Objective: Loneliness is the subjective distress of feeling alone and has a strong impact on wellbeing and health. In addition to well-known predictors like isolation and poor health, a better understanding of the psychological determinants of loneliness would offer effective targets for future complementary interventions.Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, we compared the explanatory power of several important risk factors of loneliness with the affective, motivational, and cognitive aspects of the Meaning in Life construct. Different nested linear models were compared (...) including socio-demographic, lifestyles, social-connectedness, and self-rated health variables, to assess the overlapping and non-overlapping explanatory power of each of them.Results: Health status and MiL were found to be the most important predictors of loneliness, followed by social connectedness and, with a much lower weight, lifestyles, and socio-demographic factors. Within the MiL factor, the most cognitive component, sense of coherence, had a greater explanatory power than the more affective and motivational ones.Conclusion: Reduced MiL, the capacity of an individual to attach “value and significance” to life, is a crucial predictor to the feeling of loneliness. These results suggest that programs aiming to combat loneliness should go well beyond situational interventions and include more cognitive, value-centered interventions that enable individuals to define and pursue a meaningful vital plan. En la ética han sido postuladas un conjunto de teorías con las que se ha buscado reflexionar en relación a los aspectos implicados en la moralidad humana expresada en comportamientos y acciones de las personas. También han sido propuestas con el objetivo de ofrecer respuestas a una pregunta importante ¿En qué consiste una acción correcta y desde qué criterios podría considerarse como tal? Estas teorías se ubican en lo conceptualizado como éticas normativas.En el último capítulo nos ocuparemos en desarrollar nuestra (...) propuesta de una ética civil basada en virtudes públicas. Comenzaremos explicando por qué es necesario que en la actualidad sea postulado un catálogo de virtudes públicas. También hablaremos, un poco, de lo que consiste he implica una ética cívica. Posteriormente abordaremos las virtudes públicas que Victoria Campos considera como necesarias y por ende debieran formar parte del carácter del actual ciudadano democrático. Luego aportaremos una pequeña descripción de cada una, puesto que la autora no abordó de manera suficiente cada virtud. Terminaremos reflexionando sobre si sería viable proponer una ética civil basada en virtudes públicas. Lo haremos refiriendo los aspectos que a nuestro juicio debe contemplar la propuesta citada para lograr que pueda ser planteada y difundida con resultados satisfactorios. (shrink)

Background Prison creates philosophical needs due to the exceptionality of the situation. This study explores how philosophy can meet these needs by focusing on three aspects: critical thinking, personal relationships and the government of passions. It builds on similar interventions in several countries and is proposed as a research that bypasses some limitations of previous projects in prisons.Method Following the participation of 81 inmates in 22 philosophical sessions over six months, the results of both interventions were analyzed using mixed methods, (...) as well as a pretest posttest design with a control group. Specifically, Webster’s Self Assessed Wisdom Scale, a questionnaire and an interview with four participants were used. These methods were triangulated in order to obtain data from the various methodologies and to improve the validity and reliability of the results.Results It was demonstrated that the experimental group showed significant progress in relation to the categories “openness”, “humor” and “emotion regulation”. Participants also showed a progression in categories related to the project’s goals. These results allow for a description of the categories that explain in what sense philosophy can act in the context of imprisonment.Conclusions This study demonstrates, on the one hand, how philosophy workshops involve outcomes linked to cognitive, affective and relational aspects. Furthermore, it provides evidence to confirm previous studies and interventions that are more modest in their results and use less rigorous scientific methodologies. (shrink)

Los procedimientos para realizar dicho proceso son fundamentales en la estrategia definida por el país que incluye la "Guía cubana de migración al software libre", sin embargo, su aplicación práctica enfrenta dificultades que han motivado a los autores a la elaboración de una estrategia específica para la migración al software libre en el sector de la (...) Salud Pública de la provincia de Camagüey, Cuba. En esta estrategia se proponen las acciones concretas, los programas docentes que permitirán la recalificación del capital humano y las acciones que posibiliten garantizar la sostenibilidad de la migración al concluir el proceso. In the present Cuban and world scenarios the migration to free software constitutes a need for the development to guarantee technological independence. The procedures to carry out that process are vital in the strategy defined by the country that includes “Cuban guidelines for the migration to free software” however its practical implementation is facing difficulties that have motivated the authors to elaborate a specific strategy form the migration to free software in the Public health sector in the province of Camagüey, Cuba. In this strategy actions are suggested, like teaching programs that will allow the recertification of the capital human resources and steps that will make possible to guarantee the sustainability of the migration at the end of the process. The importance of the collective management of immaterial resources is a key variable in the valorisation of products in a post-industrial economy. The purpose of this paper is to analyse how, in post-industrial economies, it is possible to devise alternative forms of mediation between producers and consumers, such as organic farmers' markets, to curb the appropriation of rent by transnational and/or local business elites from the value created by immaterial resources. More specifically, we analyse those aspects of the collective management (...) of ethical values that, in the case of organic farmers' markets, can be a strategic source of competitive advantage for local producers. In the recent literature on confirmation there are two leading approaches to the provision of a probabilistic measure of the degree to which a hypothesis is confirmed by evidence. The first is to construe the degree to which evidence E confirms hypothesis H as a function that is directly proportional to p and inversely proportional to p . I shall refer to this as the probability approach. The second approach construes the notion as a function that is directly proportional to (...) the true-positive rate – the probability of the evidence if the hypothesis is true, p – and inversely proportional to the false-positive rate – the probability of the evidence if the hypothesis is false, p . The author challenges the view that birth cannot be a morally relevant fact in the process of development from zygote to child. He reviews specific arguments against giving any moral significance to the fact of birth. Drawing on recent work in developmental psychology, he contends that the lives of neonates can have a level of self-consciousness that confers moral significance but can only be possessed after birth. He shows that the position he has argued for provides a framework within which (...) the move from the moral validity of aborting sentient fetuses to the moral validity of infanticide might be resisted. He concludes that arguments suggesting that birth can be morally significant support the view that the acquisition of moral significance is a gradual and multilayered phenomenon. (shrink)

A partir de una extensa revisión de las referencias científico-técnicas esenciales y relevantes sobre la génesis y las implicaciones de la actual crisis ecosocial, en este artículo desarrollamos una descripción transdisciplinar y sintética del estado de la cuestión sobre la crisis de sostenibilidad. Para ello, tras la introducción y somera descripción del marco sociopolítico institucional desde el que se ha tratado de gestionar la integración del crecimiento económico con la sostenibilidad, en primer lugar examinamos los principales costes, en términos energéticos, (...) ecosistémicos y climáticos, acarreados hasta la actualidad por el paradigma dominante de crecimiento económico, para, a continuación, revisar los principales límites tecnológicos que desde la ciencia y la técnica se vislumbran a la continuidad de dicho paradigma dominante de crecimiento económico continuo. La revisión del ingente cúmulo de evidencia científico-técnica nos lleva, finalmente, a concluir sobre la incompatibilidad del paradigma socioeconómico dominante, basado en el crecimiento continuo, con toda forma de sostenibilidad ecológica, y sobre la necesidad de un profundo y radical replanteamiento de dicho paradigma socioeconómico dominante como la más lógica y mejor vía, si no ya la única, para afrontar los magníficos retos a los que como civilización se enfrenta la Humanidad. This paper deals with the question of the conflict of constitutional rights with regard to basic rights. Two extreme accounts are outlined: the subsumptive approach and the particularistic approach, that embody two main conceptions of practical rationality. Between the two approaches there is room for a range of options, two of which are examined: the proportionalist approach, which conserves the scope of rights restricting their stringency, and the specificationist approach, which preserves the stringency of rights restricting their scope. En esta nota discutimos una forma generaldel Teorema de Deducción (TD) para sistemas modales de primer orden, la cual permite derivar varias otras formulaciones del mismoque aparecen en la literatura, así como su relación con la Fórmula de Barcan.

En la búsqueda de una ética para nuestro tiempo, el autor acude a la obra de Adorno para examinar la relación dialéctica entre praxis y teoría, y afirma que el nuevo concepto de praxis que emerge de esta relación podría guiarnos en la construcción de una ética más crítica que la mayoría de morales, constituidas únicamente por un sistema de normas. El autor defiende la concepción adorniana sobre el lugar del sujeto en la sociedad, que pretende despertar en este sujeto (...) la conciencia de sus capacidades, pero también de sus límites y sobre todo de su falta de libertad; lo que permite a Adorno conceder validez al intento de vida justa del sujeto moderno sólo en su problematicidad y fragilidad. A leitura de um ensaio de Elias Canetti sobre Tolstói me suscitou a seguinte imagem: a alma humana é como o leito de um rio em que as pedras definem seu curso singular. Esta imagem serve como chave de leitura da trajetória do personagem Anton, no romance Anton Reiser. O texto procura identificar essas marcas, salientado que a exclusão tem papel fundamental na formação de sua personalidade.

Trata-se de pensar o riso (enquanto expressão da hilaritas) como uma possível maneira de operar a emendatio espinosana, no sentido de dispor o corpo e a mente, por um treino e instrução propiciados a partir de uma articulação de afetos alegres, ao fortalecimento e manutenção crescentes de sua potência de agir. No entanto, por que escolhemos o riso, aparentemente uma manifestação mais física da hilaridade, como o ponto privilegiado de análise? Tal escolha se justifica através da interpretação fornecida por Henri (...) Bergson em seus ensaios sobre o cômico. Enquanto censura satírica e ato de correção, o riso observado pelo filósofo francês contemporâneo visa restaurar a espontaneidade dos sujeitos alijados da duração e da intuição do mundo. Recuperar essa criatividade intuitiva de princípio – que se correlaciona com o conceito espinosano de felicidade, escopo do Tratado da Emenda do Intelecto, mas que se cumpre efetivamente na Ética – é o objetivo de nosso estudo. The epistemic status of Natural Selection has seemed intriguing to biologists and philosophers since the very beginning of the theory to our present times. One prominent contemporary example is Elliott Sober, who claims that NS, and some other theories in biology, and maybe in economics, are peculiar in including explanatory models/conditionals that are a priori in a sense in which explanatory models/conditionals in Classical Mechanics and most other standard theories are not. Sober’s argument focuses on some “would promote” sentences that (...) according to him, play a central role in NS explanations and are both causal and a priori. Lange and Rosenberg criticize Sober arguing that, though there may be some unspecific a priori causal claims, there are not a priori causal claims that specify particular causal factors. Although we basically agree with Lange and Rosenberg’s criticism, we think it remains silent about a second important element in Sober’s dialectics, namely his claim that, contrary to what happens in mechanics, in NS explanatory conditionals are a priori, and that this is so in quite specific explanatory models. In this paper we criticize this second element of Sober’s argument by analyzing what we take to be the four possible interpretations of Sober’s claim, and argue that, terminological preferences aside, the possible senses in which explanatory models in NS can qualify, or include elements that can qualify, as a priori, also apply to CM and other standard, highly unified theories. We conclude that this second claim is unsound, or at least that more needs to be said in order to sustain that NS explanatory models are a priori in a sense in which CM models are not. (shrink)

Dummett’s Manifestation Argument against realism attempts to show that a realist conception of meaning cannot explain the understanding of truth-conditions transcendent to evidence. In this work the general structure of the argument is discussed along with several objections to it. This examination finds that the anti-realist is committed to a deflationary conception of the normative character of meaning that is unpalatable. The paper focuses on Reinhardt Grossmann's analysis of the Argument from Physics, as well as the analysis by the Spanish philosopher Antonio Millán-Puelles, in an attempt to assess the validity of the Argument on the basis of their respective critical views. Both authors agree in perceptual realism and in the need to distinguish between the scope and object of Physics and the ordinary objects of natural perception. Their criticisms mainly concern the innappropiate use of the principle of reduction in the (...) Argument and the distinction between secondary and primary qualities, which is, according to Grossmann, one of the sources of idealism and phenomenalism. (shrink)

O artigo inicia com o enfoque do absolutismo hobbesiano à luz da doutrina tradicional do direito natural. A seguir expõe a complexa relaçáo de Hobbes com a democracia e a noçáo hobbesiana de representaçáo política. Depois de reconstruir algumas das objeções básicas de Hobbes ao pensamento político clássico, o texto procura mostrar que o filósofo inglês opera, em relaçáo a Aristóteles, com um conceito relativamente inalterado de natureza.
