It was to correct common misconceptions about his thought that Jean-Paul Sartre, the most dominent European intellectual of the post-World War II decades, accepted an invitation to speak on October 29, 1945, at the Club Maintenant in Paris. The unstated objective of his lecture (“Existentialism Is a Humanism”) was to expound his philosophy as a form of “existentialism,” a term much bandied about at the time. Sartre asserted that existentialism was essentially a doctrine for philosophers, though, ironically, he (...) was about to make it accessible to a general audience. The published text of his lecture quickly became one of the bibles of existentialism and made Sartre an international celebrity. The idea of freedom occupies the center of Sartre’s doctrine. Man, born into an empty, godless universe, is nothing to begin with. He creates his essence—his self, his being—through the choices he freely makes (“existence precedes essence”). Were it not for the contingency of his death, he would never end. Choosing to be this or that is to affirm the value of what we choose. In choosing, therefore, we commit not only ourselves but all of mankind. The Transcendence of the Ego may be regarded as a turning-point in the philosophical development of Jean-Paul Sartre. Prior to the writing of this essay, published in France in 1937, Sartre had been intimately acquainted with the phenomenological movement which originated in Germany with Edmund Husserl. It is a fundamental tenet of Husserl, the notion of a transcendent ego, which is here attacked by Sartre. Deeper still than that of the _differend_, we find in Lyotard the concept of _discrepancy_, which underlines the welcome alterity in the encounter with others. We propose an understanding of Ricœurian anthropology based on this idea, when it is associated with another concept, that of _ergodicity_, which makes it possible to think the same in the discrepancy. We illustrate it with the trial and the act of judging. We then show that the Ricœurian process of putting rival thoughts into dialogue (...) stems from this anthropology, and that Ricœur presents full coherence. For this, another concept is introduced which describes the mechanism of understanding always restarted, in the sense that each new thought must be able to be encompassed in the gaze cast on the world. _Encompassing_ is a concept in modelling disciplines, which is difficult to translate into French. To illustrate this, we take as an example Ricœur’s “debate” with Jakobson in _The Rule of Metaphor_. (shrink)

Philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre counted among his friends and associates some of the most esteemed intellectuals, writers, and artists of the twentieth century. In Portraits, Sartre collected his impressions and accounts of many of his notable acquaintances, in addition to some of his most important writings on art and literature during the early 1950s. Portraits includes Sartre's preface to Nathalie Sarraute's Portrait of a Man Unknown and his homages to André Gide, Albert Camus, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The essay on (...) Merleau-Ponty casts considerable light on the recent history of French philosophy, particularly with regard to dominant post-war political conceptions. Featured as well are lengthy studies of Sartre's close friend Paul Nizan and of the young André Gorz that are no less revealing, as well as Sartre's "Reply to Albert Camus," which sealed the ideological and personal break between the two writers on its publication in 1952. Este artículo aborda la reciente actualización de la propuesta filosófica general de Badiou a partir del planteamiento específico de una “estrategia especulativa” en el reciente libro La inmanencia de las verdades. Sostengo la hipótesis de que la idea de una “estrategia especulativa” es un tercer estadio en el proyecto de Badiou denominado “filosofía del acontecimiento”, que cumple y radicaliza los anteriores estadios de “platonismo de lo múltiple” y “comunismo de la Idea”, cuya continuidad descansa en la unidad interna de su (...) proyecto a partir de la ligazón entre su apuesta ontológica y meta-ontológica como filosofía necesariamente sistemática. En primer lugar, mostraré los elementos generales de la filosofía de Badiou explicitando sus etapas y la emergencia de lo que denominaré “filosofía del acontecimiento y del ser múltiple”. En segundo lugar, profundizaré específicamente a partir de la convergencia de la tesis ontológica y meta-ontológica, para caracterizar la apuesta del autor como proyecto sistemático desligado de la ontoteología mediante el recurso especulativo a la matemática para pensar la infinitud. A partir de esto, finalmente, sostendré que la “estrategia” de la obra reciente del autor implica, en términos generales, una especificación del rol de la matemática dentro de su ontología especulativa.
