The link between oncogenesis and normal development is well illustrated by the study of the Wnt family of proteins. The first Wnt gene (int‐1) was identified over a decade ago as a proto‐oncogene, activated in response to proviral insertion of a mouse mammary tumor virus. Subsequently, the discovery that Drosophila wingless, a developmentally important gene, is homologous to int‐1 supported the notion that int‐1 may have a role in normal development. In the last few years it has been recognized that (...) int‐1 and Wingless belong to a large family of related glyco‐proteins found in vertebrates and invertebrates. In recognition of this, members of this family have been renamed Wnts, an amalgam of int and Wingless. Investigation of Wnt genes in Xenopus and mouse indicates that Wnts have a role in cell proliferation, differentiation and body axis formation. Further analysis in Drosophila has revealed that Wingless function is required in several developmental processes in the embryo and imaginal discs. In addition, a genetic approach has identified some of the molecules required for the transmission and reception of the Wingless signal. We will review recent data which have contributed to our growing understanding of the function and mechanism of Drosophila Wingless signaling in cell fate determination, growth and specification of pattern. BackgroundBiobanking biospecimens and consent are common practice in paediatric research. We need to explore children and young people’s (CYP) knowledge and perspectives around the use of and consent to biobanking. This will ensure meaningful informed consent can be obtained and improve current consent procedures.MethodsWe designed a survey, in co-production with CYP, collecting demographic data, views on biobanking, and consent using three scenarios: 1) prospective consent, 2) deferred consent, and 3) reconsent and assent at age of capacity. The survey was disseminated (...) via the Young Person’s Advisory Group North England (YPAGne) and participating CYP’s secondary schools. Data were analysed using a qualitative thematic approach by three independent reviewers (including CYP) to identify common themes. Data triangulation occurred independently by a fourth reviewer.ResultsOne hundred two CYP completed the survey. Most were between 16–18 years (63.7%, N = 65) and female (66.7%, N = 68). 72.3% had no prior knowledge of biobanking (N = 73).Acceptability of prospective consent for biobanking was high (91.2%, N = 93) with common themes: ‘altruism’, ‘potential benefits outweigh individual risk’, 'frugality', and ‘(in)convenience’.Deferred consent was also deemed acceptable in the large majority (84.3%, N = 86), with common themes: ‘altruism’, ‘body integrity’ and ‘sample frugality’. 76.5% preferred to reconsent when cognitively mature enough to give assent (N = 78), even if parental consent was previously in place. 79.2% wanted to be informed if their biobanked biospecimen is reused (N = 80).ConclusionProspective and deferred consent acceptability for biobanking is high among CYP in the UK. Altruism, frugality, body integrity, and privacy are the most important themes. Clear communication and justification are paramount to obtain consent. Any CYP with capacity should be part of the consenting procedure, if possible. (shrink)

In Histories & Discourses he carries out a change of perspective from media and communication studies to studies of culture and the philosophy of language.His ‘rewriting’ of constructivism shows that classical constructivism shares some fundamental assumptions with realism, and he creates a new vocabulary which allows us to understand how we construct truth, identity, ethics, etc., without using any point of reference which lies (...) beyond our culture. Dispositional essentialism is a non-Humean view about the essences of certain fundamental or natural properties that looms large in recent metaphysics , not least because it promises to explain neatly the natural modalities such as laws of nature, counterfactuals, causation and chance. In the current paper, however, several considerations are presented that indicate a serious tension between its essentialist core thesis and natural “metaphysical” interpretations of its central explanatory claims.

Zusammenfassung Zur Analyse der Mitgliederbindung in Sportvereinen wird ein akteurtheoretisches Modell entwickelt, das auf der verallgemeinerten Handlungstheorie von Esser basiert. Dabei wird die Frage der Bindung von Sportvereinsmitgliedern als Entscheidungshandlung zwischen Austritt oder weiterer Mitgliedschaft konzeptualisiert und das Austrittsrisiko anhand der subjektiven Erwartungen und Bewertungen der Mitglieder sowie ihrer spezifischen Eingebundenheit in die Organisation Sportverein erklärt. Die aus dem Modell abgeleiteten Hypothesen werden auf der Grundlage zweier Mitgliederbefragungen in 20 bzw. 14 ausgewählten Sportvereinen empirisch geprüft und bestätigt. Es besteht ein (...) positiver Zusammenhang zwischen den Faktoren solidargemeinschaftliche Handlungsorientierung und Zufriedenheit mit den Leistungen des Vereins sowie der Mitgliederbindung. Jüngere Vereinsmitglieder treten eher aus dem Verein aus als ältere Mitglieder. Der Effekt des Faktors solidargemeinschaftliche Handlungsorientierung ist größer als der Effekt der Faktoren Zufriedenheit und Alter. Bei hoher solidargemeinschaftlicher Einbindung steht ein möglicher Austritt außer Frage. (shrink)

In this paper, we argue that the popular claim that laws of nature explain their instances creates a philosophical puzzle when it is combined with the widely held requirement that explanations need to be underpinned by ‘wordly’ relations. We argue that a “direct solution” to the puzzle that accounts for both explanatory laws and explanatory realism requires endorsing at least a radical metaphysics. Then, we examine the ramifications of a “skeptical solution”, i.e., dissolving it by giving up at least one (...) of these two claims, and argue that adopting it is more favorable to Humean reductionists than to anti-reductionists about laws of nature. Worin besteht die Natur von Kognition? Das Programm des Konnektionismus ist der Versuch, diese zentrale philosophische und kognitionswissenschaftliche Frage mittels sogenannter künstlicher neuronaler Netze (KNNs) zu beantworten. Der Konnektionismus ist von großem philosophischem Interesse, da er einen alternativen Ansatz zur ‚klassischen‘ komputationalistischen Theorie des Geistes verspricht, nach der der Geist so etwas wie ein digitaler Computer ist, der eine symbolische Sprache verarbeitet. Zudem spielen konnektionistische Ansätze eine zentrale Rolle bei der gegenwärtigen Entwicklung künstlicher Intelligenz. Siegfried Kracauer was a leading intellectual figure of the Weimar Republic and one of the foremost representatives of critical theory. Best known for a wealth of writings on sociology and film theory, his influence is felt in the work of many of the period’s preeminent thinkers, including his friends, the critic Walter Benjamin, and Theodor W. Adorno, who once claimed he owed more to Kracauer than any other contemporary.
