As is the case around the globe, South African fertility clinics face an ever‐expanding problem: what to do with the growing number of surplus cryopreserved embryos. Fertility clinics remain hesitant to destroy these abandoned embryos, partly because of concerns about the legal ramifications. This article clarifies the legal position in South Africa and offers practical recommendations to assist fertility clinics in managing abandoned embryos. In sum, fertility clinics cannot deem embryos as abandoned and discard them if fertility patients fail to (...) respond to a notice that the embryo storage agreement is about to expire. However, if there is non‐payment for embryo storage by fertility patients and the fertility clinic has informed the fertility patients of other options available to them with respect to their embryos, and there is still no response, the fertility clinic is legally entitled – and legally obliged – to discard the embryos. The article examines the significance of the distinction between phenomena and things in themselves for the foundation of Kantian practical reason. It holds that this distinction acquires its full meaning and the entire gamut of its validity only in the sphere of practical reason. In this way, it attempts to show that the Kantian epistemological distinctions and the fundamental steps in the construction of the Critique of Pure Reason are at the same time strategies to support practical reason, thus driven (...) by an emphatically “practical interest”. Morin envisions the adaptive landscape of graphic codes as an unfertile valley where writing rises as an isolated peak that humans managed to reach only on four occasions throughout all of history. By exploring the different paths to cultural convergence, we suggest an alternative landscape occupied by a mountain range of visual art systems. We conclude that graphic communication through visual art worked well enough to render writing contingent but not necessary in most cases.

À partir de la traduction de l’inscription de la stèle indicatrice d’Aliki, publiée en 1964, on propose plusieurs hypothèses d’itinéraires à travers l’île entre Aliki et Thasos, par l’Est comme par l’Ouest. On s’appuie, pour l’essentiel, sur des éléments relevant de l’analyse des paysages. Ceci permet de renforcer, en la précisant, l’hypothèse d’une localisation de Démétrion dans la région des Kalyvias de Kastro (près de Limenaria). L’organisation spatiale de l’île qui en découle est constituée d’un centre (la cité) (...) et de zones-relais d’habitats nucléés (desserrés autour d’un pôle) qui structurent une population probablement nombreuse dès la fondation de la cité. Les itinéraires décrits, comme la densité du peuplement, impliquent un espace sécurisé et exploité de manière plus ou moins intensive dans la quasi-totalité du territoire et durant toute l’Antiquité. La richesse des ressources thasiennes permet de mieux comprendre la densité précoce de la population qui, en retour, a permis de pérenniser sa richesse durant toute l’Antiquité. (shrink)

Une série d’inscriptions thasiennes, datées du iie et du iiie s. apr. J.‑C., fait connaître une pratique originale : à intervalle régulier, peut‑être une fois par an, les principaux magistrats de la cité, sous la conduite d’un ou de plusieurs archontes, effectuaient solennellement le tour de l’île, par voie de mer. Au sud‑est de l’île, le sanctuaire d’Aliki, où ont été retrouvées la plupart des dédicaces, paraît avoir constitué le but de cette tournée. Des sacrifices et des banquets y (...) étaient organisés. Le périple des magistrats offrait à la cité l’occasion de réaffirmer son emprise sur le territoire insulaire, en y effectuant notamment des opérations de justice et de police. (shrink)
