Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer electronic payment system that operates as an independent currency. This paper is a philosophical investigation of the ontological constitution of Bitcoin. Using Slavoj Žižek’s ontological triad of the real, the symbolic and the imaginary, the paper distinguishes between three ideal typical theories of money: commodity theory, fiat theory, and credit theory. The constitution of Bitcoin is analysed by comparing the currency to each of these ideal types. It is argued that Bitcoin is commodity money without gold, (...) fiat money without a state, and credit money without debt. In conclusion, it is suggested that Bitcoin poses an ideological challenge to conventional forms of money in so far as it not only provokes sedimented beliefs about money but also exposes the forms of exploitation, risk and even violence inherent in the existing system of state authorized credit money. The paper is a contribution to current debates about conspiracy theories within philosophy and cultural studies. Wittgenstein’s understanding of language is invoked to analyse the epistemological effects of designating particular questions and explanations as a ‘conspiracy theory’. It is demonstrated how such a designation relegates these questions and explanations beyond the realm of meaningful discourse. In addition, Agamben’s concept of sovereignty is applied to explore the political effects of using the concept of conspiracy theory. The exceptional epistemological status assigned to (...) alleged conspiracy theories within our prevalent paradigms of knowledge and truth is compared to the exceptional legal status assigned to individuals accused of terrorism under the War on Terror. The paper concludes by discussing the relation between conspiracy theory and ‘the paranoid style’ in contemporary politics. (shrink)

Contemporary capitalism is caught in a dual crisis of economy and ecology. Central to both dimensions of this crisis is the issue of growth. On the one hand, capitalist economies must exhibit perpetual growth in order to function properly. On the other hand, the expansion of capitalist production and consumption ultimately interferes with the processes of natural growth that we find within the domain of ecology. Parallax of Growth explores the ideas of economy and ecology and the factors that have (...) put them on a collision course. Among other things, the book aims to explain why our current mode of economic organization seems to be inherently committed to perpetual growth. A key answer, argues Bjerg, is that contemporary capitalism is characterized by an inherent ′debt drive′, whereby the creation of money through the issuance of commercial bank credit has locked our economy in a vicious circle of forced growth and increasing debt. Parallax of Growth is not a catalogue of solutions to the ecological or the economic crisis. The book aims to shift the inquiry from ‘what shall we do?’ to ‘why have we not already done it?’ In order to address the challenges of our contemporary times of crisis, it is not enough to point out all the different reasons why perpetual economic growth is impossible and unsustainable. We need to understand how the idea of growth is deeply ingrained in the ideology as well as the organization of our society. In einer vor kurzem erschienenen Studie unternahm es Denis Feissel, sich in gründlicher Weise mit zwei Dokumenten zur Geschichte der Kirche der Byzakene (Byzacena) zur Zeit des Kaisers Iustinos II. auseinanderzusetzen: mit einer an den Erzbischof der Byzakene gerichteten sacra Iustinos' II. vom 1. Mai 568 und mit einer damit in einem bestimmten Zusammenhang stehenden „Beamtenurkunde“, aus der ein Teil der älteren Literatur auf eine auslösende kaiserliche iussio Iustinos' II. vom 5. Dezember 566 geschlossen hat. Von beiden Urkunden bietet Feissel (...) auf der Grundlage des einzigen heute noch greifbaren Textzeugen, des Cod. Lips. Univ. 3493–3494 („Codex Haenel“ bei Feissel), eine kritische Edition, durch die jetzt alle früheren Ausgaben überholt sind. (shrink)

Kierkegaards deiktische Theologie wird in einer Reihe von Textinterpretationen entwickelt, die seine oft übersehenen erbaulichen Reden in einem neuen Licht präsentieren. Das Buch setzt sich mit dem traditionellen Bild der Religiosität bei Kierkegaard auseinander, wie sie in den Begriffen der Religiosität A und B zum Ausdruck kommt, und bringt neue Argumente im Sinne einer deiktischen Theologie. Sie wird in einer doppelten Perspektive entfaltet: Der Mensch richtet seinen Blick auf Gott - und Gott begegnet ihm, indem er den Menschen auf seinen (...) Nächsten hinweist. Deiktische Theologie ist weder eine Schöpfungstheologie (Religiosität A) noch eine Offenbarungstheologie (Religiosität B), sondern sie erfasst die Spannung zwischen Schöpfung und Offenbarung, die u.a. im trinitarischen Gottesbegriff begründet wird. Die Entwicklung der deiktischen Theologie Kierkegaards geschieht in der Interpretation zentraler Texte aus den erbaulichen Reden, der Einübung im Christentum sowie der Unwissenschaftlichen Nachschrift. Wichtige Themen sind darüber hinaus: die Zeitlichkeit, das Verhältnis zwischen dem Humanen und dem Christlichen, die Reue, die Sünde, das Abendmahl, das Leiden, die Nachfolge Christi, Himmelfahrt und Auferstehung. This article explores the relationship between gambling and capitalism. The subjective being of the compulsive gambler provides insight into the role of money in capitalism. Using the Lacanian approach of Žižek, money is analysed as a sublime object of capitalist ideology. In gambling, however, the subject engages money in a very direct encounter with the Lacanian `Real', circumventing the ordinary symbolic order of capitalism. This results in a momentary de-sublimation of money, stripping it of the metaphysical properties otherwise vested in (...) it by capitalism. For the compulsive gambler, the de-sublimation has become permanent, making it impossible for him to function as an ordinary capitalist subject. He has come too close to money, leaving him in a pathological state of being out of joint with capitalism. (shrink)

Daß einer der zentralsten Texte, mit denen sich die Byzantinistik zu beschäftigen hat, das unter dem Namen des Kaisers Konstantinos VII. Porphyrogennetos laufende „Zeremonienbuch“, nicht nur von einem codex unicus, dem Cod. Lips. Univ. Rep. I 17 (gr. 28) (im folgenden: L), repräsentiert wird, sondern daß es daneben auch einen Überlieferungszweig in Palimpsesten gibt, ist der Wissenschaft seit geraumer Zeit bekannt: 1960 veröffentlichten Cyril Mango und Ihor Ševčenko eine erste Studie zu den von ihnen im Cod. Chalc. S. Trinitatis 133 (...) (125) aufgefundenen Palimpsestfragmenten (im folgenden: C), und in den siebziger Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts entdeckten bzw. identifizierten Wolfgang Waldstein und Otto Kresten weitere palimpsestierte Bruchstücke im Cod. Athous Vatop. 1003 (im folgenden: V) und stellten fest, daß die palimpsestierten Folien des Vatopedinus aus dem nämlichen „Muttercodex“ stammen, der auch bei der Anfertigung des Chalcensis palimpsestiert und ausgebeutet wurde. This article looks into the phenomena of irony and hope as well as their relation. The article starts out with an analysis of Richard Rorty’s understanding of private irony and social hope. Here, I argue the case that Rortarian irony is not primarily a matter of epistemic skepticism but instead an existential stance meant to deal appropriately with the idiosyncratic nature of one’s private projects. Moving on, the article focuses on Jonathan Lear’s depiction of two peculiar instances of two phenomena: (...) radical hope and ironic disruption. Whereas radical hope is the experience of hope in a crisis situation where all meaning—and thus every reason to act—has been lost, the experience of ironic disruption accentuates the constitutive instability and openness of the practical identities we inhabit. Insofar as Rorty cannot account for these phenomena, Lear’s analyses present a serious challenge to Rorty’s neo-pragmatic philosophy. (shrink)

In this paper, I look into the identity of the neighbour in Kierkegaard’s Works of Love, whom I argue has not been identified adequately by previous interpreters. I propose to clarify the identity of the neighbour by contrasting her with the ethical other as presented in four alternative ethical theories. I then set out to reconstruct ethical otherhood in a comparative analysis of Aristotelian virtue ethics, Kantian deontology, Hegelian theory of recognition, and Millian utilitarianism. Ultimately, through a both close and—admittedly—productive (...) reading of Works of Love, I interpret and discuss the fundamental features of Kierkegaard’s neighbour over against these four positions. This paper investigates ontological dimensions of the blockchain by asking what kind of socio-technical object bitcoin is. It discusses both blockchain's political qualities and the political forms enabled by its emergence. It first observes recent approaches to the ontology of money and the political qualities of the ledgers used by the current fractional reserve banking model. It then directs the same questions at blockchain technology. The paper discusses an ontology proposed by Ole Bjerg and argues in favour of a (...) mixed-ontology approach to blockchains. It then questions the political qualities of the distributed ledger as a digital object and highlights the apparent absence of authority figures in the model. Finally, it argues that the political ontology of the blockchain can be framed as the displacement of authority from institutional actors into instrumental control of trust, in a dynamically distributed environment. Il comble une lacune et sera un outil irremplaçable aussi bien pour les byzantinistes que pour les arabisants, comme le sont — et le restent malgré l'inévitable usure du temps — les publications de E. W. Brooks, de L. Caetani, de A. A. Vasiliev, de M. Canard, de (...) E. Honigmann et de quelques autres, qui ont réussi à rétablir les liens entre deux mondes jadis si proches, mais que les spécialités universitaires ont aujourd'hui éloignés l'un de l'autre. (shrink)

En el primer estudio sistemático sobre la psicología de Kierkegaard, Kierkegaard´s Psychology (1972), escrito en danés por Kresten Nordentoft, el autor considera que el primer intento de presentar las teorías psicológicas de Kierkegaard fue realizado por Rollo May en The Meaning of Anxiety (1950). Además de esta obra, en 1958, junto con Ernest Angel y Henri Ellenberguer, May edita Existence. A new dimension in Psychiatry and Psychology. El objetivo de este artículo consiste en describir el modo en que May (...) concibe a Kierkegaard como “psicólogo”, a partir del análisis del existencialismo y su coincidencia con el psicoanálisis en el diagnóstico de la “crisis del individuo moderno”.
