Abstract.In this essay I examine the new sciences of religion, spanning the traditional fields such as the psychology, sociology, and anthropology of religion to new fields such as the economics, neurosciences, epidemiology, and evolutionary psychology of religion. The purpose is to welcome these approaches but also delineate some of their philosophical and theological limitations. I argue for pluralistic methodologies in the scientific study of religious and spiritual phenomena. I argue that religious persons and institutions should welcome these investigations, because science (...) affects only interpretative strategies and does not present a fundamental challenge to core religious commitments. Indeed, the new sciences of religion can help religions in becoming more effective and wholesome. I am critical of confusing the scientific study of religion with scientism and trace this ideological project back to August Comte. In the end I deconstruct the metaphoric boundary that places religion on the inside as the object and science as the subject on the outside looking in. (shrink)

RESUMENEn el presente trabajo queremos mostrar cómo en Gabriel Marcel la existencia tan sólo puede ser reconocida a partir de la condición encarnada del hombre. Para ello, contrapondremos primeramente la existencia a la objetividad, gracias a las nociones capitales de presencia y de participación. En segundo lugar, mostraremos cómo el cuerpo propio es fundamento de nuestro ser en el mundo. Este trabajo pretende introducir al lector en la problemática de la intersubjetividad desde la perspectiva de Paul Ricoeur, considerando el doble acceso, ético y gnoseológico, a la realidad del otro. Se estudiará en primer lugar cómo, a los ojos de Ricouer, la fenomenología husserliana debe enfrentar su prueba más definitoria, la de la explicitación del fenómeno de la intersubjetividad, y cómo puede superarla. En segundo lugar, se mostrará cómo Ricoeur no reduce el acceso al otro a la constitución egológica, sino (...) que, por el contrario, la subordina al a priori ético del respeto, que pone al otro como otro antes de cualquier tipo de constitución fenomenológica o de aproximación simpática. Es nuestra intención mostrar que no se trata en Ricouer de excluir ninguno de los dos accesos, sino que se trata de una fenomenología genética que rastrea lo extraño desde lo propio, atendiendo ante todo a la intencionalidad ética del hombre como lo definitorio en el orden intersubjetivo. Originally published in English in 1980, _Rhetoric as Philosophy _has been out of print for some time. The reviews of that English edition attest to the importance of Ernesto Grassi’s work. By going back to the Italian humanist tradition and aspects of earlier Greek and Latin thought, Ernesto Grassi develops a conception of rhetoric as the basis of philosophy. Grassi explores the sense in which the first principles of rational thought come from the metaphorical power of the (...) word. He finds the basis for his conception in the last great thinker of the Italian humanist tradition, Giambattista Vico. He concentrates on Vico’s understanding of imagination and the sense of human ingenuity contained in metaphor. For Grassi, rhetorical activity is the essence and inner life of thought when connected to the metaphorical power of the word. (shrink)

Hermes es un dios de la mitología griega que fascina por sus ambivalencias y ambigüedades. Sin tener un lugar en el panteón griego, siendo un intermediario entre el Olimpo y la Tierra, es un patrono de quienes comparten su condición nómade. Es el dios de los mercaderes, de los viajantes, de los traductores y comunicadores... y es también patrono de los ladrones. Que el dios del lenguaje y de la mediación sea también el "dios de los ladrones" muestra algo que (...) es propio del lenguaje: su desapropiación. No pertenece a nadie y pertenece a todos, migra de unas manos a las otras. En este juego de robos, comercios, intercambios, deudas y ofertas, el lenguaje muestra su ambivalencia como espacio de comunión y de conflicto. En él se produce la disputa por los sentidos del mundo. Although Political Theology examined mainly the political dimension of the relationship between God-Father and God-Son, it is paramount to consider the political performance of the Holy Spirit in the Economy of Redemption. The Holy Spirit has been characterized as the binding cause and the principle of relationality both referring to God’s inner life and to God’s relationship with His creatures. As the personalization of relationality, the Holy Spirit performs a unique task: to bring together what is apart by means of (...) organisation. This power of the Spirit to turn a plurality into a unity is manifested in the Latin translation of oikonomía as disposition, that is, giving a special order to the multiple elements within a certain totality. Within this activity of the Spirit, Theodicy can be regarded as the way to depict God’s arrangement of the world and of history, bringing everything together towards the eschatological Kingdom of God. The paper aims at showing this fundamental activity of the Holy Spirit in Christian Theology, and intends to pose the question on how to think on a theology beyond theodicy, that is, how to think on a Trinitarian God beyond the categories of sovereignty and totalization. La Universidad es el espacio en el que los diversos saberes pueden reconocerse como participantes de un mismo proceso de conocimiento. La naturaleza fronteriza de la Universidad la lleva a ubicarse en el cruce de intereses nacionales y de una vocación universal, tensión que se manifiesta en su doble tarea de formar profesionales y de preparar el suelo para un sistema del saber. Aún más, en tanto que obedece a un interés nacional económico-político, la Universidad traslada la lógica de la (...) división del trabajo y de la especialización al ámbito del saber, lo cual genera la atomización de los saberes. La consigna de la interdisciplina busca remediar estas consecuencias, pero supone la interdisciplina como una meta a alcanzar. En este ensayo, propongo pensar, en cambio, a la interdisciplina como la naturaleza de todo saber. Los saberes no son totalidades cerradas y autosuficientes, sino el resultado de una interrelación entre todos los discursos. La noción de un saber singular plural expresa esta naturaleza relacional del conocimiento. Las Humanidades ayudan a volver sobre esta común pertenencia de todo discurso a los demás gracias a que enfatizan la raigambre de todos ellos en la experiencia vivida, su articulación en el orden simbólico, y su motivación pragmática: de ese modo invita a todo saber a reconocerse también como una expresión contingente de un determinado sistema del saber, también de carácter histórico. La naturaleza interdisciplinar de todo discurso nos lleva a pensar la Universidad como un espacio cenobítico, en el que todos los saberes son convocados a una misma celebración, en una vida que es esencialmente relacional y en el que el saber puede florecer. La historia que Agustín de Hipona nos cuenta de sí mismo en sus Confesiones nos confronta con la esencial ambivalencia del lenguaje y la textualidad. Por un lado, los textos son ocasión para que los hombres se pierdan en cuestiones vanas y para que alimenten su soberbia. Por otro lado, es a través de los textos que Agustín encuentra el camino hacia Dios y la Verdad: la lectura de Cicerón, de Plotino y, ante todo, de las Sagradas Escrituras, lo llevan (...) a la conversión. Sin embargo, la ambivalencia de las letras muestra su mayor tensión en que es el mismo texto de la Biblia el que, al mismo tiempo, lo aleja y lo acerca a Agustín a Dios. En última instancia, la ambivalencia de las letras se resuelve en el modo en que el lector hace uso de ellas, en el modo en que las toma y se las apropia al modo de ser apropiadas por ellas. Las Confesiones son la historia de un letrado, el drama de una lectura que puede condenarnos tanto como salvarnos. (shrink)

This paper is an extended discussion of Robert Ulanowicz’s critique of mechanistic and reductionistic metaphysics of science. He proposes “process ecology” as an alternative. In this paper I discuss four sets of question coming out of Ulanowicz’s proposal. First, I argue that universality remains one of the hallmarks of the scientific enterprise even with his new process metaphysics. I then discuss the Second Law of Thermodynamics in the interpretation of the history of the universe. I question Ulanowicz’s use of the (...) terms “random” and “chance” in his definition of process. Finally, I discuss what difference a relational and process metaphysics might make in addressing the political and practical problems in the twenty-first century. (shrink)

This essay is William Grassie's valedictory remarks at the Metanexus Institute's 2007 Annual Conference. Grassie asks what is wrong with religion, what is wrong with science, and why the constructive engagement of the two holds the key to setting things right. He cites Sir John Templeton and others to make his case and proposes a new curriculum for general science education that uses the history of nature as a mnemonic and context for promoting better science literacy and the incorporation of (...) science into our cultural traditions. In this paper I will argue that Christian theology is rooted in liturgical practices, being theology the theoretical reflection on the ritual practices of the Church. I will show that Christian Personal Theism stems from a liturgical practice by which we praise God as Father Almighty. Taking into account Eleonor Stump’s idea of _Franciscan knowledge_, and Nicholas Wolterstorff’s and Terence Cuneo’s works on liturgy and theology, I argue that God is deemed in our religious practices as a person to whom (...) we honor and praise. I will, then, focus on the title of God in our Credo as Father Almighty to show the political meaning of _Páter Pantokrátor_. Attending to this political dimension, I will examine Thomas Aquinas’ definition of religion as a special part of the virtue of justice that is connected to _piety_ and the honor we owe to God as our Father and Lord. Third, I will take Basil of Caesarea’s argument on the holiness of the Holy Spirit to show how the configuration of God as Father Almighty entails as well the configuration of all His creatures as His servants and children. The objective of this paper is to consider the essential role that liturgy plays in the epistemology of theology and the need to complete an analytic perspective with Political Theology and hermeneutics.
