    Truthmaking, Truthbearers, and Divine Simplicity.Allen Gehring - 2014 - Philosophia Christi 16 (2):297-317.
Recent work using the idea of truthmaking to articulate the doctrine of divine simplicity has not paid enough attention to truthbearers. I address this issue by challenging the assumption that God’s simplicity needs to be conceived as an all-or-nothing matter. For it is possible to distinguish between a weak and a strong version of divine simplicity, and there are reasons regarding truthbearers that provide reason to uphold, at most, the weak version. The weak version of divine simplicity articulated here has (...)

The Inverted Eye. Panopticon and Panopticism, Revisited.Petra Gehring - 2017 - Foucault Studies 23:46-62.
Panopticism is commonly taken to rely on something like a panoptic gaze – a reading of Foucault which still prevails in the discussion of today’s surveillance technologies in the wake of Surveiller et punir. In my re-reading of the relevant chapters of Foucault’s book I argue that the gaze does not occupy a central role in the techniques of discipline and power that Foucault describes. Quite to the contrary, Foucault analyses virtualization and automatization procedures that – after cutting off of (...)

    The institutionalization of Open Source.Robert A. Gehring - 2006 - Poiesis and Praxis 4 (1):54-73.
Using concepts of neoinstitutional economics, such as transaction cost economics, institutional economics, property rights theory, and information economics, the development of the Open Source movement is investigated. Following the evolution of institutions in Open Source, it is discussed what the comparative institutional advantages of this model are. The conclusion is that it is the institutional framework of Open Source, not merely the low cost of Open Source software that makes it an attractive alternative mode of organizing the production and distribution (...)

The empiricism of Michel Serres a theory of the senses between philosophy of science, phenomenology and ethics.Petra Gehring - 2021 - Filozofija I Društvo 32 (2):229-245.
The paper presents the philosophy of the French philosopher Michel Serres, with an accent on his working method and unusual methodology. Starting from the thesis that the empiricist trait of Serres? philosophy remains underexposed if one simply receives his work as that of a structuralist epistemologist, Serres? monograph The Five Senses is then discussed in more detail. Here we see both a radical empiricism all his own and a closeness to phenomenology. Nevertheless, perception and language are not opposed to each (...)

    Theoriebildung und ihre Prosa.Petra Gehring - 2024 - Deutsche Zeitschrift für Philosophie 72 (2):247-257.
Regarding the question of “theory”, the paper takes the perspective of creation, i. e. of producing texts that exhibit theoretical qualities and that in this sense both do justice to a – certainly complex – “function” of philosophical theory and also “work” as theory (namely in a sustainable way, and perhaps also beyond the current scientific orthodoxies) and can thus be received in the long line of the philosophically relevant reading canon. On the one hand, it is proposed to take (...)

Charlie Chaplin y Buster Keaton.

    Tedium vitae: Or, my life as a 'net serf'.Verna V. Gehring - 1997 - Ratio 10 (2):124–140.
Boredom, like pain, is a subjective experience, but while the sources of pain can be either internal or external to the subject, the causes of boredom are always external. Understanding boredom as a reaction to external influences requires inquiries into the subjective awareness of boredom and into the social and cultural conditions giving rise to boredom. After briefly investigating these areas, I suggest that in the past boredom was seen as a necessary ingredient to creative inspiration and self‐understanding, and as (...)

Community Matters: Challenges to Civic Engagement in the 21st Century.Verna V. Gehring (ed.) - 2005 - Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.
In Community Matters: Challenges to Civic Engagement in the 21st Century, six distinguished scholars address three perennial challenges of civic life: the making of a citizen, how citizens are to agree, and how to define the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. These essays will encourage students, academics, and interested citizens outside the academy to go farther and dig deeper into these vital issues.

    How expendable are »Kollektivsingulare« actually?Petra Gehring - 2023 - Deutsche Vierteljahrsschrift für Literaturwissenschaft Und Geistesgeschichte 97 (1):65-71.
In the historical, literary, and philosophical history of concepts, large-scale concepts or, more precisely, »Kollektivsingulare« [collective singular concepts] – as Koselleck described them with considerable effect on the practice of social history – are regarded as metaphysical, ideological, or at least as simplifications. The essay does not deny that this is justified, but with a certain melancholy it pleads for a careful archiving and also for the ongoing use of the terms in question including their multifaceted historical semantology. This even (...)

Philosophical Dimensions of Public Policy.Verna V. Gehring & William Arthur Galston - 2002 - Transaction.
At the mid-point of the twentieth century, many philosophers in the English-speaking world regarded political and moral philosophy as all but moribund. Thinkers influenced by logical positivism believe that ethical statements are merely disguised expressions of individual emotion lacking propositional force, or that the conditions for the validation of ethical statements could not be specified, or that their content, however humanly meaningful, is inexpressible. Philosophical Dimensions of Public Policy presents thirty-four articles written by research scholars numerous fields-philosophy, political theory, medicine, (...)

Transparenz, Erklärbarkeit, Interpretierbarkeit, Vertrauen: digitalethische Doppelgänger des Verantwortungsbegriffs.Petra Gehring - 2023 - Deutsche Zeitschrift für Philosophie 71 (5):629-645.
The paper examines four key concepts of digital and AI ethics, which make normative (“ought”) claims: “transparency,” “explainability,”“interpretability,” and “trust.” The idea is that with the help of these concepts, digital transformation should be “responsibly” shaped, and there is even an aspiration to establish an independent digital ethics. The analysis in this paper questions approaches of this type. It elaborates differences between the tradition of philosophical appeals to responsibility and the digital-ethical buzzwords. The concept of responsibility may be a vague (...)

Between academic standards and wild innovation: assessing big data and artificial intelligence projects in research ethics committees.Andreas Brenneis, Petra Gehring & Annegret Lamadé - 2024 - Ethik in der Medizin 36 (4):473-491.
Definition of the problem In medicine, as well as in other disciplines, computer science expertise is becoming increasingly important. This requires a culture of interdisciplinary assessment, for which medical ethics committees are not well prepared. The use of big data and artificial intelligence (AI) methods (whether developed in-house or in the form of “tools”) pose further challenges for research ethics reviews. Arguments This paper describes the problems and suggests solving them through procedural changes. Conclusion An assessment that is interdisciplinary from (...)

    Can the Legal Order 'Respond'?Petra Gehring - 2006 - Ethical Perspectives 13 (3):469-496.
After a brief explanation of my approach, this paper questions the foundations of a phenomenological theory of law, deploying the argument in three steps. In a first step I reconstruct the connection between Anspruchand Anrecht as developed in Waldenfels’ paradigm of responsiveness. Can law be characterised as an order that is able to ‘respond’ in this specific sense? The second step confronts the radical perspective of a phenomenology of the alien with the question of order. Can a theory of order characterise law (...)

What might it influence in our conception of human nature? What challenges does genetic science pose for specific issues of private conduct or public policy?
