  10. Theory of mind in nonhuman primates.Cecilia M. Heyes - 1998 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 21 (1):101-114.
Since the BBS article in which Premack and Woodruff (1978) asked “Does the chimpanzee have a theory of mind?,” it has been repeatedly claimed that there is observational and experimental evidence that apes have mental state concepts, such as “want” and “know.” Unlike research on the development of theory of mind in childhood, however, no substantial progress has been made through this work with nonhuman primates. A survey of empirical studies of imitation, self-recognition, social relationships, deception, role-taking, and perspective-taking suggests (...)

  12. (1 other version)Contrasting approaches to the legitimation of intentional language within comparative psychology.Cecilia M. Heyes - 1987 - Behaviorism 15 (1):41-50.
Dennett, a philosopher, and Griffin, an ethologist, have recently presented influential arguments promoting the extended use of intentional language by students of animal behavior. This essay seeks to elucidate and to contrast the claims made by each of these authors, and to evaluate their proposals primarily from the perspective of a practicing comparative psychologist or ethologist. While Griffin regards intentional terms as explanatory, Dennett assigns them a descriptive function; the issue of animal consciousness is central to Griffin's program and only (...)

    Novel Minds: Philosophers and Romance Readers, 1680-1740.Rebecca Tierney-Hynes - 2012 - Palgrave-Macmillan.
Through discussions of Locke, Behn, Shaftesbury, Hume, and Richardson, this book traces the idea of romance as, in the process of engendering resistance, it comes nonetheless to define the empiricist mind as the reading mind.

Perceived Drivers of Engagement and Disengagement in Workplace Wellbeing Programmes; Qualitative Evidence from Employees in the Republic of Ireland.Jennifer Hynes & Brian Crooke - 2024 - Humanistic Management Journal 9 (3):1-32.
This study employs a qualitative approach to investigate the factors influencing engagement in Irish employee wellbeing programmes. Two stages of data collection were conducted, involving 52 employees completing open-ended questionnaires in Stage 1 and 23 participants interviewed in Stage 2. Three themes emerged from the thematic analysis of the data: (1) communicating wellbeing initiatives; (2) creating and maintaining interest in wellbeing; and (3) challenges to employee wellbeing. The three themes and their subthemes provide qualitative evidence from employees on the barriers (...)

Understanding the challenges of palliative care in everyday clinical practice: an example from a COPD action research project.Geralyn Hynes, Fiona Kavanagh, Christine Hogan, Kitty Ryan, Linda Rogers, Jenny Brosnan & David Coghlan - 2015 - Nursing Inquiry 22 (3):249-260.
Palliative care seeks to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from the impact of life‐limiting illnesses. Palliative care encompasses but is more than end‐of‐life care, which is defined as care during the final hours/days/weeks of life. Although palliative care policies increasingly require all healthcare professionals to have at least basic or non‐specialist skills in palliative care, international evidence suggests there are difficulties in realising such policies. This study reports on an action research project aimed at developing respiratory nursing (...)

    Detection of unpaired DNA at meiosis results in RNA‐mediated silencing.Michael J. Hynes & Richard B. Todd - 2003 - Bioessays 25 (2):99-103.
During meiosis, homologous chromosomes must pair in order to permit recombination and correct chromosome segregation to occur. Two recent papers1,2 show that meiotic pairing is also important for correct gene expression during meiosis. They describe data for the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa that show that a lack of pairing generated by ectopic integration of genes can result in silencing of genes expressed during meiosis. This can result in aberrant meioses whose defects are specific to the function of the unpaired gene. (...)

La Polyphonie des Temps chez Vintila Horia.Cecilia Popescu Latiş - 2008 - Proceedings of the Xxii World Congress of Philosophy 26:93-101.

Ambulance nurses’ experiences of patient relationships in urgent and emergency situations: A qualitative exploration.Cecilia Svensson, Anders Bremer & Mats Holmberg - 2019 - Clinical Ethics 14 (2):70-79.
Background The ambulance service provides emergency care to meet the patient’s medical and nursing needs. Based on professional nursing values, this should be done within a caring relationship with a holistic approach as the opposite would risk suffering related to disengagement from the patient’s emotional and existential needs. However, knowledge is sparse on how ambulance personnel can meet caring needs and avoid suffering, particularly in conjunction with urgent and emergency situations. Aim The aim of the study was to explore ambulance (...)

Cognition blindness and cognitive gadgets.Cecilia Heyes - 2019 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 42.
Responding to commentaries from psychologists, neuroscientists, philosophers, and anthropologists, I clarify a central purpose of Cognitive Gadgets – to overcome “cognition blindness” in research on human evolution. I defend this purpose against Brunerian, extended mind, and niche construction critiques of computationalism – that is, views prioritising meaning over information, or asserting that behaviour and objects can be intrinsic parts of a thinking process. I argue that empirical evidence from cognitive science is needed to locate distinctively human cognitive mechanisms on the (...)

    The Teaching Instinct.Cecilia I. Calero, A. P. Goldin & M. Sigman - 2018 - Review of Philosophy and Psychology 9 (4):819-830.
Teaching allows human culture to exist and to develop. Despite its significance, it has not been studied in depth by the cognitive neurosciences. Here we propose two hypotheses to boost the claim that teaching is a human instinct, and to expand our understanding of how teaching occurs as a dynamic bi-directional relation within the teacher-learner dyad. First, we explore how children naturally use ostensive communication when teaching; allowing them to be set in the emitter side of natural pedagogy. Then, we (...)

The first reception of James Steuart in Italy: Giovanni Tamassia and his liberal economic reading of the Principles of Political Economy.Cecilia Carnino - 2018 - History of European Ideas 44 (2):182-193.
ABSTRACTThis article has two aims. The first is to explore the early reception of James Steuart in Italy, focusing on Giovanni Tamassia’s writings. In his Dello spirito di riforma, written between 1799 and 1800, Tamassia was the first Italian author to assume Steuart as a point of reference in economic analysis. Largely re-proposing Steuart’s considerations on the issues of redistribution of land, of luxury, and of comparison between ancient and modern times, he contributed decisively to the first circulation in Italy (...)

Folk psychology won't go away: Response to Allen and Bekoff.Cecilia Heyes & Anthony Dickinson - 1995 - Mind and Language 10 (4):329-332.
Responding to Allen and Bekoff's (this issue) critique of Heyes and Dickinson's (1990) analysis of the intentionality of animal action, we reiterate that our approach does not assume that a hypothesis can be definitively falsified by the results of a single experiment, and argue that the evolutionary analysis favoured by Allen and Bekoff insulates intentional accounts of animal behaviour from rejection in the usual‘holistic’process of scientific evaluation. Specifically, we present data showing that the maintenance of behaviour on an omission schedule (...)

Credit Markets, Exemptions, and Households with Nothing to Exempt.Richard M. Hynes - 2006 - Theoretical Inquiries in Law 7 (2):493-522.
American bankruptcy law has offered a "fresh start" in every state for over one hundred years. As a result, econometric studies of consumer bankruptcy often focus on one of the few aspects of the law that has varied significantly across time and across states: exemptions. Professors Gropp, Scholz and White published the first article to test the effect of exemptions on credit markets. Consistent with theory, they found that residents of states with larger exemptions pay higher interest rates than those (...)

Background: In previous research on ethics case reflection (ECR) sessions about specific cases, healthcare professionals in childhood cancer care were clarifying their perspectives on the ethical issue to resolve their main concern of consolidating care. When perspectives were clarified, consequences in the team included ‘increased understanding’, ‘group strengthening’ and ‘decision grounding’. Additional analysis of the data was needed on conditions that could contribute to the quality of ECR sessions. Objective: The aim of this study was to explore conditions for clarifying (...)

Objectives: The overall aim of the study was to describe perceptions of the paediatric hospital ethical climate among healthcare professionals who treat/care for children with cancer. Who Is Our Neighbor? Other-Than-Human People and Climate-Change Organizing.Cecilia Titizano - 2024 - Journal of Catholic Social Thought 21 (2):325-341.
Getting to know one’s neighbor is one of the basic tenets of traditional community organizing. The author expands conceptions of who one’s neighbors are. First, she introduces one-on-one campaigns, expanding this principle in the presence of other-than-human people and transforming community organizing into a cosmic effort to bring shalom to creation. Second, the author reads Laudato si’ through the eyes of Querida Amazonia, wherein Pope Francis invites all to drink from Indigenous millennial wisdom. With the help of Andean-Indigenous Christian ontology, (...)

Assimilata alla teologia di al-Kindi e trasposta nel ruolo di scienza universale, la metafisica così concepita rappresenta il presupposto da cui muoverà Avicenna.
