    Note on Florensky’s Solution to Carroll’s ‘Barbershop’ Paradox: Reverse Implication for Russell?Michael Rhodes - 2012 - Philosophia 40 (3):607-616.
Abstract Pavel Florensky solves Lewis Carroll’s ‘Barbershop’ paradox to support his reasoning in a previous chapter. Our discussion includes a) the problem (which we also refer to as the p paradox), b) Carroll’s solution, c) Bertrand Russell’s solution, d) Florensky’s solution and then e) a material example proffered by Florensky. Both Russell and Florensky disagree with Carroll’s solution, yet, (ostensibly) unbeknownst to themselves they offer the same solution, which is ‘p implies not-q’. Given Florensky’s material (...)

  9. Hugh MacColl and Lewis Carroll: Crosscurrents in geometry and logic.Francine F. Abeles & Amirouche Moktefi - 2011 - Philosophia Scientiae 15:55-76.

    (3 other versions)Paradoxes From a to Z.Michael Clark - 2002 - New York: Routledge.
_Paradoxes from A to Z, Third edition_ is the essential guide to paradoxes, and takes the reader on a lively tour of puzzles that have taxed thinkers from Zeno to Galileo, and Lewis Carroll to Bertrand Russell. Michael Clark uncovers an array of conundrums, such as Achilles and the Tortoise, Theseus’ Ship, and the Prisoner’s Dilemma, taking in subjects as diverse as knowledge, science, art and politics. Clark discusses each paradox in non-technical terms, considering its significance and looking (...)

    Embracing the Meta-Copernican Turn: Non-decomposition and Mechanistic Explanations.Russell Meyer - 2018 - Australasian Philosophical Review 2 (2):214-218.
In line with proponents of 4E cognition, Gallagher [2019] is concerned that many cognitive phenomena are not amenable to decomposition strategies since their very nature is to be constituted extensively. By contrast the received view on causal explanation—the mechanistic account [Craver 2007]—emphasises the necessity for decomposition in explaining natural phenomena and insists on a sharp distinction between causal versus constitutive relations. I propose that removing the requirement that constitutive relations cannot also be causes helps to ease this tension between explanation (...)

  17. Cruelty and Humour.Valery Vino & Noel Carroll - 2024 - Debates in Aesthetics 19 (1):149-161.
Philosophical discussions about humour go back to ancient aesthetics, to laughing Democritus and the aporia of Socratic self-irony, to Diogenes the Dog performing tricks on the streets of Athens, and to the lost second book of Aristotle’s Poetics. Dramatized in texts and the arts, the comic emerges not only in popular literature and public events, like Dionysia and Saturnalia, but also in the lives of eminent philosophers in antiquity, the Renaissance, and today. Recently, humour has seen a resurgence in aesthetics, (...)

    Htp-complete rings of rational numbers.Russell Miller - 2022 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 87 (1):252-272.
For a ring R, Hilbert’s Tenth Problem $HTP$ is the set of polynomial equations over R, in several variables, with solutions in R. We view $HTP$ as an enumeration operator, mapping each set W of prime numbers to $HTP$, which is naturally viewed as a set of polynomials in $\mathbb {Z}[X_1,X_2,\ldots ]$. It is known that for almost all W, the jump $W'$ does not $1$ -reduce to $HTP$. In contrast, we show that every Turing degree contains a set W (...)

Phenomenological Preconditions of the Concept of Film-as-Philosophy.Shawn Loht - 2015 - Journal of Aesthetics and Phenomenology 2 (2):171-185.
This article surveys influential views on the topic of film-as-philosophy, principally the positions of Bruce Russell, Thomas Wartenburg, Noël Carroll, and Stephen Mulhall. Historically, this conversation has been restricted to a somewhat conservative view initiated by Russell and defended by others, according to which the film medium is fundamentally incapable of generating positive philosophical achievement in purely cinematic fashion. One of my interests is to show how the dialogue initiated by Russell suffers from relying on overly (...)

    Representing ignorance.Russell Hardin - 2004 - Social Philosophy and Policy 21 (1):76-99.
If we wish to assess the morality of elected officials, we must understand their function as our representatives and then infer how they can fulfill this function. I propose to treat the class of elected officials as a profession, so that their morality is a role morality and it is functionally determined. If we conceive the role morality of legislators to be analogous to the ethics of other professions, then this morality must be functionally defined by the purpose that legislators (...)

The Prospects of Industrial Civilization.Bertrand Russell - 1959 - Routledge.
First published in 1923, _The Prospects of Industrial Civilization_ is considered the most ambitious of Bertrand Russell's works on modern society. It offers a rare glimpse into often-ignored subtleties of his political thought and in it he argues that industrialism is a threat to human freedom, since it is fundamentally linked with nationalism. His proposal for one government for the whole world as the ultimate solution, along with his argument that the global village and prevailing political democracy should be (...)

Presenting key texts in and about pragmatism, this collection of essays explores pragmatism's origins, applications, and weaknesses, as well as its remarkable versatility as an approach not only to issues of truth and knowledge, but to ethics and social philosophy, literature, law, aesthetics, religion, and education. Exploring a wide range of work on topics spanning from the birth of pragmatism in nineteenth century America, to its contemporary revival as an international and multi-disciplinary phenomenon, the collection: * is international in scope, (...)

    Marcuse's Hegelian Marxism, Marx's Grundrisse, Hegel's Dialectic.Russell Rockwell - 2013 - Radical Philosophy Review 16 (1):289-306.
Herbert Marcuse noted early on in his writings on social theory the importance of both Hegel’s and Marx’s development of the dialectic of necessity and freedom to conceptualize the possibility of a postcapitalist society of freedom emerging from the actually existing capitalist societies. Marcuse was not only the first Marxist to analyze all of Hegel’s philosophic works, he also recognized the significance of and provided analyses of lasting importance of previously unpublished works of Marx, principally the Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts (...)

    Good manners: signaling social preferences.Russell Golman - 2016 - Theory and Decision 81 (1):73-88.
Certain messages, even when not directly payoff relevant, can be a credible form of communication in light of natural social preferences. Social image concerns and other-regarding preferences interact to create incentives to communicate about how one feels about other people. Recognizing the prevalence of the incentive to communicate about one’s social preferences suggests that many social and economic phenomena—from norms of etiquette to cooperation to gift exchange—should be seen, in part, as forms of signaling. These behaviors may be surprisingly robust (...)
