Does CEO-Auditor Dialect Sharing Impair Pre-IPO Audit Quality? Evidence from China.Xingqiang Du - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 156 (3):699-735.
Using a sample of Chinese to-be-listed firms during the period of 2006–2012, this study examines the influence of CEO-auditor dialect sharing (CADS) on pre-IPO audit quality and further investigates the moderating effects of auditor reputation and audit firm industry specialization. On the basis of information in personal identification cards, this study hand-collects data about CADS, and then provides strong and consistent evidence to show that CADS is significantly positively related with discretionary accruals (the inverse proxy for audit quality), suggesting (...)

The evolution of dialect diversity.Daniel Livingstone - 2002 - In Angelo Cangelosi & Domenico Parisi (eds.), Simulating the Evolution of Language. Springer Verlag. pp. 99--117.
Observations on dialect diversity have been recorded for thousands of years, including Old Testament stories and early writings and literature from around the globe. Language diversity remains the subject of much study today — largely in the related fields of socio-linguistics, historical linguistics and dialectology. One key question is why is there so much difference in dialects. To some the question was irrelevant as diversity was somehow obviously a natural feature of human language, one not requiring much explanation — (...)

Early Modern Terminology for Dialect.Raf Van Rooy & Alexander Maxwell - 2023 - Contributions to the History of Concepts 18 (1):95-118.
When the language-dialect dichotomy first emerged in the early modern period, several scholars devised terminological alternatives, particularly for the subordinate lower half of the dichotomy. This article examines a series of terminological alternatives in their social and linguistic contexts, considering terms from the Romance, Germanic, and Slavic linguistic zones. Our case studies suggest that there were two main reasons for coining neologisms, or for devising new meanings for existing words. Some scholars sought terms with stronger pejorative connotations, others acted (...)

Does CEO–Auditor Dialect Connectedness Trigger Audit Opinion Shopping? Evidence from China.Xingqiang Du, Liang Xiao & Yingjie Du - 2023 - Journal of Business Ethics 184 (2):391-426.
Using the original information from the identification cards of CEOs and signing auditors to hand-collect the data on CEO–auditor dialect connectedness (_CADC_), we examine the effect of _CADC_ on audit opinion shopping (_AOS_), and further investigate the moderating effect of auditor reputation. Using a sample of Chinese listed firms during the period of 2007–2019, our findings reveal that the likelihood of _AOS_ is significantly higher for firms with _CADC_ than for their counterparts. This finding suggests that _CADC_ impairs auditor (...)

Development of the Pittsburgh Dialect in the Postmodern Period from the Perspective of the Influence of Sociolinguistic Factors.Kateryna Vukolova, Vira Zirka, Nataliia Styrnik, Tetiana Smoliana & Lyudmyla Kulakevych - 2022 - Postmodern Openings 13 (1):420-435.
The relevance of the work is determined, first of all, by a new perspective on the speech variability analysis depending on the influence of selected extralingual factors: gender, ethnicity, social status and age, which, of course, corresponds to the current state of the linguistic development and growing interest in disclosure of the influence of social factors on the functioning of language in different territories, as well as the application of an ecolinguistic approach to the analysis of Pittsburgh dialect sociolinguistic (...)

To Purify the Dialect of the Tribe: children's use of non-standard dialect grammar in writing.John Williamson & Frank Hardman - 1997 - Educational Studies 23 (2):157-168.
Teachers of children of all ages are enjoined by the National Curriculum for English to develop their pupils’ ability to write in standard English. This study explores the implications of these injunctions by examining the use of non-standard dialect grammar in the writing of 362 texts written by pupils of 11 an 15 years of age. It is established that most of the forms used are found in all four of the geographical regions sampled. The grammatical features of these (...)

The Role of Acoustic Distance and Sociolinguistic Knowledge in Dialect Identification.Hanna Ruch - 2018 - Frontiers in Psychology 9:350328.
Listeners are able to quite accurately distinguish between different dialects of their native language, but little is known about the process of dialect identification and the phonetic cues listeners use to identify someone's regional origin. This study examines how different segments, acoustic between-dialect distance, and the listeners' knowledge about a dialect contribute to this process. Native speakers of Grison and Zurich German were asked to categorize isolated words spoken by eight speakers of Grison and eight speakers of (...)
