make up a diverse group of peoples related by very idiosyncratic ethnic and historical connections. In this paper, I build on Wittgenstein’s metaphor of a toolbox to introduce the metaphor of ‘tool confusion’ – how differing conceptual constructs may be applied, or misapplied, to one another and the effect that such applications have on the advancement of management theory. Moving beyond metaphor, I investigate a theory of management through two specific philosophical lenses (Popper and Lyotard). This analysis tests both the theory and the philosophies with regard to how each philosophy may be applied as (...) a tool to advance theory towards more effective application. Preliminary conclusions confirm that the application of partial philosophies is not as useful as the application of complete philosophies. Deeper contemplation, however, suggests that there is no upper limit to the completeness of philosophies. Thus, the problem of completeness is inescapable. In place of completeness, I explore the use of perceptual tools that are more specific, foundational and concise. Engaging in a second investigation, I use structures of logic (circular, linear, branching and co-causal) to investigate the subject theory. This investigation suggests at least two important insights relating to the structure of theory and the fuzziness of theory. Combined, these investigations and related conversations suggest rigorous methods for advancing theories and a more normative role for the philosophy of management that will support the accelerated advancement of management theory and practice. This paper argues that a new genre of therapy has appeared in the arena of contemporary spiritual alternative healing, which expresses an outlook never-before-seen in the history of medicine: postmodern therapy. Postmodern therapeutic methods express a popularization of postmodernist philosophy in regards to language’s role in the therapeutic process, expressing a novel cosmology. These methods are illustrated in the paper, and then analyzed in comparison to two other groups of methods: traditional/occult magic, and modern medicine. Finally, (...) PTMs are characterized as neo-magic, bearing features similar to modernistic outlook on the one hand, and features similar to pre-modern magic outlook on the other hand. Attention to the details of putatively obvious examples of philosophy-as-worldview within Latin America give us reasons to be skeptical about the taxonomy that gives us the category of philosophy-as-worldview. Among the examples that suggest difficulties for this way of thinking about the philosophical enterprise are 19th century Mexican ethnolinguistics, contemporary efforts to reconstruct historical and contemporary Indigenous thought, and 20th century efforts to articulate regional ontologies within Latin America. However, reflection on these cases also point to (...) a different project worth considering, namely, a taxonomy of wisdom- and knowledge-focused practices that might allow a different way of drawing distinctions between kinds of “philosophies”. One of the many research projects of Jaakko Hintikka was entitled “Logical tools for human thinking and their history”. This is in fact an apt summary of the lifetime work of this master logician who developed several new methods and systems in mathematical and philosophical logic, among them distributive normal forms, model sets, possible-worlds semantics, epistemic logic, doxastic logic, inductive logic, semantic information, game-theoretical semantics, interrogative approach to inquiry, and independence-friendly logic. He applied them to study problems in (...) philosophy of language, formal epistemology, and philosophy of science. He combined systematic work with novel interpretations of important historical figures like Aristotle, Leibniz, Kant, Peirce, and Wittgenstein. Hintikka was one of the most cited analytic philosophers, and he influenced logic and philosophy also as a successful teacher and the long-time editor of the journal Synthese. (shrink)

Standpoint epistemology, the view that social identity is relevant to knowledge-acquisition, has been consigned to the margins of mainstream philosophy. In part, this is because the principles of standpoint epistemology are taken to be in opposition to those which guide traditional epistemology. One goal of this paper is to tease out the characterization of traditional epistemology that is at odds with standpoint epistemology. The characterization of traditional epistemology that I put forth is one which endorses the thesis of intellectualism, (...) the view that knowledge does not depend on non-epistemic features. I then suggest that two further components – the atomistic view of knowers and aperspectivalism – can be usefully interpreted as supporting features of intellectualism. A further goal of this paper is to show that we ought to resist this characterization of traditional epistemology. I use pragmatic encroachment as a dialectical tool to motivate the denial of intellectualism, and consequently, the denial of both supporting components. I then attempt to show how it is possible to have a view, similar to pragmatic encroachment, that takes social identity, rather than stakes, to be the feature that makes a difference to what a person is in a position to know. For Latin American philosophers, the quality of their own philosophy is a recurrent issue. Why hasn’t it produced any internationally recognized figure, tradition, or movement? Why is it mostly unknown inside and outside Latin America? Although skeptical answers to these questions are not new, they have recently shifted to some critical-thinking competences and dispositions deemed necessary for successful philosophical theorizing. Latin American philosophers are said to lack, for example, originality in problem-solving, problem-making, argumentation, and (...) to some extent, interpretation. Or does the problem arise from their vices of “arrogant reasoning?” On my view, all of these answers are incomplete, and some even self-defeating. Any methodological application in the field of philosophy for children implies study of the progression of the thought processes and practical learning capacities. Firstly, from a point of view of the method, which in order to be a valid construction must be based on sound paradigmatic structures and thereby be applicable in practice. These requirements both theoretical and practical are integral and demand together a means of identification of the progression of thought processes, one which is imbued both with (...) a dynamic conception of thought and with a practical conception of learning. The dialectic conflict enables this progression to be charted. It is an essential concept of both the Lipman theories of child philosophy and socio-constructivism, while at the same time remaining in-dissociable from pragmatic linguistics. This federating paradigmatic position is the essential element in constituting a tool which is capable of accounting for the progression of thought in the learning process in the research community. Thereby it becomes possible to conceive of a framework both methodological and conceptual which constructs the dialectic conflict along with the actual dialectic thought, revealing a basic contradiction. The learning process of thought itself therefore reverberates with the exercise of thinking, itself rendered by language as an interlocutory process. This analysis of the progression of conceptual thought in child philosophy can therefore enable the construction of a method only if it is in schematised form and is capable of taking on the cohesion essential to the dialectic conflict. The schematisation of a dialectic progression can therefore be recognised as a tool which enables the constituting process of conceptual thought to be identified. This schematisation is made up of a system of classification marks recording the common denominators making up the prerequisites of thought : differentiation of single and multiple, identical and different, relative and absolute and the part from the whole. This first instalment describes the schematic tool, firstly by presenting the constituting elements, then listing the operative procedures, to conclude with an example of its application. It prefigures a more generalised application which would focus on a methodology which would satisfy more fully the solidarity of its founding requirements.Identifier la progression de la pensée, dans la pratique et l’apprentissage du philosopher, constitue une préoccupation inhérente à toute application méthodologique en philosophie pour enfants. Du point de vue de la méthode, tout d’abord, celle-ci exige pour sa validité constitutive de reposer sur une structure paradigmatique autant fondatrice qu’apte à garantir son essence même, soit son applicabilité. L’exigence théorétique et l’exigence pratique s’appellent donc mutuellement pour fonder la nécessité d’un instrument d’identification de la progression de la pensée, qui soit imprégné autant d’une conception dynamique du penser que d’une conception pratique de l’apprendre à penser. Le conflit dialectique permet de structurer cette progression. Il est au coeur autant des fondements lipmanniens de philosophie pour enfants que dans ceux du socioconstructivisme, tout en étant indissociable de toute linguistique pragmatique. Cette position paradigmatique fédératrice en fait le domaine privilégié de la constitution d’un instrument qui soit à mène de rendre compte d’une progression de la pensée dans le processus d’apprentissage de la communauté de recherche. À partir de là, il devient envisageable d’entreprendre la mise en place d’un cadre tant méthodologique que conceptuel qui conçoit le conflit dialectique en solidarité avec la pensée dialectique elle-même, qui se dévoile aporétique. L’apprentissage du penser est ainsi mis en résonance avec l’exercice du penser, lui-même rendu par le langage en communauté interlocutoire. L’analyse interlocutoire de la progression de la pensée conceptuelle en philosophie pour enfants peut donc, sur cette base, permettre la constitution d’une méthode qui, si elle est schématisée formellement, peut être en mesure d’assumer la cohésion fondée par le conflit dialectique. La schématisation d’une progression dialectique apparaît ainsi comme un instrument permettant l’identification du processus constitutif de la pensée conceptuelle. Cette schématisation se compose d’un système de cotation signalant les dénominateurs communs constituant la possibilité même de la pensée : l’un et le multiple, l’identique et le différent, le relatif et l’absolu et enfin la partie et le tout. Ce premier volet présente cet instrument schématique, tout d’abord en exposant son processus constitutif, puis en déroulant son protocole opératoire, pour terminer sur un exemple d’application. Maddy proposes an austere form of naturalism called 'Second Philosophy', using the persona of an idealized inquirer, and she puts this method into practice in illuminating reflections on logical truth, philosophy of mathematics, and metaphysics.

The public University is an actor capable of energizing local ecosystems to transform the territory, and open innovation is its instrument of connection with the environment. University open innovation was studied through factor analysis by the principal components’ method in Mexico and Colombia. Data were collected in 54 research groups of two public universities. The analysis showed that the first six components explain 82.479% of the variance of the university open innovation model. The coincidences were evidenced in the factors that (...) affect the general process of open innovation in Universities of Mexico and in Colombia. It was concluded that open innovation is a relevant mechanism for linking the University with its environment. (shrink)
