During the course of its short history the discipline concerned with the origin of life has given birth to several scientific programmes in the Lakatosian sense, two of the most prominent and widespread being those initiated by Oparin (life began from protein entities) and Muller-Haldane (life began from genetic entities). The present paper sets down the bases for the rational reconstruction of both views by identifying their hard core and some of their successive developments. An assessment is made (...) of the various stages in the evolution of these programmes with respect to the crucial Lakatosian notions of progressivity and regressivity and of how their arguments stand up against one another. This epistemological analysis also establishes the internal reasons why the RNA version of the genotype programme (developed in particular by L. Orgel and S. Spiegelman) has today taken on a progressive character and enjoys recognition by the international scientific community. (shrink)

Müller (ed.), Fundamental Issues of Artificial Intelligence (Synthese Library 377; Berlin: Springer).] - - - In some quarters, there is intense concern about high–level machine intelligence and superintelligent AI coming up in a few dec- ades, bringing with it significant risks for human- ity; in other quarters, these issues are ignored or considered science (...) fiction. We wanted to clarify what the distribution of opinions actually is, what probability the best experts currently assign to high–level machine intelligence coming up within a particular time–frame, which risks they see with that development and how fast they see these developing. We thus designed a brief questionnaire and distributed it to four groups of experts. Overall, the results show an agreement among experts that AI systems will probably reach overall human ability around 2040-2050 and move on to superintelligence in less than 30 years thereafter. The experts say the probability is about one in three that this development turns out to be ‘bad’ or ‘extremely bad’ for humanity. (shrink)

Die Jahrestagung 2018 der Arbeitsgemeinschaft deutschsprachiger Philosophiedozentinnen und -dozenten im Studium der Katholischen Theologie an wissenschaftlichen Hochschulen fand vom 20.-22. Februar 2018 in der Katholischen Akademie Schwerte statt. Die Fachtagung stand unter dem Thema "Welt - Geist - Gott. Erkundungen zu Panpsychismus und Panentheismus" und widmete sich der Frage, wie sich das Gott-Welt-Verhaltnis religionsphilosophisch und unter Berucksichtigung der heutigen naturwissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse adaquat bestimmen lasst. Der Fokus lag dabei auf zwei alternativen Gottes- und Geistkonzeptionen: Panentheismus und Panpsychismus. Beide Forschungsprogramme wurden intensiv (...) diskutiert und auf ihr jeweiliges philosophisches und theologisches Potential hin befragt, das Verhaltnis von Gott und Welt sowie Geist und Materie auf eine Art und Weise zu denken, die jenseits des bekannten Dualismus von Gott und Welt auf der einen Seite und Geist und Materie auf der anderen Seite liegt. Default logic is one of the most popular and successful formalisms for non-monotonic reasoning. In 2002, Bonatti and Olivetti introduced several sequent calculi for credulous and skeptical reasoning in propositional default logic. In this paper we examine these calculi from a proof-complexity perspective. In particular, we show that the calculus for credulous reasoning obeys almost the same bounds on the proof size as Gentzen’s system LK. Hence proving lower bounds for credulous reasoning will be as hard as proving lower bounds (...) for LK. On the other hand, we show an exponential lower bound to the proof size in Bonatti and Olivetti’s enhanced calculus for skeptical default reasoning. (shrink)

Publication du matériel amphorique recueilli dans le remblai au moyen duquel on a comblé vers 330 le puits monumental de la place au Nord-Est du Passage des Théores. Exceptés de rares fragments du ve siècle, l'ensemble du matériel date du ive siècle. On a dénombré près de 1500 amphores, dont 82 % sont d'origine thasienne, avec une nette prédominance de l'amphore biconique par rapport à l'amphore «en toupie». Les amphores importées viennent surtout de Grèce de l'Est (Chios et Samos) et (...) de Grèce du Nord (Mendè essentiellement), et, à un degré moindre, de la Mer Noire (Sinope notamment). (shrink)

We consider scenarios where a group of agents wish to simplify a given abstract argumentation framework—specifying a set of arguments and the attacks between them—by eliminating cycles in the attack-relation on the basis of their preferences over arguments. They do so by first aggregating their individual preferences into a collective preference order and then removing any attacks involved in a cycle that go against that order. Our analysis integrates insights from formal argumentation and social choice theory. We obtain sweeping impossibility (...) results for essentially all standard methods of preference aggregation, showing that no Condorcet method and no positional scoring rule can uphold the fundamental principle expressing that views held by every single member of the group must be respected. But we also find that so-called representative-agent rules do offer this guarantee. (shrink)

Seit dem antisemitischen Massaker am 7. Oktober 2023 durch die Hamas in Israel ist der Judenhass weltweit so sichtbar wie lang nicht mehr. Die Gewalt und der Wille zur Vernichtung äußern sich gegen Juden als Juden, projiziert auf Israel. Eine Auseinandersetzung, eine Kritik an antisemitischen Ressentiments, ihrer inhärenten Gewalt- und Vernichtungsbereitschaft, wird überlagert durch Legitimierungen, die die Grenzen der sozialen Ächtung des Antisemitismus neu verhandeln. Die individuellen und gesellschaftlichen Vorbehalte gegenüber einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Antisemitismus sind enorm. Dieser Artikel erinnert (...) an die Kritische Theorie Theodor W. Adornos und Max Horkheimers, die im antisemitischen Ressentiment die Grenzen der Aufklärung beschrieben haben. Der Jahrtausende lang kultivierte Hass auf »die Juden« speist sich aus Projektionen und Rationalisierungen, die heute an Israel geheftet werden. Die Kontinuität des Antisemitismus verweist darauf, dass der antisemitische Hass und die Gewalt gesellschaftlich immer noch systematisch unterschätzt werden. Ein blinder Fleck kann den kursierenden Rationalisierungen und Legitimierungen entnommen werden, die die Ursache des Antisemitismus bei Juden oder bei Israel selbst suchen. (shrink)
