Dans la Consolatio philosophiae, Boèce infléchit en direction de l’éthique son interrogation. La doctrine de la liberté qu’il propose dans ce cadre ne rompt toutefois pas avec la conception de la contingence qu’il avait élaborée dans le cadre de ses commentaires d’Aristote, plus spécialement du chapitre IX du De interpretatione. Si la volonté de mettre en avant la liberté humaine manifeste une inspiration chrétienne, l’élaboration de la doctrine correspondante suggère ainsi une reprise de sources antiques non spécifiquement chrétiennes.

Le rêve et l’imagination jouent un rôle fondamental dans la démarche de Philosophie personnifiée, qui, au début de l’ouvrage de Boèce, apparaît au prisonnier sous la forme d’une personnification et entreprend de le reconduire progressivement au bien suprême. Notre enquête suivra trois lignes directrices : tel un rêve, les illusions et les images trompent le prisonnier et l’empêchent de discerner le vrai bien. Cependant, Philosophie valorise l’ imagination reproductrice, dont elle fait le premier degré d’un parcours cognitif ascensionnel. Pour élever (...) le prisonnier, et le lecteur avec lui, jusqu’au terme de ce parcours téléologique, elle recourt enfin à l’ imagination créatrice, nourrie des ressources littéraires. (shrink)

Il problema filosofico di Boezio, già chiaro sin dalla comparsa sulla scena di Filosofia, risiede nel tentativo di chiarire come si possano avere conoscenze stabili, cioè necessarie, di cose mutevoli, cioè contingenti, ed è un problema di coesistenza tra le une e le altre. Una lettura filosofica che, trasposta in termini teologici, porta a questa idea di creazione: un mondo contingente creato da un Dio, in sé necessario, che nel momento in cui crea lo fa in relazione ai suoi modi (...) di conoscere, cioè necessitando in modo condizionato le cose esistenti. In tal modo, egli fonda la nostra conoscenza del mondo e quella di noi stessi che il mondo vediamo, pensiamo e giudichiamo mentre vediamo, pensiamo e giudichiamo di vedere, pensare e giudicare il mondo.La storia della Consolatio Philosophiae è la storia tragica di quell’ipotetico generale, di cui scrive Musil, che per ragioni strategiche manda dei battaglioni alla morte sicura, ed è un assassino se si pensa che si tratta di migliaia di figli di mamma; ma diventa subito qualcos’altro se si connette il fatto con altri pensieri, per esempio con la necessità del sacrificio o la brevità della vita. È poi la storia tragica della presa d’atto di quanto sia utile ma falso il tentativo di chi considera la vita che si presenta dinnanzi come un dato fisso e fermo. E lo è perché è la contemporanea storia del tragico tentativo di fondare il pensiero sul mondo a partire dalla consapevolezza che il mondo potrebbe mutare in ogni istante in tutte le direzioni, o almeno in una qualunque di esse. Die Untersuchung der wallonischen consolatio-Übersetzung führte zur Entdeckung und Neudatierung eines lateinischen consolatio-Kommentars, der auch von Jean de Meun benutzt wurde. Somit kann durch Gegenüberstellung von Vorlage und Übersetzung an einem konkreten Beispiel Einblick in die Übersetzungspraxis im Mittelalter gewonnen werden.

The author explores the views of two famous philosophers and one-time lovers about the self-other relation, particularly in the context of romantic love. In Being and nothingness , Jean-Paul Sartre famously wrote that any mode of relation between two subjectivities is doomed to fail. One of these modes is love, which is the desire to possess another freedom without altering its fundamental characteristic as a freedom. In contrast to Sartre, meanwhile, Simone de Beauvoir hints at the possibility of non-possessive reciprocal (...) relations in her philosophical novel, She came to stay . In light of such considerations as the relationship between love and the construction of self, and that between love and freedom, Dela Cruz evaluates the respective merits of the two thinkers’ views. She concludes the paper with a brief analysis of the lyrics of a contemporary song performed by Seal, entitled “Love’s Divine.” The song has an existential theme as it links love with the naming of another subjectivity: “Give me love, love is what I need to help me know my name.”. Frankfurt’s “Alternate Possibilities and Moral Responsibility” made an important intervention into the literature on moral responsibility via a classical Frankfurt-type example, arguing that “the principle of alternate possibilities” is false. This paper argues that classical Frankfurt-type examples fail due to the use of agentic counterfactual interventions who lack agency. Using finite state machines to illustrate, I show the models that classical Frankfurt-type examples must use and why they are incongruent with leeway incompatibilist beliefs—the motivating interlocutor for classical Frankfurt-type examples. I (...) then argue that returning agency to the agentic counterfactual intervention also returns alternate possibilities to the actual sequence of events, undermining a core premise of Frankfurt’s. Lastly, I show why a number of potential counterarguments should fail to persuade the leeway incompatibilist. (shrink)

Procura-se aqui fazer uma análise histórica, filológica e filosófica do momento anterior a 1265 - data da tradução da Política - para mostrar como aquele momento influenciou a maneira como a obra foi recebida no Ocidente.

Adrian Vlot used a lot of information when he wrote his article. I do not intend this brief presentation to give additional information or remarks on the topic. My aim is to support his ideas. I am a mathematician, physicist and theologian. I interpret science as a human activity describing and understanding the phenomena of the created universe based on observation, explaining the relationships in the universe afterwards and, in addition, discovering further areas via human intellectual abilities. In my interpretation (...) technology is something through which man makes use of the experience, knowledge, discovered relationships and laws in practice to create new tools or new materials which facilitate further research. That is how science and technology are related. In historical chronology, technology preceded science but later science also achieved results preceding their application in practice. Among others, the chronological intertwining is represented by Faraday and Maxwell’s activities. (shrink)

Entre éstas se ha subrayado el influjo del modelo antropológico de Antíoco de Ascalón, conocido a través de Varrón y Cicerón. Este ensayo rastrea las huellas del "De philosophia" de Varrón en los escritos de Agustín anteriores a "De ciuitate Dei", para evaluar la medida y el peso de esta presencia.

Une thèse dominante et assez peu discutée aujourd’hui veut que l’avènement de la science classique implique une distinction radicale entre « connaissance » et « interprétation ». L’âge classique serait celui où la connaissance, définie par son univocité, et l’interprétation, nécessairement plurielle et inadéquate, diffèrent, tant par leurs méthodes (quant elles en ont une) que par leurs objets. Avicenna's Philosophia Prima occupies a relevant place in the history of metaphysics. In its first four chapters, we find a definition of metaphysics as wisdom and the more certain philosophy that highlights the scientific character that Avicenna seeks to give metaphysics. The elucidation of the subject matter of this discipline is developed in the debate among its Arab sources, but at the same time, it extends in the historical discussion on the place of God and being in metaphysics. Entre 1829 et 1839, le mathématicien américain Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838) publie quatre volumes de la Mécanique Céleste by the Marquis de Laplace, translated with a commentary. Il s’agit d’une traduction de l’astronomie mathématique de Pierre Simon de Laplace parue en France entre 1799 et 1825 et assortie d’un commentaire explicatif. L’ouvrage américain est alors distribué en France comme aucune autre production savante américaine ne l’est au cours du xixe siècle. Cet article cherche à redonner à ce texte la place qui (...) est la sienne dans le cadre des échanges mathématiques franco-américains au xixe siècle orientés des États-Unis vers la France, un sens de transfert des savoirs négligé ou minoré par l’historiographie. Sur le plan intellectuel, il étudie la réception de l’ouvrage auprès des savants français et souligne combien l’auteur américain répond aux manques et aux difficultés du texte d’origine. Sur le terrain matériel, il montre comment les passeurs de sciences, intermédiaires non scientifiques, essentiels dans la transmission du texte entre les mondes savants de Boston et Paris, sont progressivement remplacés par les professionnels de l’édition. I attempt to clarify the specificity of Spinoza’s hermeneutic proposal of the Scripture in the Political-Theological Treatise. In this regard, I assume two levels of analysis in Spinoza interpretation: the historic-critical and the philosophical one. My aim is to find out the relationships between these two levels, and also the differences of Spinoza’s interpretation with others, in particular, that one developed by Lodewijk Meyer in his Philosophia S. Scripturae Interpres.

Bei den korpuskulartheoretischen Erklärungen von Naturphänomenen, wie sie Descartes in den Principia philosophiae vornimmt und im Discours de la methode anspricht, lassen sich zwei verschiedene und nur teilweise miteinander vereinbare Bedeutungsgruppen des Hypothesenbegriffs nachweisen. Sie verbinden sich mit unterschiedlichen Bewertungen des Status von Hypothesen im wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisprozeß. Einerseits findet man eine Verwandtschaft zum heute wissenschaftstheoretisch verbreiteten Verständnis von Hypothesen als positivem und integralem Bestandteil der Naturerkenntnis. Typischer für Descartes' Naturphilosophie ist jedoch die andererseits von ihm vertretene Vorstellung, daß der (...) Umfang des bloß hypothetischen Wissens im Fortgang der Naturerkenntnis zu minimieren sei. Mit dieser Forderung erweist sich Descartes als Vertreter einer neuzeitlichen Wissenschaftsauffassung, die deutlich vom modernen Verzicht auf ein ausschließlich geltendes System der Naturerkenntnis abgehoben ist. The paper re-edits and discusses a medieval text that contains a syncrisis of Plato and Plautus. I argue that, in addition to fragments from lost comedies of Plautus, the text also contains a previously unrecognized fragment of the playwright Pacuvius. The same fragment seems to have been known to Remigius of Auxerre (or his model) when he wrote his commentary on consolatio Philosophiae of Boethius.

Philosophy in Action with Dysfunctional Adolescents: Strengthening Resistance, Preparing Resilience Using Michel Tozzi’s Teaching Matrix. Our contribution is based on research conducted with dysfunctional teenagers, prevented from thinking, in a praxis of resilience assisted by philosophical discussion according to the method of Michel Tozzi. A good distance from a process of modelling thought, it’s question of articulating the process of accompaniment the young person’s by Michel Tozzi didactic model. Based on anthropologically situated discussions in the interrogations of adolescents put into (...) play by means of written materials according to Mathew Lipman’s recommendations, the philosophical discussions method’s that we submit is intended to guide educators to explore the process that hinder the activity of thinking and to engage teenagers in a process of rebounding from their own arguments. We present our method which aims at equipping teenagers with the proper tools of resistance to adversity and resiliency in the face of harmful experiences. (shrink)

El presente artículo presenta la hipótesis de una relación dialogada y fecunda entre la filosofía y la teología, ante la situación de cierto descrédito de la tradición del pensamiento cristiano operado por cierto pensamiento postmoderno antihumanista. Se trata de mostrar como la teología ha actuado como ‘magistra’ de la fi losofía en el sentido socrático: ayudando de forma mayéutica al alma del filósofo. Esta realidad histórico-doctrinal se puede rastrear en no pocos tópicos de la filosofía a través de su historia, (...) que tienen como interlocutor las realidades nacidas de la Revelación como la teología de la creación, la teología sacramental o el dogma de la Encarnación. Von Theoderich zunächst gefördert, dann wegen Hochverrats zum Tode verurteilt, verfasste Boethius seine Schrift im Gefängnis vor seiner Hinrichtung. Sein Werk ist eines der wirkungsmächtigsten der Spätantike und zählt zu den beliebtesten Büchern des Abendlandes überhaupt. Zweifellos war der Autor Christ, doch suchte er Trost und Hoffnung nicht beim Christentum, sondern in der philosophischen Tradition.

Die "Consolatio Philosophiae," spatantikes Meisterwerk des Boethius, fungiert seit ihrer Wiederentdeckung durch Alkuin am Ende des 8. Jahrhunderts als Ausgangspunkt zahlreicher Kommentare und Ubersetzungen, die fur die europaische Geistesgeschichte pragend sind. Dieses Buch beleuchtet eine noch grossenteils unerforschte Texttradition: Franzosische Consolatio-Versionen des Mittelalters und der Fruhen Neuzeit bilden den Gegenstand der Analyse, bei der translatorische Strategien, diskursive Vernetzungen mit anderen Texten und Traditionen sowie sprachhistorische Entwicklungen sichtbar werden. Zur umfassenden Ermittlung komplexer Sinnstiftung werden jeweils historisches Umfeld, Paratextualitat (...) und Textstruktur sowie lexikalische und metrisch-rhetorische Besonderheiten der Ubersetzungen herausgestellt. This paper distinguishes the respective aims of Jaspers's and Heidegger's philosophical enterprises with reference to their radically divergent uses of the key terms. It was always been of the essence of Jasper's concept of philosophy that it « appropriate » tradition and validate its own possibilities in « differentiation » from tradition. Accordingly Heidegger is not concerned, as is Jaspers, over the « gold » of the « perennial philosophy » but, against the background of the « question of Being (...) » , over the « destruction » of Western philosophy as such. Jaspers's philosophy attempts to save philosophy in the 20th century in the face of Heideggers's destruction of the ontologicei heritage. Cet article distingue les buts respectifs de Jaspers et de Heidegger en référence à leurs usages divergents des termes clés. Il est de l'essence de la philosophie selon Jaspers de « s'approprier » la tradition et de mettre en évidence ses propres possibilités en se distinguant d'elle. Heidegger n'est pas concerné comine Jaspers par la philosophia perennis mais par la « question de l'être » , par la destruction de la philosophie occidentale. Jaspers tente de sauver la philosophie du XX e siècle face à la destruction par Heidegger de l'héritage ontologique. (shrink)

La révolution copernicienne a des conséquences cosmologiques sur lesquelles Copernic a été peu disert, et dont il faut attendre Giordano Bruno ou Descartes pour mesurer l’exacte portée. L’aspect le plus spectaculaire de cette révolution post-copernicienne est bien sûr la suppression de la sphère des étoiles fixes. L’article examine cette question sous deux aspects : (i) les conséquences problématiques de l’immobilisation copernicienne de la sphère des fixes par rapport à la fiction théologique d’un ciel empyrée, et (ii) la (vaine) recherche d’une (...) parallaxe stellaire, supposée, chez Kepler, Galilée et Descartes, constituer une preuve a posteriori de la théorie copernicienne. On souligne enfin la grande subtilité de l’argumentation déployée dans les Principia Philosophiae de Descartes (1644) qui utilisent la supposition « arbitraire » de l’empyrée pour renvoyer dos-à-dos les coperniciens strictement géomobilistes, et leurs adversaires tychoniens, qui espéraient, moyennant cette supposition, pouvoir laisser la Terre immobile au centre du monde.
