This delightful mosaic in book form employs personal stories from the author, poignant cultural references, engaging (and nobly challenging) practices, and the author's charismatic voice to promote personal, communal, and environmental justice.

In this paper we will show how Qurashī patrilines and marriage records can be statistically analysed to generate an estimate of the tribe’s size at the time of Muḥammad. By extension this will also give us an estimate for the population size of Mecca. We will begin by using the marriage data preserved in a genealogical work to identify a cohort of adult Qurashī male contemporaries of Muḥammad. We will then divide this cohort into men who had brothers versus those (...) who did not. It will be shown that this ratio is exactly what we would expect if we were modelling a complete population and therefore it cannot be a sample. With this in place we can extrapolate the number of women and dependants that would have been linked to each man, giving us an estimate of the tribe’s size in the period. Supplementing this with selected historiographical data will give us the population size of Mecca. The resulting findings raise a series of questions concerning Qurashī origins that will then be addressed by applying a similar methodology to the eras before Muḥammad’s. This will illuminate the manner and timing of the emergence of the Quraysh as a distinct entity. (shrink)

يغتر بنو آدم بما يسوقه الله إليهم من حلمٍ وعفو عن سوء صنيعهم وجُرم ما اقترفت أيديهم...يغترون بحلم الله...يغرهم جهلهم..ويدفعهم طيشهم إلى إعلان الحرب على الوجود كله حتى على الله ذاته، وجهوا إلى إرادته سبحانه سهام حرابهم، وسوء مكرهم..ولعنات خداعهم..قتلوا الإنسان صنع الله...حاربوا الله باسم الله...أضاعوا الدين..كل الدين باسم الدين...قتلوا العدل فى محرابه عاكفًا يصلى لربه باسم العدالة..هتكوا عرض الإنسانية ثم جلسوا يمصون دمائها بأيديهم الآثمة..ويكأنهم لم يقدموا لها سوءًا..ويكأنهم بقتلها أحسنوا إليها صنيعًا.. يالسوء ماقدمت الإنسانية لبنى الإنسان، يالسوء ما (...) خلفوا ربهم بعد ميثاقه الأول والأشهر، فكانوا النموذج الأسوأ للخلافة، والصورة المضادة تمامًا لطبيعة المستخلف وجوهر إرادته، فما تركوا حرابًا ولا ظلمًا ولا إثمًا إلا اقترفوه، وما تركوا جراحًا ملتاثة بلعينهم إلا وأوسعوها جرحًا وأوغروها نزقًا وأعمقوها حزنًا فكانت تلك هى مكتسباتهم ، فى حين كانت إرادة السماء رحمات الأرض وأمنها وسلامها...ولكنهم..ويالذل ما قدموا للإنسانية، أجهزوا عليها صريعة، فطالت سهام قتلهم وحرابهم السماء ذاتها، تلك التى امتدت إليهم بحنوها وعطفها، فلم تسلم من ثورتهم وقتلهم وظلماتهم، فكانوا بحق هم الثائرون ضد الله... عجيب أمر الفقهاء..وعجيب أولئك الذين أطلقوا على أنفسهم رجال الدين..ضلوا الطريق إلى الله وأضلوا، سرقوا الله من جوهر مكنونه وعظمة أسراره، جردوه من أسراره القدسية، نزعوا عنه سيم الألوهية، صوروه على أنه قاطع طريق، أو فى أحسن الأحوال رب ديوث!!! لا يغار على عرضه!! ولا يأبه لعياله..ولا يهتم لمن أوكل إليهم الخلافة، بل جردوه عن كل شىء...عن الربوبية والألوهية والتقديس. قدموا صورة مغلوطة تنافى الله وتضاده، ولكنها ياللأسف.. ماقُدمت إلا باسم الله، قدموا أنفسهم على أنهم حماة الشريعة، فإذ فجأة نجد (...) ألا شريعة لديهم ولا عقيدة ولا دين!! هى محض قشور قشرية لا لب لها ولا مضمون، قشريات جمعوها يُمنة ويُسرة، قدموها على أنها الدين..وصوروا أنفسهم الهداة المهديين، هم ملاك الحقيقة المطلقة، تلك المولود البغيض المشوه الذى لا وجه له ولا عينين، لا صورة له تشبه أبيه أو مصدره، الله رحمة ولكنهم أبوه إلا جلادًا...رحيمًا جعلوه جبارًا فى الأرض، مصلحًا صوروه ديوثًا...انقلبوا على الله واستبدلوه..ذهبوا ليدلوا الناس عليه فانقلبوا بدونه...هدموا جمهورية السلام والعدل والرحمة، وأقاموا على أنقاضها جمهورية القتل والسلب والسبى والهدر المتعمد لكرامة الإنسان، فلبئس ما استبدلوا به الله... ولبئس ما صوروا به ربًا ملك فعدل، وقدر فعفى، وحاسب فرحم، فكانت تلك الجمهورية مسخًا مشوهًا من جمهورية الله.... En este artículo se explora la relación entre el pensamiento político de Noam Chomsky y la teoría de la justicia de John Rawls, estableciendo un diálogo crítico entre ambas perspectivas para identificar áreas de convergencia y divergencia. El objetivo es analizar cómo las ideas de Chomsky en torno a la justicia, la democracia y la responsabilidad moral pueden contribuir a la reflexión sobre la teoría de Rawls. Aunque Chomsky es reconocido principalmente por su trabajo en lingüística y crítica social, su (...) obra también contiene una rica teoría política que sostiene que los poderosos utilizan la ideología para mantener su control sobre la sociedad. Por su parte, Rawls es reconocido por su teoría de la justicia como equidad, que se enfoca en la necesidad de organizar las sociedades de manera que todas las personas tengan una oportunidad justa de alcanzar sus objetivos. Academic integrity is one of the significant issues facing assessments in higher education. While there are a plethora of papers addressing this problem in certain locales, very little research has been published regarding tertiary institutions in the Caribbean. This paper satisfies this paucity in the literature and present findings which will help benchmark it against other comparable populations. This mixed-methods case study examines first-year students’ perceptions of plagiarism definitions, its seriousness, reasons for plagiarising, and its prevalence in a General Chemistry (...) lab course at a Jamaican university. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected and triangulated using a questionnaire and document analysis to understand the complexity of participants’ views. The results show that students largely define plagiarism as copying portions of text and not citing someone else’s work. While accepting that copying large and small portions of text are serious offences, students are less inclined to perceive copying a picture and self-plagiarism as problematic. Although students believe plagiarism is prevalent, they oppose harsh consequences, citing lack of understanding, course difficulty, time management issues, lack of motivation, and fear of failure as understandable reasons. Institutional recommendations to mitigate this growing concern include implementing strategies that would broaden students’ knowledge of what constitutes plagiarism, employing pedagogic strategies that aim to increase students’ self-efficacy, creating a more supportive academic environment, and reducing participation in plagiaristic behaviour. [Do Animals Have Consciousness?] The study analyses the arguments of contemporary philosophers of mind concerning the subject of animal consciousness. The first part reminds the reader of the Cartesian starting point of the contemporary discussion and points to the concept of phenomenal consciousness as the main point of contention concerning the instantiation of consciousness in non-human animals. The second part of the study analyses various forms of representationalism which make up the mainstream of contemporary debate. In the third part the (...) philosophy of mind of Daniel Dennett is discussed, together with its implications for the question of animal consciousness. In contrast with critics who treat Dennett’s theory as the result of conceptual confusions, the author argues that we should look upon the theory as the rejection of the assumptions of the mainstream and an attempt to think anew the question of consciousness, including animal consciousness. Eco-phenomenology is a young branch of contemporary phenomenology and environmental ethics that attempts to put aside all preconceptions burdening the relationship between humans and nature, to describe it purely on the basis of how it appears phenomenologically, and to draw ethical implications that could contribute to solving the ecological crisis. Authors inspired by Levinas’ ethics play an important role in this project, asking whether it could be extended to non-human beings. The article addresses two of them in particular: it shows (...) how Ch. Diehm – who sees the core of Levinas’ ethics in sensitivity to the suffering of the vulnerable body – succeeded in comparison to his predecessor S. Benso and her ethics of things, but also marks the limits of his attempt, thus indicating what remains a challenge for Levinas-inspired eco-phenomenology in the future. (shrink)
