L’Université, définie comme « institution gourmande », valorise la figure symbolique du chercheur entièrement investi dans son travail, supposant un rapport quasi exclusif de l’individu au métier. Cet investissement est d’autant plus réclamé que le chercheur est soumis à l’injonction de produire beaucoup et vite en même temps que de faire preuve d’une mobilité internationale dans un contexte de forte concurrence pour des postes définitifs proportionnellement rares. Étudiant les chargés de recherche recrutés sur des mandats à durée déterminée du Fonds (...) National de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS) en Belgique, les auteurs montrent l’importance d’adopter une perspective relationnelle de la carrière scientifique qui prenne en considération son interférence avec la vie privée. Trois logiques spatio-temporelles sont dégagées : une logique d’intégration, une logique de conciliation et une logique du conflit. Ces logiques sont associées aux situations de vie des chercheurs (être célibataire, en couple, avoir ou non des enfants…) et posent la question du genre. (shrink)

El comentario se concentra en la práctica del voto como mecanismo de decisión y en las estrategias de disolución de las fuerzas antidemocráticas. El que las prácticas efectivas en ambos casos no difieran parece redundar en un déficit para el deliberacionismo, el cual, a diferencia del agonismo, no puede justificar claramente dichas prácticas. A su vez, se detiene en las diferencias epistemológicas que ambas posiciones presentan. The discussion concentrates on two aspects: the practice of voting as a decision mechanism and (...) the strategies for the dissolution of the anti-democratic forces. The fact that effective practices in both cases do not differ leads to a deficit for deliberationism, which, unlike agonism, seems to not be able to clearly justify such practices from its theoretical position. The discussion also pays attention to the differences between the epistemological assumptions that sustain both positions. (shrink)

This paper examines the Hans Blumeberg’s philosophical program: the metaphorology. My intention is to show the importance of Blumenberg’s ideas into the current debate on the relations between philosophy and metaphor.

Ontologies are some of the most central constructs in today's large plethora of knowledge technologies, namely in the context of the semantic web. As their coinage indicates, they are direct heirs to the ontological investigations in the long Western philosophical tradition, but it is not easy to make bridges between them. Contemporary ontological commitments often take causality as a central aspect for the ur-segregation of entities, especially in scientific upper ontologies; theories of causality and philosophical ontological investigations often go hand-in-hand, (...) and were essentially inseparable in medieval thought. This constitutes the foundation for a bridge, and this article analyzes the causality-based ontology of the late medieval philosopher Dietrich of Freiberg from the viewpoint of today's upper-ontology engineering. In this bridging attempt, it offers a translation into English of the first part of Dietrich's De origine (abbreviated title) that is a compromise between traditional scholarly translations of medieval Latin philosophical texts and contemporary ontology. En este trabajo nos proponemos analizar la doble función que cumple el relativismo: por un lado, constituye una crítica a la visión fundacionista que caracterizó a una parte importante de la filosofía de la ciencia contemporánea, específicamente el Positivismo Lógico y algunos de sus herederos. Por otra parte, ofrece una interpretación sobre los aspectos sincrónicos y diacrónicos de la ciencia, que se presenta como una alternativa a las principales caracterizaciones que se hicieron de la ciencia contemporánea, particularmente de su evolución, (...) en el ámbito de la filosofía. Aunque esta concepción relativista de la ciencia tiene múltiples expresiones, por la extensión de este trabajo, sólo nos ocuparemos de algunos aspectos relacionados con los componentes relativistas de la imagen de la ciencia que ofrece Thomas S. The trinitarian theology of Karl Rahner has been the object of much discussion that has concentrated above all on two points: the «fundamental axiom» of the trinitarian theology and the problems surrounding the concept ofthe divine person. The fundamental axiom has helped to reclaim the central place of the mystery of the Trinity in the Christian faith and the need to set out from the economy of salvation as the only way to search more deeply into the mystery of God. (...) If the first part of the axiom, «the economic Trinity is the immanent Trinity», has been commonly accepted, the second, «and vice versa», has been the object of criticism. It must be emphasized in each case that the economy of salvation does not constitute or perfect the triune God and that He acts in it with full freedom. With these provisos, the second part of the axiom becomes not only legitimate but necessary to guarantee the universal mediation of Christ in whom God has reconciled the world to Himself. The concrete development of the trinitarian theology of Karl Rahner is not without its problems. It has been accused of tending toward modalism, in that the «personal» character of the divine hypostases in the immanent Trinity is much diminished. The article reviews the criticisms of various types that have been made and tries to offer a balanced interpretation of the thought of the German theologian that bears in mind its various aspects. George Berkeley proposed his notional doctrine to identify and know finite (human) minds and their operations. Although this doctrine was underdeveloped, if supplemented with other areas of Berkeley’s philosophy, it may contribute some useful criteria to recognize and distinguish non-human minds, specifically artificial minds. The sum of these new additions is what I call Berkeley’s notional doctrine complemented or NDC. Within this paper, I apply the NDC to Philip K. Dick’s androids because they exemplify the thin and diffuse line that (...) separates a natural-human mind from an artificial one. I suggest in this paper that the NDC is applicable to other fields and theories beyond Berkeley’s philosophy, whether they are fictitious like Dick’s novel or real like the current technological innovations in artificial intelligence. In addition to the three stages of existence, Kierkegaard presents other existential forms based on the category of consciousness. One of these is that in which the self obstinately prefers to despair instead of accepting an external foundation and therefore keeping a radical hermetism.

For millennia, knowledge has eluded a precise definition. The industrialization of knowledge (IoK) and the associated proliferation of the so-called knowledge communities in the last few decades caused this state of affairs to deteriorate, namely by creating a trio composed of data, knowledge, and information (DIK) that is not unlike the aporia of the trinity in philosophy. This calls for a general theory of knowledge (ToK) that can work as a foundation for a science of knowledge (SoK) and additionally distinguishes (...) knowledge from both data and information. In this paper, I attempt to sketch this generality via the establishing of both knowledge structures and knowledge systems that can then be adopted/adapted by the diverse communities for the respective knowledge technologies and practices. This is achieved by means of a formal–indeed, mathematical–approach to epistemological matters a.k.a. formal epistemology. The corresponding application focus is on knowledge systems implementable as computer programs. (shrink)

A. Newell and H. A. Simon were two of the most influential scientists in the emerging field of artificial intelligence (AI) in the late 1950s through to the early 1990s. This paper reviews their crucial contribution to this field, namely to symbolic AI. This contribution was constituted mostly by their quest for the implementation of general intelligence and (commonsense) knowledge in artificial thinking or reasoning artifacts, a project they shared with many other scientists but that in their case was theoretically (...) based on the idiosyncratic notions of symbol systems and the representational abilities they give rise to, in particular with respect to knowledge. While focusing on the period 1956-1982, this review cites both earlier and later literature and it attempts to make visible their potential relevance to today's greatest unifying AI challenge, to wit, the design of wholly autonomous artificial agents (a.k.a. robots) that are not only rational and ethical, but also self-conscious. Comparing the relative sensitivity of direct and indirect measures of learning is proposed as the best way to provide evidence for unconscious learning when both conceptual and operative definitions of awareness are lacking. This approach was first proposed by Reingold & Merikle (1988) in the context of subliminal perception. In this paper, we apply it to a choice reaction time task in which the material is generated based on a probabilistic finite-state grammar (Cleeremans, 1993). We show (1) that participants progressively (...) learn about the statistical structure of the stimulus material over training with the choice reaction time task, and (2) that they can use some of this knowledge to predict the location of the next stimulus in a subsequent “generation” task. However, detailed partial correlational analyses of the correspondence between performance during the reaction time task and the statistical structure of the training material showed that large effects remained even when controlling for explicit knowledge as assessed by the generation task. Hence we conclude (1) that at least some of the knowledge expressed through reaction time performance can not be characterized as conscious, and (2) that even when associations are found at a global level of analysis, dissociations can still be obtained when more detailed analyses are conducted. Finally, we also show that participants are limited in the depth of the contingencies they can learn about, and that these limitations are shared by the Simple Recurrent Network model of Cleeremans & McClelland (1991). The purpose of this article is to examine Pascal’s conception of imagination in its necessary articulation with the notion of self-love. Derived from Augustinian theology, the notion of self-love is identifed with the notion of pride and is one of the three fundamental cupidities that rule the fallen man when he is not under the action of divine grace. Pascal goes further than Augustine and makes this passion the defning feature of the fallen man, leading him in his tyrannical relationship (...) with other men. The instrument of self-love to achieve its goals is, precisely, imagination, a deceptive faculty that, even against reason, estimates the value of all objects and is the essential factor in determining purely human happiness. O artigo explora as noções de mal e privação em Espinosa, sobretudo com base na sua correspondência com Blyenbergh. Pretendo mostrar que Espinosa radicaliza a solução de Agostinho e Descartes para o mesmo problema, recusando-se a dar qualquer tipo de consistência ontológica para a privação. Tanto quanto a noção de mal, a própria privação só pode ser pensada como o resultado de uma comparação meramente imaginativa, sem nenhuma incidência na realidade.

We consider simplified representation theorems in pcf-theory and, in particular, we prove that if ${\aleph_{\omega}^{\aleph_{0}} > \aleph_{\omega_{1}}\cdot2^{\aleph_{0}}}$ then there are cofinally many sequences of regular cardinals such that ${\aleph_{\omega_{1}+1}}$ is represented by these sequences modulo the ideal of finite subsets, using a topological approach to the pcf-structure.

Are philosophy and literature allies or enemies in Jorge Luis Borges's fictions? In this paper, I argue that Borges can satisfy membership in the allies camp because his fictions provide the imaginative scenarios the allies believe are so necessary to this coalition; however, because his stories question philosophy's hold on reality, they can also seem to fall into the enemies camp by countervailing any claim philosophy has on reality and truth; although, ultimately, the manner in which Borges forges an (...) alliance between philosophy and literature will be for reasons not traditionally accepted by those in either the allies or enemies camps. Jorge Luis Borges: Well, I think that's an easy one. You might talk in terms of two: Berkeley and Schopenhauer. But I suppose Hume might be worked in (...) also, because, after all, Hume refutes Berkeley. Really, he comes from Berkeley—even if Berkeley comes from Locke. You might think of Locke, of Berkeley, and of Hume as being three links in an argument..... But I suppose that when someone refutes someone else in philosophy, he is carrying on the argument. P&L: And Schopenhauer? Borges: Schopenhauer is very different from Hume. Of course, Schopenhauer had his idea of the Will. That is not to be found in Hume.... The case of Berkeley was different. I suppose he thought of God as being aware of all things all the time, if I don't get him wrong. If we go away, does this room disappear? No, because God is thinking about it. Now, in the case of Schopenhauer, I was rereading Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung, The World as Will and Idea, and I was rather taken aback, or baffled I should say, puzzled by something that keeps on recurring in Schopenhauer. Of course it may have been a slip of the pen, but as he goes back to it, and as he was a very careful writer, I wonder if it is a slip of the pen. For example, Schopenhauer begins by saying that the universe, the stars, the spaces in between, the planets, *On April 14, 1976, two editors of Philosophy and Literature, along with an interested colleague, interviewed Jorge Luis Borges at Michigan State University, where he held a position as visiting professor for the winter term. These remarks are edited from the transcript of that conversation. 337 338Philosophy and Literature this planet, those things, have no existence—except in the mind which perceives them. But then, to my surprise—and I suppose you can explain this to me, since you are philosophers and I am not—what Schopenhauer says is that all those things have no existence except in the brain. Then I came to the idea of how fine it would be to think of an encyclopedia... a very rigorous one of course, of an imaginary world, where everything should be linked. For example, you would have a language and then a literature, and then a history and so on. Then I thought I would write a story of a fancy encyclopedia.
