„Ruch Filozoficzny” and the freedom of scientific research in Poland (in 1947-1957 years). Presented article refers to the situation in the Polish philosophy, which took place between 40-50 of the twentieth century. Author’s reflections are carried on the example of attempts to reactivate in the realities of war, the polish philosophical journal “Ruch Filozoficzny” founded in 1911 by Kazimierz Twardowski. Political conditions have made the magazine was renewed twice, at each time was the greatest merit of Tadeusz Czeżowski. He was (...) assisted by the other representatives of the Lvov-Warsaw School, who worked in various academic centers in Poland. The reconstruction of the history of the magazine in the postwar years, will be based on previously unpublished archival material. In its conclusions, the author tries to point out of great importance of independent from the political authorities publishers on development of Polish philosophy. (shrink)

This issue of "Ruch Filozoficzny" is dedicated to Izydora Dąmbska on the 120th anniversary of her birth. In this way, we would like to recall her figure and scientific achievements. It is one of the most important figures in Polish philosophy, originating from Kazimierz Twardowski's Lviv School. Dąmbska was certainly an indomitable philosopher. In the difficult times of Stalinist terror, she stood up for her Lviv Master and the philosophy she had learned there and had to defend.

In March 1930, Alfred Tarski visited Vienna and delivered few lectures which presented the achievements of the logical branch of the Lvov-Warsaw School. Rudolf Carnap was one of the most careful listeners of these lectures. The same year, in November, Carnap, invited by the Warsaw Philosophical Society, visited Warsaw where he gave three lectures. This was an opportunity for him to meet such members the Lvov-Warsaw School as Jan Łukasiewicz, Stanisław Leśniewski, Tadeusz Kotarbiński, and others. Many years later, Carnap reminisced (...) that he left Warsaw “grateful for many stimulating suggestions and the fruitful exchange of ideas”.In the paper, I reconstruct the details of Carnap’s visit in Warsaw based on Carnap’s diaries, reports published in the Polish Journal Ruch Filozoficzny [Philosophical Movement] and some correspondence. I also discuss some problems presented by Carnap in Warsaw lectures and compare his views to the positons of members of the Lvov-Warsaw School. These problems are: the foundations of psychology, the status of metaphysical sentences, and the character of reasoning. (shrink)

This article is a translation of the paper in Polish (Alfred Tarski - człowiek, który zdefiniował prawdę) published in Ruch Filozoficzny 4 (4) (2007). It is a personal Alfred Tarski memories based on my stay in Berkeley and visit the Alfred Tarski house for the invitation of Janusz Tarski.

Późny okres filozofii Berkeleya, związany z publikacją Siris, niekiedy interpretuje się jako zerwanie z tezami okresu wczesnego – tzn. okresu twórczości obejmującego czas do opublikowania Trzech dialogów między Hylasem a Filonousem. W literaturze przedmiotu pojawiają się jednak wzmianki na temat komplementarności pism Berkeleya, pochodzących z różnych lat. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę spojrzenia na system filozoficzny Berkeleya z obu okresów twórczości pod kątem jego podstawowych założeń metafizycznych. Użyty do tego zadania neoplatoński klucz interpretacyjny pozwala w odmienny sposób spojrzeć na niektóre jego (...) elementy, np. zwrócić uwagę na gradualizm metafizyczny jako rdzeń systemu irlandzkiego filozofa. W tej optyce Berkeley staje się przede wszystkim zaangażowanym religijnie metafizykiem, dla którego namysł epistemologiczny stanowi jedynie dopełnienie filozoficznego projektu. Odwołania Berkeleya w Siris do tradycji neoplatońskiej, w myśl przeprowadzanej w artykule interpretacji, nie pełnią jedynie funkcji perswazyjnej (co postulują niektórzy komentatorzy), a wyrażają autentyczny sens filozofii Dobrego Biskupa. Przeciwstawienie wczesnego systemu Berkeleya (empiryzmu) oraz późnego (neoplatonizmu) okazuje się w tej interpretacji bezzasadne, ponieważ twierdzenia teoriopoznawcze uzasadnione są pewną wizją rzeczywistości, związaną z chrześcijańskim neoplatonizmem. Subiektywistyczne ujęcie czasu i przestrzeni nie jawi się wówczas jedynie jako postulat epistemologiczny, wypracowany na gruncie dyskusji z XVII-wieczną filozofią, a twierdzenie metafizyczne, centralne dla systemu myśliciela z Kilkenny. Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest analiza rozprawki An Essay Concerning the Use of Reason in Propositions, The Evidence whereof depends upon Human Testimony (Londyn 1707, II wyd. 1709) brytyjskiego filozofa Anthony’ego Collinsa (1676-1729). Analiza ta prowadzi do odkrycia trudności bronionego w niej stanowiska, polegających na niejasności użytej terminologii, niejednoznaczności tezy głównej, zgodnie z którą warunkiem koniecznym uznania twierdzenia jest jego zgodność z rozumem, oraz niewystarczalności jej podanego w Eseju uzasadnienia. Zarysowano również kontekst filozoficzny i historyczny tego rzadko analizowanego dzieła.

Jean-Yves Lacoste jest mało znanym w Polsce współczesnym francuskim myślicielem. Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia krótko jego naukową biografię i dorobek oraz prezentuje jego główny filozoficzny projekt fenomenologii człowieczeństwa człowieka (l’humanité de l’homme), którą on sam nazywa fenomenologią liturgii. W tekście przeanalizowane zostaną źródła myśli Lacoste’a. Artykuł podejmie kilka ważnych pytań, które wypływają z rozważań nad myślą Lacoste’a. Dlaczego zamiast stawiać pytanie o bycie, należy raczej zapytać o człowieka (questio de homine)? Dlaczego fenomenologia liturgii jest zarazem fenomenologią człowieczeństwa człowieka (l’humanité de l’homme)? (...) Dlaczego leży ona w centrum dysputy o człowieku (disputatio de homine)? Jakie jest jej odniesienie do transcendentalnej analityki jestestwa zaproponowanej przez Heideggera? Wreszcie przeanalizowana zostanie krótko dyskusja, która narasta wokół Lacoste’a wraz ze wzrostem zainteresowania jego myślą. (shrink)

The VIA Classification on character strengths and virtues suggests 24 character strengths clustered into six core virtues. Three recent studies employed different methods for testing the assignment of character strengths to virtues, and generally supported the VIA classification. However, the co-occurrence of character strengths and virtues within individuals has not been examined yet. Another untested assumption is that an individual’s composition of character strengths is related to being considered of “good character.” Thus, the present study addresses three research questions: How (...) do character strengths and measured virtues co-occur within individuals? How does the number of character strengths an individual possesses within a virtue cluster relate to their level of the respective virtue? How does the composition of an individual’s character strengths relate to being considered of “good character”? We combined data from different studies to obtain a sample of N = 1,241 participants aged 18 to 92 years. All participants completed assessments of character strengths and virtues. Regarding, we found a high convergence of the correlations between strengths and virtues and the VIA Classification: 22 out of 24 character strengths correlated with the assigned virtue. Also, 15 character strengths showed the numerically highest correlation with their assigned virtue. Regarding, overall, we found a linear trend between the number of strengths within one cluster and the virtue level. Regarding, we found higher levels of reported “good character” in those who possessed either at least one character strength in each virtue cluster or all character strengths in at least one virtue compared to those who did not. The present results contribute to the discussion regarding the structure of character: individuals’ character strengths relate to differences in virtues, across different measures and data sources. Relationships were mostly as expected, and deviations were consistent with results obtained using other approaches. (shrink)

W sezonie wakacyjnym 2023 roku Zakopane odnotowało znaczący wzrost udziału turystów z krajów arabskich w sektorze HoReCa. Wzmożony ruch turystyczny halal wywołał konsternację branży turystycznej, zmuszając do refleksji nad kierunkiem dalszego rozwoju tego sektora. Artykuł ma na celu ukazanie, w jaki sposób pracownicy HoReCa w centrum Zakopanego (na Krupówkach) postrzegają kontakty i współpracę z muzułmańskimi turystami. Celem jest także odpowiedź na pytania o zmiany, jakim pod wpływem turystyki halal podlega oferta turystyczna tego miasta. Tekst został oparty na materiale pozyskanym w (...) wyniku badań terenowych przeprowadzonych w Zakopanem oraz analizie prasy. Sektor usługowy na Podhalu jest elastyczny i szybko reaguje na zmiany na rynku turystycznym, dostosowując ofertę do zaistniałych potrzeb. Mimo to zderzenie z odmienną kulturą skutkuje szeregiem nieporozumień i konfliktów, które w przyszłości można wyeliminować, prowadząc edukację w tym zakresie. Małopolska i Podhale stanowią aktualnie niewykorzystany potencjał w turystyce halal, który ma szansę na dynamiczny rozwój. (shrink)

Discusses reasoning and clear thinking, including such aspects as the nature of facts, language and reasoning, false analogies, and prejudice.

This paper reads Simone de Beauvoir's travel journal America Day by Day for its philosophical content. I argue that this work provides a unique approach to feminist, embodied philosophy, one that has been overlooked by the categorization of her writing into philosophical works and feminist ones. Such an approach, I contend, is enacted here through her use of Heidegger's concept of the everyday to inform her own treatment of understanding and experience.
