Bu çalışma, insanın bir eylemi olarak ortaya çıkan ırkçılık kavramını irdeleyerek Mbembe’nin bu kavramı nasıl tanımladığı ve bu kavramın insan varoluşunda nasıl bir anlam kazandığını göstermeyi hedeflemektedir. Ayrıca ırk, ırkçılık, zenci ve sömürgeci kavramları arasında nasıl bir ilişki olduğunu, Mbembe’nin önemli gördüğümüz iki eseri bağlamında irdeleyerek bu kavramlar üzerinde genel bir değerlendirme yapılmayı amaçlamaktadır.

In _Necropolitics_ Achille Mbembe—a leader in the new wave of Francophone critical theory—theorizes the genealogy of the contemporary world—a world plagued by ever-increasing inequality, militarization, enmity, and terror, as well as by a resurgence of racist, fascist, and nationalist forces determined to exclude and kill. He outlines how democracy has begun to embrace its dark side, or what he calls its “nocturnal body,” which is based on the desires, fears, affects, relations, and violence that drove colonialism. This shift has (...) hollowed out democracy, thereby eroding the very values, rights, and freedoms liberal democracy routinely celebrates. As a result, war has become the sacrament of our times, in a conception of sovereignty that operates by annihilating all those considered to be enemies of the state. Despite his dire diagnosis, Mbembe draws on post-Foucault debates on biopolitics, war, and race, as well as Fanon's notion of care as a shared vulnerability, to explore how new conceptions of the human that transcend humanism might come to pass. These new conceptions would allow us to encounter the Other not as a thing to exclude, but as a person with whom to build a more just world. (shrink)

It is dehumanising to identify people in terms of colour. Stereotyping and discrimination come with racial identification. Black identity has been expressed in different forms over the centuries. For a long period black identity was a constructed identity assigned to black people through a white-dominated matrix. After the end of slavery, efforts were made to reconstruct black identity. This developed into two divergent lines: one resulting in an illusionary identity as identified by Frantz Fanon and a second line of thought (...) of a continued search for a true authentic black identity as explicated by the Cameroon-born philosopher Achilles Mbembe. This process of creating a new authentic black identity is still ongoing and viewed by some as a pessimistic futile attempt. An example of the ongoing attempt for establishing an authentic black identity is illustrated by the movie Black Panther, which attempts to portray a different side of being black. (shrink)

This review article puts two recent publications —Existence and Heritage: Hermeneutic Explorations in African and Continental Philosophies by Tsenay Serequeberhan and What Fanon Said. A Philosophical Introduction to His Life and Thought by Lewis R. Gordon—in conversation with Achille Mbembe’s renowned On the Postcolony, first published in French in 2000, in English in 2001, and here reviewed in the 2015 Wits University Press edition. The opportunity for such a literary dialogue to take place across fifteen years is occasioned both (...) by the latest South African edition of On the Postcolony, which in itself invites a fresh reading of Mbembe’s manifesto on postcolonial authoritarianism in Africa, as well as by the different potential outcome of the postcolonial condition that Gordon and Serequeberhan envision and propose with respect to Mbembe. I argue that while Mbembe’s pessimistic portrayal of the postcolonial present is one whereby it is difficult to envision transformation, both Serequeberhan and Gordon’s books offer a rich philosophical terrain from which to imagine possible futures, grounded in notions of dialogue and solidarity, that, however, vary significantly for each author. Fanon’un düşüncesinde özgürleşmenin boyutlarını ortaya çıkarmayı amaçlayan bu çalışmaya göre, uyuşmazlığa dayanan siyaset özgürleşmenin öncelikli yoludur ve tam olarak bu sebeple Fanon’un düşüncesi özgürleşme siyaseti olarak adlandırılmayı doğrudan hak eder. Uyuşmazlık çıkarmak veyahut Fanon’daki biçimiyle, çelişkilerin farkında olma ve onları aşmak üzere evrenseli hedefleyen eylemlere girişme özgürleşme siyasetinin içeriğini oluşturur. Siyaseti inşa etmek için, öncelikle, kolonyal dünyanın çalışma şeklini anlamak gerekir. Kolonyal dünya sömürenin ve sömürülenin davranışları aracılığıyla işler. Fakat, özgürleşme siyasetinde özgürleşecek olanlar sömürülenler, siyahlar, kolonyal dünyanın çoğunluğunu oluşturan öteki (...) olduğu için, Fanon, özelde siyahların ve genelde de koloni halkının deneyimlerine odaklanır. Özgürleşmeyi ilk elde sömürülenin özgürleşmesi olarak gören Fanon aynı zamanda onu gerçek bir özgürleşme düzlemine doğru genişletir. Bu düzlemde efendi ve özne konumu dünyada artık bulunmaz ve evrensel eşitlik somutlaşır. Fanoncu özgürleşme siyaseti sömürülenlerin, yani tikelin özgürleşmesinden bütün dünyanın, evrenselin, bütün insanlığın özgürleşmesine doğru çok kapsamlı bir alana yayılır. Bu fikirden hareket eden bu çalışmanın ilk kısmı, kolonyal dünyanın mantığına, bu mantığın dayandığı kavramlara, unsurlara ve deneyimlere odaklanır. İkinci kısım ise, özgürleşmenin sömürülen (köle, siyah kişi) ve sömüren (efendi, beyaz kişi) ilişkisinin efendi ve köle arasındaki ilişki olmaktan çıkarılması ve köleliğe bir son verilmesi olduğundan hareketle, kolonyal dünyanın işleme şeklinin kesintiye uğramasıyla görünür olan özgürleşme siyasetine eğilir. Çalışmanın son kısmı da bu kesintiye uğratıcı/yıkıcı etkinliklerin nasıl Fanon tarafından şiddet ile birlikte düşünüldüğünden bahseder. Özgürleşme siyaseti açısından şiddetin şiddet olarak değil, fakat özgürleşme adına, bu mücadelenin sonucunda erişilecek yeni bir insanlık adına işlevselleştirildiğine dikkat çeker. Fanon düşüncesinde özgürleşmenin boyutlarıyla ilgilenen bu çalışma için özgürleşme sürecindeki yıkıcı etkinlikler ve dolayısıyla çatışmaya dayanan bu etkinliklerden biri olarak beliren karşı-şiddet, özgürleşmenin öncelikli yoludur. Bu etkinlikleri açık bir şekilde kapsayan Fanon düşüncesi de bu nedenlerle günümüzde özgürleşme siyasetinin düşüncesi olmanın yanı sıra bizatihi siyasal bir düşünce olarak hak eder. (shrink)

Résumé Frantz Fanon s’est concentré principalement sur la violence comme moyen de résistance et de libération anticoloniale, mais aussi sur l’humanisme et les possibilités de sa réalisation. Il s’agit pour lui de dépasser la conception manichéenne de l’Europe, mais aussi de la Négritude à propos de l’homme et d’inventer comme il dit « l’homme total ». Le silence a régné assez longtemps sur la réception des œuvres de Fanon après sa mort, à l’exception de sa réhabilitation vingt ans après aux (...) Antilles lors d’une commémoration. Depuis sa disparition, on est passé de la simple critique du colonialisme à partir du champ économique et politique vers le champ culturel plus complexe et l’essai d’une compréhension plus approfondie de notions telles que celles de « nation », « identité », « imaginaire » ou « hybridité ». De plus, à cette évolution a participé aussi bien le discours foucaldien à propos des pouvoirs que les études abordées par Gilles Deleuze et Jacques Derrida sur la connaissance et le sujet. Ces thèmes ont influencé énormément les auteurs américains des Études postcoloniales dans leurs approches critiques du fait colonial et des phénomènes socioculturels qui en résultent. Ce fut surtout le cas pour Edward Said ainsi que pour d’autres penseurs tels Achille Mbembe, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Homi K. Bhabha et bien d’autres. Mais ce sont avant tout Aimé Césaire, Frantz Fanon et Albert Memmi qui furent les théoriciens pionniers de ce mouvement. Ils ont en effet vécu la situation coloniale de manière directe et l’ont problématisée conceptuellement de sorte qu’ils ont dévoilé les différents aspects d’oppression et d’exclusion du colonialisme et donné ainsi une voix aux colonisés, subalternes et marginalisés. Cet article va tenter tout d’abord de rappeler la part critique de Frantz Fanon à l’égard de l’humanisme classique européen, mais aussi à celui de la Négritude. Par la suite il essaie de présenter sa conception d’un humanisme radical qui prend en considération l’homme, dire même l’humanité dans toute sa totalité, et à la fin il aborde les répercussions de la pensée fanonienne sur l’évolution politique actuelle ainsi que sur les Études postcoloniales. Este artigo procura pensar a filosofia com Frantz Fanon, isto é, apresentar as análises fanonianas como contributos para a atividade filosófica. Com isso o ponto inicial trata-se da advertência de Achille Mbembe para a ausência de “África” nas pesquisas atuais sobre Fanon. O artigo pretende mostrar que isso ocorre por duas vias: o Enfeitiçamento e o Reconhecimento. Elas são formas de manutenção do discurso que fundamenta um Narcisismo Branco, ou seja, uma filosofia que reproduz a imagem da filosofia europeia (...) como única alternativa. Ao fim, o artigo propõe uma filosofia corporificada que enfatiza as particularidades e sustenta a pluriversalidade filosófica. (shrink)

Most contemporary political theories of sovereignty – from Giorgio Agamben to Achille Mbembe – have argued that the emergency powers claimed by the Bush administration under the auspices of the War on Terror epitomized what Carl Schmitt calls a state of exception. If so, I argue, perhaps it is time for new visions of sovereignty to emerge, ones attendant to the eccentricities of the present conjuncture. Occupy Wall Street and the Arab Spring are but two obvious examples of counterpublics (...) that seem to have presented new modalities of sovereign life worth reflecting upon. Hardly states of exception, these are scenes of sovereignty that are more fraught and precarious, more democratic. I argue that the theories of sovereignty of George Bataille and Frantz Fanon may hold clues for coming to terms with these new sovereign scenes. Though often under-emphasized in the scholarly literature on Bataille and Fanon, for both thinkers sovereignty is a condition of existence, an expression of a surreal mode of esthetic experience and poetic beauty. I argue that drawing attention to the comparison of the political thought of Bataille and Fanon, and especially to the value of surrealism for contemporary political theory generally, holds promise for those of us interested in challenging the Schmittian consensus. At stake is a refreshed understanding of sovereignty, not as norm or exception, but as a condition of political life lived by everyday subjects caught in a surreal state in-between. (shrink)

Resumo: O racismo, enquanto problema estrutural e estruturante de nossa sociedade, afeta-nos cotidianamente, de formas muito profundas e nem sempre visíveis. A modernidade é frequentemente associada a suas conquistas de independência político-econômica, no território europeu, mas dificilmente é associada a seus atos nefastos, que são condições sine qua non para seu surgimento. São eles o engendramento do capitalismo, da colonização e, portanto, do racismo. O presente artigo tem por objetivo analisar os modos a partir dos quais o racismo se faz (...) presente, em nossa sociedade, enquanto Sul Global e herdeira do sistema escravista. Sendo esses modos muito diversos e impossíveis de serem tratados de maneira completa, foram definidos aqui três eixos principais para abordá-los: 1) a colonialidade como base da modernidade, 2) a precarização da força de trabalho no neoliberalismo e 3) as imagens paradigmáticas e aprisionadoras da mulher negra, na sociedade brasileira. Para dar conta dessa proposta, fez-se uma análise comparativa e dialógica de elementos específicos das obras de Frantz Fanon, Achille Mbembe e Lélia Gonzalez. Dessa forma, o trabalho pretende mostrar que todos esses eixos se relacionam de modo não ocasional, mas repetitivos e sistemáticos, em torno das categorias de capital, raça e objetificação sexual.: Racism, as a structural and structuring problem in our society, affects us daily in very profound and not always sought ways. Modernity is associated with its achievements of political and economic independence in European territory, but it is hardly associated with its nefarious acts, which are sine qua non for its emergence. They are the engine of capitalism, colonization, and therefore racism. This article aims to analyze the ways in which racism is present in our society, as the Global South and heir to the slave system. Since these modes are very diverse and impossible to be fully addressed, three main axes have been defined to address them: 1) coloniality as the basis of modernity, 2) precarious workforce in neoliberalism and 3) paradigmatic images and imprisonment of black women in Brazilian society. To account for this proposal, a comparative and dialogical analysis of specific elements of the works of Frantz Fanon, Achille Mbembe and Lélia Gonzalez was carried out. In this way, the work intends to show that all these axes are related in an occasional way, but repetitive and systematic around the categories of capital, race and sexual objectification. (shrink)

In this paper I track the deployment of Friedrich Nietzsche’s concept of ressentiment by three major thinkers in postcolonial theory, namely Frantz Fanon, Edward Said and Achille Mbembe. My argument is that while postcolonial theory has used ressentiment in a captivating way, which may have the potential for accounting for how contemporary moral culture conditions racism, nativism and xenophobia, the deployment remains incoherent. The postcolonial deployment of ressentiment begins with an incoherent reading of Nietzsche by Fanon, a mistake which (...) is creatively appropriated by Said and Mbembe. As ressentiment travels into the postcolony Nietzsche’s insights are discarded and the term is transformed through Hegelian and psychoanalytic schematics that take morality to be a universal and prescriptive code, the very problem that Nietzsche was attempting to overcome. Phenomenology is an emerging field within the broader domain of African and Africana philosophy. The phenomenological method, with its various approaches to studying the meaning of lived experience, is at the core of the thought of African philosophers such as Paulin Hountondji, Dismas A. Masolo, Achille Mbembe, Mabogo More, Tsenay Serequeberhan, Noel Chabani Manganyi, and proponents of Africana Philosophy such as WEB Du Bois, Frantz Fanon, Lucius Outlaw, Lewis Gordon, George Yancy, and Linda Martin Alcoff. Technically, the term “African (...) phenomenology” is not used as widely, or introduced as systematically, as Africana phenomenology. The aim of this chapter is to introduce some of the central issues and theorists of the field of African phenomenology. As the subtitle of this chapter indicates, its scope is limited to what one may call introductory perspectives in African phenomenology. The idea is to outline for further investigation some thematically related contributions to African phenomenology with specific reference to the grounding work of Paulin Hountondji as related to works of Kwasi Wiredu and Dismas A. Masolo. Hountondji’s critical adoption of Husserl’s classic phenomenological approach offers a broad, foundational scope, which makes it particularly suitable for a basic introduction to African phenomenology. Aunque la obra de Foucault haya influido en el pensamiento poscolonial y decolonial, a menudo se acusó al francés de eurocentrismo, renunciando, en algunos casos, a un diálogo enriquecedor entre su obra y estas corrientes de estudio. Teniendo como interés específico el tema del racismo, en este trabajo analizaremos primero el curso de Foucault Defender la sociedad y luego las contribuciones de pensadores y pensadoras decoloniales, de Frantz Fanon y Achille Mbembe. La consulta del archivo colonial ofrece posibles cronologías (...) acerca de la aparición del racismo de Estado que difieren con la de Foucault y sobre todo permite distinguir cómo este actúa en los distintos mecanismos de la analítica del poder. De este modo sostenemos que el racismo puede entenderse no solo como un dispositivo biopolítico, sino también como una dimensión fundamental del dominio que actúa al mismo tiempo como tecnología disciplinaria sobre el cuerpo del sujeto racializado y en el poder de muerte del soberano. A partir de uma afirmação feita por Achille Mbembe no ensaio Necropolítica, situando a Palestina como o exemplo mais bem organizado do necropoder, nós vamos analisar o seu duplo opositor, o Estado de Israel enquanto projeto filosófico-político da Terra prometida. O pano de fundo implícito de sustentação teórica de um dos conceitos mais célebres da filosofia mbembeana, a necropolítica, está nas contribuições decisivas da tese de Frantz Fanon presente nos Condenados da Terra. O objetivo é investigar como os processos (...) de colonização estão assentados sob uma fantasia responsável pelo surgimento da raça, analisando sua conexão com o capitalismo neoliberal e, em paralelo, como o estabelecimento de uma tribo eleita com direito natural de habitar a Terra prometida vincula-se ao exercício de necropoder. Resumo: O artigo apresenta um problema que se apresenta no tempo presente e que nos coloca diante da tarefa de repensar os paradigmas da educação e do pensamento. O texto questiona qual o impacto da globalização em como pensamos a Educação e a Filosofia. A base epistemológica do artigo se ancora no pensamento da desconstrução e nas suas interseções com o debate sobre políticas das diferenças e seu desenrolar em autores como Achille Mbembe, Louis Althusser, Frantz Fanon, Lélia Gonzales, (...) Jean-Luc Nancy, entre outros. No artigo apresentamos o conflito entre o mundo ocidental e seu pensamento único com a reflexão de autores que trazem aquilo que excede a este pensamento e que é marginalizado por ele. O tema da política sobre a vida é marcado por uma mudança na forma de governo exercida na institucionalização do biopoder, especialmente a partir da entrada do capitalismo como elemento balizador da governamentalidade. No presente artigo, o objetivo principal é mostrar como a biopolítica governamental, notadamente proposta pelos estudos de Michel Foucault, nos anos 70, desdobra-se e lastreia a tese da necropolítica de Achille Mbembe e suas implicações práticas na contemporaneidade. Para isso, comparo alguns excertos de textos de Foucault, (...) Fanon, Mbembe, Deleuze, Agamben, entre outros, no intuito de explorar como a biopolítica está presente na lógica de controle social, implementada e refinada tecnologicamente por governos, o que pode levar a diversos movimentos persecutórios e preconceituosos com determinados grupos sociais. Por fim, aponto como tais necropolíticas podem ser identificadas no Brasil atual, especialmente com base em relatórios de violência aqui analisados, estudos sobre desigualdade étnico-racial-social e combate socialmente seletivo no enfrentamento da pandemia da Covid-19, destacando a relevância e a atualidade de se discutir tais conceitos sob perspectiva descolonial. In _Critique of Black Reason_ eminent critic Achille Mbembe offers a capacious genealogy of the category of Blackness—from the Atlantic slave trade to the present—to critically reevaluate history, racism, and the future of humanity. Mbembe teases out the intellectual consequences of the reality that Europe is no longer the world's center of gravity while mapping the relations among colonialism, slavery, and contemporary financial and extractive capital. Tracing the conjunction of Blackness with the biological fiction of race, he theorizes (...) Black reason as the collection of discourses and practices that equated Blackness with the nonhuman in order to uphold forms of oppression. Mbembe powerfully argues that this equation of Blackness with the nonhuman will serve as the template for all new forms of exclusion. With _Critique of Black Reason_, Mbembe offers nothing less than a map of the world as it has been constituted through colonialism and racial thinking while providing the first glimpses of a more just future. In _Brutalism_, eminent social and critical theorist Achille Mbembe invokes the architectural aesthetic of brutalism to describe our moment, caught up in the pathos of demolition and production on a planetary scale. Just as brutalist architecture creates an affect of overwhelming weight and destruction, Mbembe contends that contemporary capitalism crushes and dominates all spheres of existence. In our digital, technologically focused era, capitalism has produced a becoming-artificial of humanity and the becoming-human of machines. This blurring of the natural (...) and artificial presents a planetary existential threat in which contemporary society’s goal is to precipitate the mutation of the human species into a condition that is at once plastic and synthetic. Mbembe argues that Afro-diasporic thought presents the only solution for breaking the totalizing logic of contemporary capitalism: repairing that which is broken, developing a new planetary consciousness, and reforming a community of humans in solidarity with all living things. L’Afrique a participé jusqu’a présent, souvent à titre de laboratoire, au développement de la science occidentale. Les défis rencontrés par la théorie critique aujourd’hui sont l’instrumentalisation de la théorie par les gouvernements, la prolifération de pratiques critiques diverses, notamment écologique, et surtout l’émergence d’un capitalisme de l’image et de l’affect. C’est en relation avec la Chine que l’Afrique peut apporter de nouvelles réponses et relever ces défis.

Au cours de cet entretien mené par Yala Kisukidi, Achille Mbembe revient sur les thèmes clés de son ouvrage Brutalisme (2020) : la définition de l’idée d’« Afrique », la nécessité de sortir d’une « histoire de la prédation » et de réinvestir des utopies par le « ré-enchantement », la revalorisation d’une « politique du soin » tandis que la terre est endommagée, la création d’un espace africain de libre circulation sont évoquées tour à tour. Convoquant les écrivains (...) Amos Tutuola et Sony Labou Tansi, Mbembe souligne le rôle de l’imaginaire, et singulièrement de la littérature, dans la fabrique des utopies de demain. L’art, entendu comme réserve de vie et de possibles, constitue une ressource pour penser les migrations contemporaines et imaginer d’autres modèles alternatifs au modèle actuel néolibéral. Face à la criminalisation des circulations, le pillage des ressources, la violence du « brutalisme » contemporain, Mbembe en appelle à une « politique du soin » capable d’inclure, depuis l’Afrique, la question du commun et du partage de la Terre. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 2023-2024 eğitim-öğretim yılı güz döneminde Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi ve Bursa Teknik Üniversitesi’nin çeşitli fakültelerinde öğrenim gören toplam 196 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada veriler Google Form aracılığı ile toplanmıştır. Veri toplama aracı olarak çalışmada kişisel bilgi formu ve “Tevbe....(metafor)…benzer, çünkü....(metafor sebebi)” cümlelerinin kullanıldığı yarı yapılandırılmış bir anket formu kullanılmıştır. Verilerin analizi ve yorumlanmasında içerik analizi tekniğinden (...) yararlanılmıştır. Araştırma sonunda 196 üniversite öğrencisi tarafından 70 farklı metafor üretildiği bulgulanmıştır. Araştırmada tevbe kavramına ilişkin üretilen metaforlarla ilgili tevbenin dinî işlevi ve tevbenin psikolojik işlevi olmak üzere 2 tema oluşturulmuştur. Tevbenin dinî işlevi temasına (%60,2) ait 3 kod oluşturulmuştur: Manevî arınma yolu, kutsalla buluşma ve iyi davranışlarda kararlılık. Tevbenin psikolojik işlevi temasına (%39,8) ait olarak da 3 kod oluşturulmuştur. Bu kodlar; psikolojik rahatlama, yeni bir başlangıç ve kendisiyle yüzleşmedir. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre metaforların manevî arınma yolu, kendisiyle yüzleşme ve yeni bir başlangıç kodlarında yoğunlaştığı tespit edilmiştir. (shrink)

Bu açıdan haset ve gıpta, dönüşüm ya da çözülme dinamiğinin bir parçası olarak işlev görmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, dindarlık ve psikolojik iyi oluş ile haset ve gıpta arasında anlamlı bir ilişkinin olup olmadığını ve eğer varsa bu ilişkinin yönünü tespit etmektir. Bu doğrultuda 18-65 (...) yaş aralığında Bursa’da ikâmet eden 179’u erkek, 335’i kadın olmak üzere toplam 514 katılımcıdan oluşan çalışma grubuna Haset ve Gıpta Ölçeği,Dindarlık Ölçeği ve Psikolojik İyi Oluş Ölçeği uygulanmıştır. Google Form aracılığı ile toplanan veriler SPSS 25.0 programı kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular, dindarlık ve psikolojik iyi oluş ile haset arasında negatif yönde ve anlamlı bir ilişki olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Bununla birlikte dindarlık ve psikolojik iyi oluş ile gıpta arasında anlamlı bir ilişki saptanmamıştır. (shrink)

This article analyses Achille Mbembe’s theorization of necropolitics and surplus life in dialogue with three comparable theorizations: Agamben’s ‘bare life’, Marxist scholarship on ‘relative surplus populations’, and Afropessimist theorizations of ‘social death’. I argue that Mbembe’s work allows us to develop a critique of sacrifice that at the same time (contra Agamben) recognizes how it plays a structural role within necropolitics. Examining the influence of Georges Bataille’s writings on sacrifice allows me to clarify this argument. The second part (...) of the article examines the ‘surplus life’ of necropolitics in comparative analysis, tracing some of the limits of Mbembe’s reading through a dialogue with Marxist and Afropessimist readings. I characterize Mbembe’s work in terms of a poetics and politics of surplus: ‘reserves of life’ are affirmed against the excess of violence characterizing the present. However, this critique of violence relies upon abrupt leaps from politics to abstract ethical appeals in ways that obscure the implications of Mbembe’s own analysis. (shrink)

In his latest work, Sortir de la grande nuit, the Cameroonian social theorist Achille Mbembe nuances his description of the ontological status of the postcolonial African subject, which he had theorized extensively in his best-known text, On the Postcolony, and at the same time exploits the conceptual resources of a number of Jean-Luc Nancy's lexical innovations. This recent text is also a reprise of an earlier autobiographical essay, and the gesture of this ‘reinscription’ is critical to our understanding of (...) Mbembe's status as a contemporary ‘postcolonial thinker’, and the way in which he positions himself in relation to a certain intellectual genealogy of postcolonial theory. Within this trajectory, I argue that we can read fruitfully his relationship to three influential figures: Jacques Derrida, Jean-Luc Nancy and Ruben Um Nyobè. (shrink)

As the first book to analyze the work of Fanon as an existential-phenomenological of human sciences and liberation philosopher, Gordon deploys Fanon's work to illuminate how the "bad faith" of European science and civilization have philosophically stymied the project of liberation. Necropolitics by Achille Mbembe takes us back to his seminal text on “Necropolitics” translated and published in the US in 2003. At this point, 40 years after Foucault’s Biopolitics, Mbembe was re-theorizing biopolitics through a necro horizon, which turned out to be a robust conceptual shift from Western thought. Not much else is explicitly said about necropolitics in the titular book, which comes 17 years after the seminal text that had a significant impact on the theory and practice (...) of philosophy, politics, anthropology, and esthetics. Mbembe presents the layers of forms, modes, and procedures of the necropolitical working through contemporary neoliberal global societies. It is therefore not surprising that Mbembe makes reference to theory in forms, form is the way to redefine or rephrase content, and “who should live and who must die” is currently the beginning. But how this is done in the 21st century, what are the methods and procedures to implement this central act in neoliberal global democracy —that is the task of this book. (shrink)
