Este artículo se centra en la obra narrativa de la autora argentino-catalana-española Flavia Company (1963) y analiza el uso experimental de las formas y los géneros de la tradición literaria, centrándose fundamentalmente en el texto Dame placer (1999). Se propone una lectura de esta novela en diálogo temático-formal con otras obras literarias—propias y ajenas—, así como transformación de la tradición epistolar de las heroínas literarias seducidas y abandonadas. Igualmente, se pone de manifiesto la cuidadosa labor de la autora para (...) escribir la pasión en la anatomía del texto así como la búsqueda de la complicidad lectora, a través de la contrafigura de la narrataria. Hace un tiempo G. Rees señaló la importancia del razonamiento cuantitativo en el programa de la renovación del saber propuesto por F. Bacon, renovando la imagen tradicional de su método. Con la intención de proseguir el replanteo iniciado por Rees de los conceptos centrales del método baconiano, me propongo reexaminar el significado de la experimentación y de los instrumentos científicos, lo cual implica al mismo tiempo considerar la relación entre razón y sentidos. Para ello, examinaré el significado de los (...) sentidos como fuentes del conocimiento, la función de la experimentación y de los instrumentos para superar las limitaciones de los sentidos, la inserción de datos cuantitativos en el marco experimental, el concepto de sutilidad de la naturaleza y el sentido metodológico de la anatomía baconiana. Como conclusión señalo que en el método baconiano los sentidos están subordinados a la razón, ya que tanto los experimentos como los instrumentos científicos están sujetos a la autoridad de la razón para alcanzar la verdad y evitar sus errores. Este artículo examina de qué formas pueden defenderse conjuntamente los métodos de investigación con animales no humanos, el rechazo de los métodos que no impliquen el uso de animales, y la oposición a la experimentación con humanos. El artículo argumenta que la apelación a un salto axiológico o normativo entre el peso de los intereses humanos y de los animales no humanos tiene consecuencias inaceptables. A continuación, presenta otra serie de problemas implicados por las demás posiciones antropocéntricas. Finalmente, argumenta (...) que, aun si se acepta el antropocentrismo, el peso agregado de los intereses de los animales acaba superando al del interés humano en utilizarlos. (shrink)

Computational simulations are now useful tools in experimental life. Their novelty and continuous development make it very difficult to understand their epistemic relevance. In this paper a first evaluation of them is presented through a parallel between thought experiments and computational simulations. Both simulations that play the role of actual experiment and also simulations that are part of experiments will be under scrutiny, since both of them are important in the understanding of contemporary experiments. But simulations as parts of actual (...) experiments can especially show a new face in the complex relation theory-experiment. (shrink)

El artículo analiza cómo la revista Medicina e Morale ha afrontado en su historia el tema de la ética en la experimentación clínica, que representa una parte muy amplia y compleja de la bioética y también de la deontología médica. Los aspectos que esta temática comprende son ya numerosos y la literatura producida ingentísima. La ética de la experimentación ha recibido particular impulso y atención a continuación de diversas experimentaciones no éticas que han turbado profundamente la opinión pública (...) y hecho necesario una fuerte reconsideración en el ámbito de la investigación clínica. En general, de los años 60's a los años 80's del siglo XX, ha prevalecido en la literatura un intenso empeño e interés en la elaboración de los principios de referencia y en la reflexión teórica relativa a varias cuestiones . De los años 90 en adelante se ha en cambio intensificado -probablemente por las exigencias nacidas en seno de los Comités de ética que precisamente en aquel período han iniciado a difundirse masivamentela elaboración de códigos, reglamentos, líneas-guía que han orientado el desarrollo de la disciplina más en sentido de procedimiento y con un acercamiento ético-deontológico. En particular, Medicina e Morale, ha estado siempre en estas temáticas, desde los inicios de su historia, constituyendo una voz original en el debate, además que un instrumento de difusión de documentos nacionales y sobre todo internacionales. La Revista ha representado, sobre todo en los últimos treinta años, un verdadero punto de referencia a nivel nacional y en algunos casos también internacional, proponiendo a veces orientaciones originales, que han sido luego acogidas en el ámbito de líneas-guía y de normativas.The article deals with how the journal Medicina e Morale has faced ethics in clinical trials, which represents a very large and complex bioethical issue, but also deontological one. This area comprises many questions and the literature is huge. It has risen after unethical clinical trials that have shocked the public and have produced a big rethinking about it. In general, from the '60s to the '80s of the XXth century, an intense commitment and interest have prevailed on the elaboration of the reference principies and on theoretical reflection on various issues, such as informed consent, the ethical significance of clinical research, the protection of vulnerable people, the risk acceptability). Since the '90s onwards the development of codes, regulations, guidelines -that have guided the development of the discipline in a procedural and also deontological sense- has increased, probably due to the large diffusion of ethics committees. Particularly, the journal "Medicina e Morale" has always been present on these issues, since the beginning of its history, creating an original voice in the debate, as well as a dissemination tool of national and especially international documentabon. The journal has been, especially in the last thirty years, a real national, and sometimes international, be nchmark, offering original suggestions which are then accepted in guidelines and regulations. Debate among scientists is frequently hampered by intense difficulties in communicating and translating their viewpoints. This well-known fact illustrates the role of unarticulated core knowledge in the activities of sientific communities. But it has been little noticed that the issue afficts not just written science, but especially traditions of experimental activity and their products, including instruments and techniques. The question is addressed on the basis of examples from the history of optics and electromagnetism - Fresnel and Brewster, Maxwell and Hertz (...) - and texts from Kuhn's Structure. Particular attention is paid to interrelations between succeeding theories, and to the notorious problem of theory-choice. (shrink)

In this paper I examine the roles that experiment plays in science. Experiment can test theories, but it can also call for a new theory. Experiment can also provide hints about the mathematical form of a theory. Likewise it can provide evidence for the existence of the entities involved in our theories. Finally, it may also have a life of its own, independent of theory. I will illustrate these roles using episodes from the history of contemporary physics. Desde el descubrimiento de los estímulos supernormales hasta nuestros días, la variabilidad de su finalidad se ha visto comprometida por los diferentes sectores o disciplinas que se han aprovechado de ellos. Han sido aplicados unas veces con resultado positivo y otro negativo para el ser humano, independientemente de su finalidad. En este escrito señalamos su uso en el campo estético en general y artístico en particular, analizando experiencias estéticas relacionadas con la publicidad, la redes sociales, el cine y, específicamente el (...) caso del porno y el belkitsch. Para esta consecución, hacemos uso de los resultados interdisciplinares de diversas investigaciones neurocientíficas, psicológicas, artístico-estéticas y hermenéuticas, así como de un empirismo pragmático y didáctico, aplicando esta ecuación a la explicación de nuestra hipótesis. Entendemos la transversalidad como la clave del procesamiento de cualquier experiencia en general y sobre todo estética. (shrink)

The last technological developments have introduced a huge amount of hardware, communication systems, and information systems into life of human beings. But also has brought a multiplicity of images, objects and sensitive experiences having a direct effect in social life. It can be said that this amount of current elements deserve to be analyzed in order to try to clarify the nature of information technology and its political impact. That means that far over history of scientific developments, it is precise (...) to take into account a critical task of the role of the information techniques in different levels of society (moral, social and economic levels), but after all the role playing in the way we perceive the world. For that, we treat some of the technological developments related to virtual reality; then, we handle the concept of simulation, and finally we establish the distinction between reality and virtuality. We propose a formal framework for interpretable machine learning. Combining elements from statistical learning, causal interventionism, and decision theory, we design an idealised explanation game in which players collaborate to find the best explanation for a given algorithmic prediction. Through an iterative procedure of questions and answers, the players establish a three-dimensional Pareto frontier that describes the optimal trade-offs between explanatory accuracy, simplicity, and relevance. Multiple rounds are played at different levels of abstraction, allowing the players to explore overlapping (...) causal patterns of variable granularity and scope. We characterise the conditions under which such a game is almost surely guaranteed to converge on a optimal explanation surface in polynomial time, and highlight obstacles that will tend to prevent the players from advancing beyond certain explanatory thresholds. The game serves a descriptive and a normative function, establishing a conceptual space in which to analyse and compare existing proposals, as well as design new and improved solutions. (shrink)

El artículo intenta promover una recepción más amplia de los trabajos recientes sobre filosofía de la actividad científica experimental. Primero se comentarán los orígenes y las características de la tradición teoreticista predominante, criticando sus presupuestos y sus "miserias". Se analizará luego la función de los instrumentos, proponiendo una tipología de la actividad experimental, aunque elemental --esperamos-- útil. Tras analizar la estructura del experimento, empleando contribuciones de Pickering y otros, discutiremos la dinámica de la experimentación: los procesos de formación de (...) datos. Ésta es, obviamente, la cuestión más crucial y debatida, de la que depende la especificidad y fiabilidad de los métodos científicos. /// This paper attempts to promote a more widespread reception of recent work on the philosophy of experimental scientific activity. First, we comment on the origins and character of the predominant theoreticist tradition, offering critical remarks on its assumptions and "poverty". Then we analyze the function of instruments, proposing a coarse but hopefully useful typology of experimental activity. After analyzing the structure of experiment, drawing on work by Pickering and others, we discuss the dynamics of experimentation --the processes of data formation. This study investigated ideological belief bias, and whether this effect is moderated by analytical thinking. A Swedish nationally representative sample (N = 1005) evaluated non-political and political syllogisms and were asked whether the conclusions followed logically from the premises. The correct response in the political syllogisms was aligned with either leftist or rightist political ideology. Political orientation predicted response accuracy for political but not non-political syllogisms. Overall, the participants correctly evaluated more syllogisms when the correct response was congruent with their (...) ideology, particularly on hot-button issues (asylum to refugees, climate change, gender-neutral education, and school marketization). Analytical thinking predicted higher accuracy for syllogisms of any kind among leftists, but it predicted accuracy only for leftist and non-political syllogisms among rightists. This research contributes by refining a promising paradigm for studying politically motivated reasoning, demonstrating ideological belief bias outside of the United States across diverse political issues, and providing the first evidence that analytical thinking may reduce such bias. We extend the monotonic and regular modal logics to the multi-modal cue, and give semantical characterization w.r.t. a semantics of minimal frames. For this we introduce a calculus over neighbourhoods and we obtain simpler conditions than those from the literature.

Muchos investigadores han atribuido a los videojuegos un enorme potencial al uso de éstos en procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje. Este artículo pretende analizar mediante la experimentación del videojuego «Assassin’s Creed Origins», si es apto para su uso como recurso didáctico en la enseñanza, incluyendo aspectos procedimentales y actitudinales relacionados con las Ciencias Sociales; y más concretamente para la enseñanza y aprendizaje de los diferentes campos o apartados sociales, tales como la economía, la sociedad, la gestión, división o reconocimiento del territorio (...) egipcio. A modo de resumen, nos plantearemos si el videojuego es capaz de transmitir o se reconocen en él, elementos fundamentales de la cultura del antiguo Egipto y en especial de su patrimonio, cuyo legado ha llegado hasta nuestros días. Al momento de indagar sobre la experimentación en Galileo Galilei, es difícil identificar qué tipo de experimentos, efectivamente, realizó. Esto se debe, fundamentalmente a que, al abordar la obra de Galileo, no se logra diferenciar qué experimentos realizó y cuáles no. Además, nuestra concepción de la experimentación moderna, enturbia nuestra indagación. Y eso es lo que, de alguna manera, vamos a tratar de responder aquí: ¿Galileo hacía experimentos? Para lograrlo, se partirá de la idea de “experimento” desde la (...) intuición más básica: “[…] como un modo de conocer algo inmediatamente antes de todo juicio formulado sobre lo aprehendido”. Y, adicionalmente, de la distinción entre experimentos míticos, experimentos imaginarios –o de pensamiento1– y experimentos reales. (shrink)

The purpose of this article is to expose, comment on and analyse the procedures of scientific research and the experimental techniques in the biomedical sciences of the 17th century, with Francesco Redi as the main figure of this study. Specifically, we would like to show how the path through which experimentation takes place in the field of biomedical sciences is not necessarily animated by the physical-mathematical spirit that would supposedly characterise the trite category of «Scientific Revolution», without it being prejudice (...) for the use of precise scientific methods and the obtaining of highly effective experimental results. The term ‘formal ontology’ was first used by the philosopher Edmund Husserl in his Logical Investigations to signify the study of those formal structures and relations – above all relations of part and whole – which are exemplified in the subject-matters of the different material sciences. We follow Husserl in presenting the basic concepts of formal ontology as falling into three groups: the theory of part and whole, the theory of dependence, and the theory of boundary, continuity (...) and contact. These basic concepts are presented in relation to the problem of providing an account of the formal ontology of the mesoscopic realm of everyday experience, and specifically of providing an account of the concept of individual substance. Central topics in medieval logic are here treated in a way that is congenial to the modern reader, without compromising historical reliability. The achievements of medieval logic are made available to a wider philosophical public then the medievalists themselves. The three genres of logica moderna arising in a later Middle Ages are covered: obligations, insolubles and consequences - the first time these have been treated in such a unified way. The articles on obligations look at the role of logical consistence (...) in medieval disputation techniques. Those on insolubles concentrate on medieval solutions to the Liar Paradox. There is also a systematic account of how medieval authors described the logical content of an inference, and how they thought that the validity of an inference could be guaranteed. (shrink)

In this article, after presenting the basic idea of causal accounts of implementation and the problems they are supposed to solve, I sketch the model of computation preferred by Chalmers and argue that it is too limited to do full justice to computational theories in cognitive science. I also argue that it does not suffice to replace Chalmers’ favorite model with a better abstract model of computation; it is necessary to acknowledge the causal structure of physical computers that is not (...) accommodated by the models used in computability theory. Additionally, an alternative mechanistic proposal is outlined. (shrink)

Logical consequence in first-order predicate logic is defined substitutionally in set theory augmented with a primitive satisfaction predicate: an argument is defined to be logically valid if and only if there is no substitution instance with true premises and a false conclusion. Substitution instances are permitted to contain parameters. Variants of this definition of logical consequence are given: logical validity can be defined with or without identity as a logical constant, and quantifiers can be relativized in substitution instances or not. (...) It is shown that the resulting notions of logical consequence are extensionally equivalent to versions of first-order provability and model-theoretic consequence. Every model-theoretic interpretation has a substitutional counterpart, but not vice versa. In particular, in contrast to the model-theoretic account, there is a trivial intended interpretation on the substitutional account, namely, the homophonic interpretation that does not substitute anything. Applications to free logic, and theories and languages other than set theory are sketched. (shrink)

I defend moderate formalism about the aesthetics of nature. I argue that anti-formalists cannot account for the incongruousness of much natural beauty. This shows that some natural beauty is not kind-dependent. I then tackle several anti-formalist arguments that can be found in the writings of Ronald Hepburn, Allen Carlson, and Malcolm Budd.
