This paper explores Arendt’s and Foucault’s thinking through the lens of the modern labor paradigm. Even if the question of labor is a less prominent path in both thinkers’ research, it leads to the heart of the modern era as they both understand it. In their respective fields, Arendt and Foucault sketch a similar link between the beginning of the modern age and the transformation of the notion of labor. While Arendt directly examines the modern glorification of labor and the (...) emergence of the labor society, Foucault provides numerous analyses of labor as an instrument and target of disciplinary society, along with an epistemic distinction of modernity deeply connected to the term, ‘labor.’ This joint reading contributes to what might be called their philosophies of labor, as well as to the ongoing debate about the nature and meaning of labor in contemporary society. The pandemic and subsequent wave of lockdowns in many countries led to a massive increase in TikTok users globally, boosting the platform’s public significance. Even if TikTok’s political potential is already established, the platform still lacks a theoretical underpinning as a space for action. Using both a political-philosophical as well as a techno-philosophical perspective, I seek to discuss and substantiate TikTok’s potential as a public realm that enables political action. Due to the unique algorithmic logic of this app, I argue (...) that users are acting-with the algorithm when engaging in political action from home: be it in the form of national political protest or international acts of care and empowerment. Remiantis prancūzų sociologo Pierre Bourdieu sociologine teorija, laukas ir habitus sąvokomis, straipsnyje sociologiniu požiūriu analizuojama judėjimo negalios paliesta paauglystė, paauglio habitus formavimasis šeimos socialiniame lauke.Judėjimo negalios apsunkintas kūnas ne tik riboja judėjimo negalią turinčių paauglių fizinę laisvę, bet ir turi reikšmingos įtakos paauglio socializacijos procesui šeimoje bei šeimos narių tarpusavio santykiams. Judėjimo negalią turintys paaugliai dažnai dėl savo negalios ribojamų fizinių galimybių laikomi silpnesniais. Jais stengiasi pasirūpinti tėvai, globėjai ar kiti sveiki šeimos nariai. Negalią turintys paaugliai dažniau nei suaugusieji yra (...) veikiami aktyvios neigimo psichologijos, kai akcentuojama, kad jis negali, nemoka, nesugeba. Tai lemia jo savistigmatizaciją, trukdančią atskleisti, įvertinti bei realizuoti savo turimas realias galimybes. Paauglio negalia kelia daugybę iššūkių visai šeimai. Ji paveikia ne tik šeimos sistemos schemą, bet tėvo ir motinos kaip poros egzistenciją. Užmirštami bendri poros ir asmeniniai siekiai, koncentruojamasi tik į vaiko negalią, globos ir pagalbos teikimą jam. Paauglio negalia turi įtakos ne tik jo, bet ir šeimoje augančių sveikų vaikų socializacijos procesui. Kai tėvai, giminaičiai daugiau dėmesio skiria negalią turinčiam paaugliui, kiti (sveiki) vaikai dažniau jaučiasi atstumti, mažiau mylimi.Patirtas judėjimo neįgalumas itin paveikia paauglio socializaciją. Jei socializacijos pradžioje įgimtas neįgalumas vaiko suvokiamas kaip savaime suprantamas, tai vėliau, išėjus už šeimos lauko ribų, susiduriama su neįgalumo stigmatizacija, ir trauma ar liga drastiškai nutraukia socializacijos procesą. Ypač skausmingas pokytis, nubraukiantis besikaupiančią gyvenimišką patirtį, įvyksta patyrus negalią paauglystėje, kai skyla habitus. (shrink)

We test the hypothesis that demographic continuity was a necessary condition of performable token post-communist social restorations. Demographic continuity means sufficient overlapping between populations of original and restored systems. Token social restoration refers to restorations where original and restored systems are identical. It is opposed to type restoration where original and restored systems are numerically different instances of the same type. The identity of original and restored systems in token restorations is achieved by performing various practices in the restored system (...) to establish institutional continuity with the original system. The restitution of property rights is the most important of them in the post-communist restorations. So our hypothesis claims that these practices cannot be performed without sufficient demographic continuity. We abstract the demographic continuity thresholds by measuring shares of survivors from the precommunist times in the population of Baltic countries by 1990. Our data confirm the hypothesis as in none of post-communist countries with demographic continuity below these thresholds there was property rights restitution. (shrink)

Sociologinis tyrimas atliktas reabilitacinėje ir gydymo įstaigose, kur gydomi įvairias negalias, tarp jų ir judėjimo, turintys paaugliai. Tyrimas tranguliacinio pobūdžio. Jam atlikti buvo naudojami keli tyrimo metodai: pusiau struktūruoti interviu, stebėjimas dalyvaujant. Remtasi P. Bourdieu kapitalo teorija, lauko ir habitus sampratomis. Šis kokybinis tyrimas – tai judėjimo negalią turinčių paauglių, socializacijos patirčių gydymo ir reabilitacinėse įstaigose, socialinio vaizdinio atspindys.

This article contributes to the literature on legitimacy by highlighting its paradox and constraints. While an optimal level of legitimacy-seeking behaviours may be necessary for organizational effectiveness, an excessive focus on legitimacy may lead to stakeholder mismanagement and have the opposite effect. These insights emerged from a longitudinal qualitative study of large-scale changes in public-sector health care in a Canadian province (1994-2002). In 1994, subordinate health care organizations underwent government-driven reforms to promote market-based logics of efficiency and cost reduction. Initial (...) years post reforms were characterized by a singular focus on government-driven priorities and inattention to other stakeholders. However, instead of giving benefits of legitimacy, these behaviours led to anger and activism from non-institutional stakeholders such as staff and community due to a decline in quality and patient satisfaction. Eventually, greater attention to stakeholder concerns ended the stand-off. These findings also elaborate Suchman's (Academy of Management Review 20(3), 571-610, 1995) framework on legitimacy and explain that legitimacy may occur for reasons other than institutionalization of values and be temporary in nature. In the twenty-first century, human rights play a very important role in modern society. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, released on 10 December 1948th was thought to become an everlasting source of fundamental human rights and freedoms. The Declaration corresponds to the situation that global community was facing 60 years ago. Today it is a collection of articles that is the cornerstone of the whole system of human rights protection. However, gross human rights atrocities, the dynamic process of legislation, (...) technological progress and changing social values have prompted many to revise the concept of human rights. Today many areas of life have changed: we have untraditional marriages and families, the individual enjoys a completely different social status than 60 years ago. These factors have prompted the creation of an entirely new dimension to human rights and freedoms based on personal autonomy, dynamics and self-regulation. Nowadays, the realization of rights and the aspiration to personal happiness are closely connected with personal autonomy. Autos and nomos—these two terms describe the ability of an individual to initiate one’s actions, to realize them by making independent decisions. This article analyzes whether this ability is a natural right or a privilege, what factors determine the exercise of this right, and what is the role of the state in this process. (shrink)
