The first book of Ovid's ‘Tristia’, apparently written by Ovid on his way into exile, contains several descriptions of a sea-storm. Two elegies dealing exclusively with the topic (Trist. 1.2 and 1.4) are located remarkably close to one another. Both sea-storms have convincingly been interpreted as reflections of the turmoil of the exile's life. But various explanations have been put forward to explain the doublet and its position in book 1. This article argues that elegies 1.2 and 1.4 contain most (...) elements of an epic “sea storm”, except for the loss of one or more of the protagonist’s companions. The loss of the “companions” on the other hand, is a central topic in Trist. 1.3, which describes the exile’s last night in Rome. The frame provided by the two descriptions allows the storm and the farewell to Rome to function as a single unit, thus stressing its character as a reflection of the speaker’s tempestuous life. The article goes on to compare the reception of the poems by Hildebert of Lavardin (carm. min. 22) and explains some of its similarities and differences. (shrink)

Cet article comprend l’étude et l’édition du Versus de historia euangelica, un poème anonyme de 288 hexamètres léonins, qui relate l’histoire de la naissance du Christ, de son ministère et de sa crucifixion. En raison de la nature contradictoire et répétitive des récits évangéliques, le poète suit l’organisation du matériel biblique de l’ Historia scholastica de Pierre le Mangeur, dont l’achèvement en 1173 constitue le terminus post quem de la composition du poème. On peut appeler le style du Versus épigrammatique. (...) En fait, le poème dans son entier se lit comme une collection de brefs tituli indépendants qui pourraient être sortis de leur contexte et utilisés comme légendes pour des représentations figuratives appropriées. This paper is mainly concerned with tense in embedded constructions. I believe that recent research – notably the work by Ogihara (1989) and Abusch (1993) – has contributed much to our better understanding of its semantics. The proposals made by the two authors are, however, still too simplistic in some regards. Among other things, they neglect the interplay of tense with temporal adverbs of quantification and with frame-setters. To get this composition right is a touchstone for every theory of tense (...) and tense semanticists have been concerned with this problem from the beginning on, as witnessed by the analyses in Kratzer (1978), Bäuerle (1979), Dowty (1979/1982), to mention a few.
