It is argued that medical science requires a classificatory system that (a) puts functions in the taxonomic center and (b) does justice ontologically to the difference between the processes which are the realizations of functions and the objects which are their bearers. We propose formulae for constructing such a system and describe some of its benefits. The arguments are general enough to be of interest to all the life sciences.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDer Aufsatz stellt einen neuen Ansatz zur Klrung des Leib-Seele-Problems vor. Zu diesem Zweck wird eine Brcke vom Leib-Seele-Problem zu Peter Knauers Entwurf einer relationalen Ontologie geschlagen, welche die Geschpflichkeit des Menschen und der Welt auf originelle Weise reformuliert. Teil I argumentiert, dass unsere Selbstbeschreibung die Dualitt der Ersten-Person-Perspektive und der Dritten-Person-Perspektive ernst nehmen sollte und zwar nicht nur in einem epistemologischen, sondern auch in einem ontologischen Sinn. Das jedoch fhrt, so wird gezeigt, zu einer ontologischen Beschreibung des Menschen (...) als unauflslicher Einheit von gegenstzlichen Bestimmungen bzw. Eigenschaften. Diese Einheit von Gegenstzen verlangt nach einer angemessenen Erklrung; einer Erklrung, welche die hartnckigen Probleme des Substanz- und Eigenschaftsdualismus ebenso vermeidet wie des reduktiven Monismus. Teil II stellt das Konzept der relationalen Ontologie in Grundzgen vor, whrend Teil III einer Erklrung des Leib-Seele-Problems auf der Grundlage dieses ontologischen Entwurfs gibt.SUMMARYThis paper presents a new approach in order to clarify the mind-body-problem. To reach this goal, the mind-body-problem is linked with Peter Knauer's outline of a relational ontology, which reformulates the creaturality of man and world in an inventive way. In the first part I argue that our self-description should take seriously the duality of first-person- and third-person-perspective not only in an epistemic but also in an ontological sense. This leads to an ontological description of man as an indissoluble unity of opposite attributes or properties. This unity of opposites requires an adequate explanation; one, which avoids the adamant problems of substance- and property-dualism as well as of reductive monism. Part II represents the main features of the concept of relational ontology, while part III gives an explanation of the mind-body-problem on the basis of this concept. (shrink)

If there is a sense of beauty, what is its nature? The main problem we are confronted with here is that on the one hand a sense of beauty, somehow, has to be connected with perception. On the other hand it does not seem to be reducible to it. I argue that a sense of beauty should be analyzed as a faculty of reason. Like other parts of the social system, education is becoming an information-driven venture: data technologies pervade all levels of the system. This datafication of education seems to take place alongside a general turn to learning that Gert Biesta has called learnification: a progressively singular focus on the manipulable features of individual learning in education. Given rapidly rising levels of datafication, it seems timely to take up Luhmann and Schorr’s contention that education entails a technology deficit and discuss datafication as reflection (...) issue in the system of education. Against their argument that human learning is not amenable to a technology, I develop the counter-argument that data technologies are replacing human learning outright with data at the level of organisation. Data thus present a concretely digital form of what Raf Vanderstraeten has called education as an ersatz order. In a data-driven form of organising education, human dimensions of learning become secondary to a systemic dimension: making learning visible as data and so susceptible to databased manipulation. The text treats school-wide positive behaviour support interventions as an evidence-based exemplar of this trend towards datafication in the system of education. (shrink)

Der Fortgang _~ieser Untersuchungen hat in einer Reihe von Aufsätzen seinen Niederschlag gefUhden, die seit 1950 erschienen sind und auf die hier fallweise zurückgegriffen wird.
