This commentary examines Diego Garrocho’s paper, “Mythological Sources of Memory and Oblivion.” I argue that Garrocho’s thesis hinges on the assumption that two historical continuities exist between myth and philosophy. First, it supposes a continuity of understanding: between the mythical conception of memory and oblivion, and the philosophical reformulation of the same, there lies no essential difference; both the mythical and philosophical traditions share a univocal, or at least analogical, concept of memory and oblivion. Second, it supposes a continuity of (...) appreciation: memory and oblivion are valued at various stages in the history of thought in univocal or analogical ways. I go on to see whether these continuities have taken place within the work of Plato, who, I argue, is an axial figure between myth and philosophy. (shrink)

This essay constructs a picture of the meaning of life based on De Anima 2. 2-4. It shows that there are organisms that preserve their form through the exercise of identifiable functions. For an individual to be a short, living thing is for it to be one of these naturally species-preserving organisms. For an individual living thing to be actually living is for it to be able to perform one of the psychic or living functions appropriate to its species.

The starting point of this article is the ontological question: What makes it true that2+2=4?, that is, what are the truth makers of mathematical propositions? Of course,the satisfactory theory in the philosophy of mathematics has to answer semantical question: What are mathematical propositions about? A left-variable word over an alphabet A is a word over $A \cup \{\star \}$ whose first letter is the distinguished symbol $\star $ standing for a placeholder. The ordered variable word theorem ( $\mathsf {OVW}$ ), also known as Carlson–Simpson’s theorem, is a tree partition theorem, stating that for every finite alphabet A and every finite coloring of the words over A, there exists a word $c_0$ and an infinite sequence of left-variable words $w_1, w_2, \dots $ such that (...) $\{ c_0 \cdot w_1[a_1] \cdot \dots \cdot w_k[a_k] : k \in \mathbb {N}, a_1, \dots, a_k \in A \}$ is monochromatic. In this article, we prove that $\mathsf {OVW}$ is $\Pi ^0_4$ -conservative over $\mathsf {RCA}_0 + \mathsf {B}\Sigma ^0_2$. This implies in particular that $\mathsf {OVW}$ does not imply $\mathsf {ACA}_0$ over $\mathsf {RCA}_0$. 4-6 yaş grubu çocukların gelişimsel özellikleri, onların yaparak/yaşayarak öğrenmelerini gerekli kıldığından bu dönemde somut yaşantılar oldukça önemlidir. Okul öncesinde çocuklar için; sevecekleri, kendilerini iyi ve güvende hissedecekleri eğitim ortamları hazırlanmalıdır. Bu sebeple 4-6 yaş grubu Kur’an kursu binalarının çocukların gelişim özelliklerine, ilgi ve ihtiyaçlarına uygun olarak tasarlanmış ve düzenlenmiş olması gerekmektedir. Araştırmanın amacı, 4-6 yaş grubu Kur’an kurslarının sahip olduğu fiziki imkânların eğitime elverişlilik durumunun belirlenmesidir. Çalışmada nicel veri toplama araçlarından anket tekniği kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın evrenini, Gaziantep il merkezi ve ilçelerinde (...) bulunan 4-6 yaş grubu Kur’an kurslarında görev yapmakta olan 175 öğretici oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın örneklemi ise evren içerisinden basit seçkisiz örnekleme yöntemi ile seçilen 143 öğreticiden oluşmaktadır. Elde edilen veriler bağımlı ve bağımsız değişkenler dikkate alınarak, bilgisayar ortamında SPSS 22.0 paket programı kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda kursların önemli bir kısmının yeterli büyüklükte bir oyun bahçesine sahip olmadığı, var olan oyun alanları düzenlenirken çocukların gelişim dönemi özelliklerinin, ilgi ve ihtiyaçlarının yeterince dikkate alınmadığı, kurs binalarının temizliği noktasında birtakım eksikliklerin bulunduğu tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca kursların birçoğunda öğreticilerin dinlenmesi ve veliler ile görüşme yapması için uygun mekânlar bulunmadığı, kurs binalarının iç ve dış cephe boya renklerinin okul öncesi dönem çocukları için uygun olmadığı, ses yalıtımı ve kısmen güvenlik sorunu bulunduğu belirlenmiştir.
