La realidad social, política, económica y sanitaria que experimentamos hoy denota que vivimos una crisis planetaria que convulsa al conjunto de las relaciones sociales. Es un imperativo teórico, retomar la fecundidad del concepto de persona y la crítica de Emmanuel Mounier al positivismo y al marxismo del siglo XX. Su crítica se basó en la noción de persona, de profunda raíz en la teología cristiana occidental y hoy considerado Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad al permitir fundamentar la validez global de (...) los Derechos Humanos y la posibilidad de la creación de una Ética Universal. En la presente investigación se propone redimensionar el valor de la filosofía personalista de Mounier y su activismo evangélico hacia los pobres, como un nuevo humanismo de una dimensión más que teórica, práctica. A través de una revisión cronológica y bibliográfica de los momentos más relevantes del personalismo, esta investigación se propone en su conclusión, comprender la fecundidad de la reflexión del concepto de persona, como de la vigencia de la crítica de este pensador al positivismo y al marxismo; para contribuir a situar el eje ético y político- social de la actual situación sociosanitaria que atraviesa la humanidad. En este artículo examino el problema de si la concepción socrática de la eudaimonia entraña el egoísmo. Esto es, si, según Sócrates, un hombre que actúa teniendo como criterio final su felicidad es un egoísta. Este punto de vista parece entrar en contradicción con lo que pensamos comúnmente acerca de lo que debe decir una teoría moral. Clasifico los intentos que se han hecho por resolver el problema en dos grupos: los formalistas y los sustantivistas, con base en sus objetivos (...) generales. Argumento que la segunda clase de enfoque es más efectiva, puesto que trata de interpretar la teoría de Sócrates como un todo y la hace más coherente. Asume que Sócrates ofrece una teoría de la motivación humana para actuar en la que el agente busca su felicidad, pero otorgando también una función central a la amistad, el amor y la justicia. Most theories about virtue cultivation fall under the general umbrella of the role model approach, according to which virtue is acquired by emulating role models, and where those role models are usually conceived of as superior in some relevant respect to the learners. I argue that although we need role models to cultivate virtue, we also need good and close relationships with people who are not our superiors. The overemphasis on role models is misguided and misleading, and a good antidote (...) draws on the Aristotelian concept of character friendship. Character friendship constitutes a unique form of experience in which we share a substantial way of seeing with a close other; facilitates a unique form of knowledge, the knowledge of a particular person ; develops other emotions important for virtue cultivation besides admiration, such as love, shame, trust, and hope; and is a praxis in which cooperative interactions and discussions function as a bridge between habituation of virtue at home and the public life. Character friendship provides necessary elements for human cultivation of virtue that the sole experience of having a role model does not. (shrink)

Se trata de mostrar y analizar algunas de las lecturas que se han hecho de la obra de Mohandas Gandhi en América Latina en las últimas décadas, a través de un escrito que se balancea entre una investigación empírica y el estudio de un caso que permite presentar dos problemas teóricos. Para esto se abordan autores y autoras de diversos países de la región, que permiten aludir a dos problemas teóricos que se formulan en este trabajo: la circulación de las (...) ideas entre regiones Sur-Sur, la reelaboración de las ideas en la región receptora. Estos problemas son claves en el desarrollo de los estudios eidéticos como disciplina. Se realiza una introducción respecto a la recepción de las ideas de Gandhi en la región hacia 1930, estudiando las articulaciones del pensamiento de éste con otros autores y tendencias de pensamiento y señalando algunas recepciones y cruzamientos posteriores. Luego el trabajo se focaliza en estudiosos de Argentina, Brasil, Chile, México, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico y Venezuela, tratando de presentar varios casos diferentes y que cubran numerosos países de la región, apuntando a un muestreo válido, aunque sin suficiente afirmación metodológica. The intention of this work is to show and analyze some of the readings that have been done about Mohandas Gandhi’s work in Latin America in the last decades, by means of a writing that swings between an empirical research and the study of a case that allows to present two theoretical problems. For this there are approached authors and authoresses of diverse countries of the region, who allow to allude to two theoretical problems that are formulated in this work: the flow of the ideas between South-South regions, the reformulation of the ideas in the receiving region. These issues are key to the development of the eidéticos studies as a discipline. An introduction is made regarding the reception of the ideas of Gandhi in the region by 1930, studying the joints of his thought and of those of other authors and trends of thought, pointing out some receptions and later crosses. Then the work focuses in experts of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and Venezuela, trying to present several different cases covering numerous countries of the region, pointing at a valid sampling, though without sufficient methodological affirmation. The article analyses the distinction between the private and the public sphere from a conceptual and from a normative point of view. On the conceptual level, it is argued that the common dichotomous view is incomplete, giving rise to conceptual confusions which can be overcome by a careful distinction between the intimate and the private sphere. While the boundary between the private and the public is a conventional matter, the sphere of intimacy, including thoughts as well as a certain type (...) of actions, is empirically delimited. On the normative level, a number of arguments for or against the extension or restriction of the private sphere as well as for or against the intervention of the state in its citizens’ spheres of intimacy is discussed from a liberal point of view. Este artículo reconstruye panorámicamente la posición de Agustín de Hipona con respecto a la filosofía en la obra De civitate Dei. Sostiene que la valoración y el reproche que le hace Agustín a los platonici descansan en último término en un concepto de filosofía tomado del mismo platonismo y reinterpretado según textos bíblicos que enfatizan la centralidad de la mediación y el culto para alcanzar la beata vita.

Introducción: las tecnologías de la información y las comunicaciones se utilizan cada vez más en las universidades como medios de enseñanza. Se ha optado por el uso de los objetos de aprendizaje para lograr la reutilización, accesibilidad, durabilidad e interoperabilidad en sus recursos educativos. Objetivo: enunciar algunos de los valores humanos que se que se manifiestan en el proceso de autoformación con los objetos de aprendizaje. Método: se utilizó la observación como método científico durante el proceso enseñanza-aprendizaje con los objetos (...) de aprendizaje para la autoformación de los estudiantes. Resultados: se enunciaron algunos valores intelectuales, éticos, estéticos, físicos, morales y sociales, que se revelan en el proceso de autoformación con los objetos de aprendizaje. Conclusiones: Los valores humanos que manifiestan los estudiantes durante el proceso de autoformación con los objetos de aprendizaje sirven para establecer juicios de valor consistentes, derivados de modos de pensar y sentir que les permitan enfrentar sus decisiones vitales. Introduction: Information technology and communications are increasingly used in universities as teaching means in the teaching-learning process. The use of learning objects has been opted to achieve reusability, accessibility, durability and interoperability in its educational resources. Objective: To enunciate some human values occurring in the process of self-education with learning objects. Method: The observation as a scientific method for the teaching-learning process with learning objects for independent self-training of students was used. Results: There have been enunciated some intellectual, ethical, aesthetic, physical, moral and social values that are revealed in the process of self-training with learning objects. Conclusions: The human values that students showed during self-training with learning objects serve to establish consistent value judgments derived from modes of thinking and feeling that enable them to cope with their vital decisions. Sartre considers the rise of spontaneous not cognitive consciousness or prereflexive cogito as a subject. Without any conditions, without any nature or essence can be determined. The awareness event as an absolute necessity is indeed unjustifiable that refers to the world, is pure intentionality. The abstract ideal of freedom for Sartre is a conscience without any determination. Man is free because it is free of any determination by precognitive structure of consciousness.

Prior studies using the event-related potential (ERP) technique show that integrating sentential code-switches during online processing leads to a broadly distributed late positivity component (LPC), while processing semantically unexpected continuations instead leads to the emergence of an N400 effect. While the N400 is generally assumed to index lexico-semantic processing, the LPC has two different interpretations. One account suggests that it reflects the processing of an improbable or unexpected event, while an alternative account proposes sentence-level reanalysis. To investigate the relative costs (...) of semantic to language-based unexpectancies (i.e., code-switches), the current study tests 24 Spanish-English bilinguals in an ERP reading study. Semantically constrained Spanish frames either varied in their semantic expectancy (high vs. low expectancy) and/or their language continuation (same-language vs. code-switch) while participants’ electrophysiological responses were recorded. The Spanish-to-English switch direction provides a more naturalistic test for integration costs to code-switching as it better approximates the code-switching practices of the target population. Analyses across three time windows show a main effect for semantic expectancy in the N400 time window and a main effect for code-switching in the LPC time window. Additional analyses based on the self-reported code-switching experience of the participants suggest an early positivity linked to less experience with code-switching. The results highlight that not all code-switches lead to similar integration costs and that prior experience with code-switching is an important additional factor that modulates online processing. Cette hypothèse correspond bien à la situation socio-culturelle de l’époque des Pisistratides où l’on voit se développer les cultes de Dionysos, Déméter/Gaia/Meter et Perséphone, ainsi que des textes comme ceux que la tradition attribue à Onomacrite.The Little Mysteries of (...) Agra: Orphic Mysteries at the time of Peisistratos. The possibility of recognising Orphic elements in the Little Mysteries of Agra as early as the 6th century may be supported by evidence from literary and iconographic sources as well as from the historical context. This hypothesis ties in with the socio-cultural situation of Peisistratid times in which we can see the development of the cult of Dionysus and those of Demeter/Gaia/Meter and Persephone, and the flourishing of written texts, such as those attributed to Onomacritos. Paternalism, understood as coercive intervention with the behavior of a person in order to prevent her from causing harm to herself, is a highly controversial issue, because it implies a departure from the widely recognized principle of harm to others. Some conceptual differences between legal paternalism and other forms of state coercion that also depart from the principle of harm to others will be indicated. This is followed by an analysis of the arguments that are usually brought forth against legal (...) paternalism. Esta condición estudiada ya en autores como Marcel, Sartre y Merleau Ponty es retomada aquí como posibilidad para entender mejor las relaciones del hombre con el mundo y las diferentes vivencias que el ser humano experimenta en el proceso de su existencia. Para la Antropología filosófica entender la mediación cuerpo humano — mundo se convierte en punto (...) de partida y eje de estudios interdisciplinares que generan y facilitan un conocimiento integral del hombre como es el caso del estudio fenomenológico de la enfermedad y el dolor. El transhumanismo como filosofía e ideología tecnologicista tiene cada vez más adeptos y se coloca en los ámbitos académicos como una posición positiva, posible y deseable. Su implementación aparece solapada en una vida cotidiana que depende, como nunca antes, de los avances tecnológicos. La posición que manejaremos es que esta ideología, que sobredimensiona el papel de la tecnología en la sociedad, tiene una visión limitada respecto con los conflictos éticos, económicos y sociales que dimanan de sus presupuestos. El problema no (...) es negar la tecnología sino qué rol juega en la construcción de la sociedad. El transhumanismo puede estar vendiendo un falso sueño de libertad, donde la uniformidad, la ausencia de crítica, la discriminación y la separación radical entre pobres y ricos definan ese mundo paradisíaco que propone. The timing of the origin of flowering plants (Angiosperm) is hotly debated. It has been suggested that the disagreement between the fossil record of angiosperm origin strongly conflicts with the origin estimates generated by molecular clocks. I argue that this conflict reveals lessons about whether or under what conditions scientific disagreement is likely to bear fruit. Specifically, I point to issues of evidence quality and social epistemic structures which deserve more attention in understanding the productivity of disagreement.

El presente trabajo se centra en el análisis de dos instituciones que fueran concebidas como las más eficaces para la defensa de la autonomía individual: la democracia representativa y el mercado. Ambas aspiran a garantizar el máximo posible de libertad dentro de un marco normativo. Pero ambas, libradas a sí mismas, tienen también la propiedad disposicional de autodestruirse. Pueden, pues, ser llamadas «instituciones suicidas". El medio más eficaz para impedir que ello suceda es establecer límites éticos al funcionamiento de la (...) democracia representativa y del mercado. Tras someter a crítica diferentes propuestas formuladas al respecto -estrechamente vinculadas con el problema de la legitimidad de los sistemas políticos y la fundamentación racional de las normas morales- se esboza una vía de solución que parte de la aceptación de restricciones a las posibilidades de decisión parlamentaria («coto vedado») y de la formulación de 10 que podría llamarse «circunstancias del mercado». En la filosofía política contemporánea, hay dos conceptos que juegan un papel esencial para el tratamiento del problema de la legitimidad del Estado: el de consenso y el de racionalidad. Sin embargo, la importancia que generalmente se concede a estos conceptos no significa que exista acuerdo acerca del contenido semántico de racionalidad y acerca de las situaciones en que ha de practicarse el consenso racional, que es el que se supone permite juzgar acerca de la legitimidad del orden estatal. En (...) lo que sigue me propongo (1) recordar brevemente, y a guisa de ejemplo, posiciones que toman como marco del consenso alguna de las dos situaciones mutuamente excluyentes y conjuntamente exhaustivas: la situación fáctica o la hipotética; (II) exponer el concepto de racionalidad que ellas sustentan y (JII) sugerir un concepto de legitimidad en el que el consenso y la racionalidad juegan un papel diferente del que suele atribuírseles. Spin is a fundamental and distinctive property of the electron, having far-reaching implications. Yet its purely formal treatment often blurs the physical content and meaning of the spin operator and associated observables. In this work we propose to advance in disclosing the meaning behind the formalism, by first recalling some basic facts about the one-particle spin operator. Consistently informed by and in line with the quantum formalism, we then proceed to analyse in detail the spin projection operator correlation function \=\left\langle (...) \left \left \right\rangle \) for the bipartite singlet state, and show it to be amenable to an unequivocal probabilistic reading. In particular, the calculation of \\) entails a partitioning of the probability space, which is dependent on the directions \.\) The derivation of the CHSH- or other Bell-type inequalities, on the other hand, does not consider such partitioning. This observation puts into question the applicability of Bell-type inequalities to the bipartite singlet spin state. (shrink)

This article examines the challenges and pressures liberal arts programs are currently facing, as well as their responses to them. We argue that while liberal arts programs do in fact develop transferable skills that promote ‘work-place readiness,’ these skills are best understood as derivative goods of a liberal arts education and not the value of the education itself. Further, we argue that valuing the liberal arts for these derivative goods may be self-defeating—insofar as a liberal arts education is constituted by (...) a certain set of social norms, values, practices. Like friendship, therefore, a liberal arts education has instrumental value; however, pursuing a liberal arts education for the instrumental value may diminish (and may even preclude) the realization of these derivative goods and values. Un problema puede ser viejo por persistente, porque todavía no se ha encontrado la respuesta adecuada. Pero también puede ser viejo por recurrente, por reaparecer cuando se eliminan las condiciones que hicieron posible su solución en el pasado. Y un problema es nuevo cuando es el resultado de desafíos inéditos o hasta ahora desconocidos. El Estado de Derecho y Terrorismo es un viejo problema recurrente. El impacto de las investigaciones neurológicas en el concepto de responsabilidad es un viejo problema persistente. (...) La erosión de las estructuras institucionales a nivel internacional es un viejo problema persistente. Un nuevo problema es la relación entre ética, política y derecho desde el punto de vista de una fi losofía analítica. Enfrentarse a estos viejos y nuevos problemas de la fi losofía del derecho desde una perspectiva analítica en el contexto de América Latina es una tarea doblemente difi cultosa. (shrink)

Los tres conceptos mencionados en el título de mi presentación son conceptos referenciales negativos, es decir, constituyen el rechazo o apartamiento de conceptos supuestamente más básicos cuales son -en este caso- los de unidad, semejanza e igualdad. Si se admite esta aproximación conceptual, pienso que también cabe admitir que el valor o disvalor de aquellos dependerá de la concepción que uno tenga de estos últimos. Dado que, a su vez, la semejanza y la unidad pueden, en cierto modo, ser referidas (...) a la igualdad, intentaré aquí precisar el concepto de igualdad (I), recordaré algunas versiones de un pluralismo que considero moral y políticamente inaceptable (II) y, finalmente, propondré distinguir entre aquellas desigualdades que necesariamente habrán de darse en toda sociedad democrática y las discriminaciones socio-culturales propias de regímenes totalitariamente excluyentes (III). La expresión “Pensar en español” puede ser entendida en dos sentidos diferentes: como una exhortación o una descripción de un estado de cosas. En el primer caso tiene un carácter normativo: puede significar algo así como “¡hay que pensar en español!”. En el segundo caso, sería una formulación más o menos vaga sobre la existencia de una tradición intelectual relevante en lengua española. La primera interpretación es engañosa y puede tener consecuencias excluyentes o triviales. La segunda es parcialmente cierta. Propongo (...) una tercera interpretación: “pensar en español” podría entenderse como una invitación a no olvidar nuestro entorno hispano-parlante en el doble sentido del lugar físico e intelectual de nuestros esfuerzos para pensar con una cierta afirmación de originalidad. Our main hypothesis is that an extended moral agent cannot fulfill their expectation of “extendedness” without a dynamical and evolutionary ecosystem where the agent develops and behave properly. It is important to establish a bridge between extended moral agents and ecosystems for two reasons: first, because there is not an enough direct theoretical reflection about this link. The scholars focus has been independently in improving the “extended agent theory”, the concepts of “ecosystem” or “ecosystem of innovation”. Second, if we want (...) to understand the wide scope of the decentered ethics in design of mobile robots and AI these two theoretical frames cannot be seen separately but in join interdependency. Valdés’s work is abstract and speaks in part to earlier traditions including cubist art, even as it transports us most pointedly to his native Cuba, and to a series of what he describes as “visual enigmas” emerging specifically from contemporary realities. Both his public sculptures and installations restructure the space around them: on the one hand quoting a longer tradition of work, including the geometrical cubes of classic modern sculpture, while on the other hand moving beyond that history and (...) transporting earlier twentieth-century ideas about materiality and spatial abstraction in late modern global cultural and ecological forms and in sites not previously considered. L’ouvrage codirigé par Antoine Garapon et Pierre Servan-Schreiber vise à illustrer un changement de « paradigme » opéré au cours des dernières années dans la régulation des affaires internationales.En effet, traditionnellement, l’activité des entreprises multinationales est organisée selon le droit de l’Etat de leur siège social, et éventuellement selon le(s) droit(s) des Etats au sein desquels elles poursuivent leur activité. Par exemple, dans l’affaire Siemens, chaque acte illicite pouvait ainsi être soumis à trois droits nationaux (p. 10). Par conséquent, l’organisation (...) d’institutions complexes comme les entreprises multinationales dont le siège, les actionnaires et l’activité marchande sont généralement situés dans des Etats distincts a ouvert à ces dernières des possibilités inégalées de contournement des lois étatiques. The paper contains a conceptual analysis of “act of toleration” and the property of “being tolerant”. Being tolerant is understood as a dispositional property of persons manifested in what the author calls the “circumstances of toleration”. The main circumstances distinguished are: a tendency to prohibit a certain behaviour and the competence to determine the deontic status of the behaviour in question. An act of toleration, then, consists in not prohibiting (or cancelling the prohibition of) that behaviour. It is argued that (...) this requires the existence of two different normative systems, the “basic system”, and the “justifying system”. Acts of toleration must be based on reasons coming from the latter. This insight enables one to establish a difference between reasonable and unreasonable toleration, as well as between toleration and related concepts like indifference, acquiescence, etc. The analysis also introduces the distinction between “vertical” and “horizontal” toleration. Acceptance of this last category implies that toleration does not necessarily require hierarchical relationships between those who tolerate and those whose actions are tolerated. (shrink)
