    Non-definability of the class of complete bundled trees.A. Zanardo, B. Barcellan & M. Reynolds - 1999 - Logic Journal of the IGPL 7 (1):125-136.
In several semantics for branching-time logic, the evaluation rules involve a quantification over the set of all histories in a given tree-like structure T. These semantics are often generalized by replacing these quantifications by quantifications over a bundle in T, that is, over a set of histories fulfilling suitable closure properties. According to this generalization, the basic semantical structures are pairs 〈T, B〉 in which B is a bundle in T.The problem of the definability of the class of complete bundled (...)

Metacognition and change detection: Do lab and life really converge?Daniel Smilek, John D. Eastwood, Michael G. Reynolds & Alan Kingstone - 2008 - Consciousness and Cognition 17 (3):1056-1061.
Studies of change blindness indicate that more intentional monitoring of changes is necessary to successfully detect changes as scene complexity increases. However, there have been conflicting reports as to whether people are aware of this relation between intention and successful change detection as scene complexity increases. Here we continue our dialogue with [Beck, M. R., Levin, D. T., & Angelone, B. . Change blindness blindness: Beliefs about the roles of intention and scene complexity in change detection. Consciousness and Cognition, 16, (...)

Magnetic Field Effect on Heat and Momentum of Fractional Maxwell Nanofluid within a Channel by Power Law Kernel Using Finite Difference Method.Maha M. A. Lashin, Muhammad Usman, Muhammad Imran Asjad, Arfan Ali, Fahd Jarad & Taseer Muhammad - 2022 - Complexity 2022:1-16.
The mathematical model of physical problems interprets physical phenomena closely. This research work is focused on numerical solution of a nonlinear mathematical model of fractional Maxwell nanofluid with the finite difference element method. Addition of nanoparticles in base fluids such as water, sodium alginate, kerosene oil, and engine oil is observed, and velocity profile and heat transfer energy profile of solutions are investigated. The finite difference method involving the discretization of time and distance parameters is applied for numerical results by (...)

Metacognitive errors in change detection: Lab and life converge.Melissa R. Beck, Daniel T. Levin & Bonnie L. Angelone - 2007 - Consciousness and Cognition 16 (1):58-62.
Smilek, Eastwood, Reynolds, and Kingstone suggests that the studies reported in Beck, M. R., Levin, D. T. and Angelone, B. A. are not ecologically valid. Here, we argue that not only are change blindness and change blindness blindness studies in general ecologically valid, but that the studies we reported in Beck, Levin, and Angelone, 2007 are as well. Specifically, we suggest that many of the changes used in our study could reasonably be expected to occur in the real world. (...)

  13. The ethics of public health paternalism.T. M. Wilkinson - 2024 - New York, NY: Oxford University Press.
The Ethics of Public Health Paternalism is about policies that try to stop people damaging their own health. From the point of view of public health advocates, if people did not smoke, or drank less alcohol, or kept off junk food and sugary liquids, they would tend to be healthier. Hence such tactics as taxing tobacco, restricting the sale of alcohol, and limiting the density of fast-food outlets. These tactics are often pejoratively described as the actions of a 'nanny state' (...)

Back-action in the measurement of “macroscopic quantum superpositions” in microwave cavities.T. Zaugg, M. Wilkens & P. Meystre - 1993 - Foundations of Physics 23 (6):857-871.
We analyze the back-action of nonlinear atomic homodyning measurements on steady-state “macroscopic superpositions” that can be generated in high-Q microwave cavities. We show that a full characterization of the state requires measurements such that the macroscopic superposition is irreversibly destroyed, that is, it cannot be reconstructed by using the scheme that was used to generate it in the first place.

Nearly done, you are about to print out what you have finished when a dialog box appears on your computer screen telling you that you must download and install an update for some piece of software. Frustrated, you try to make it go away, but it keeps reappearing. So you relent and click on ‘Install’, and your screen is filled with small print listing ‘Terms and Conditions’. (...)

LOGICIANS owe a considerable debt of gratitude to Ogden and Veatch for their highly satisfactory exposition of the problem of existential import in the Square of Opposition and for their stimulating efforts to solve it. The authors gave an apt description of the situation reigning in this field when they said.

    Aesthetics: Volume 1.T. M. Knox (ed.) - 1998 - Clarendon Press.
This is the first of two volumes of the only English edition of Hegel's Aesthetics, in which he gives full expression to his seminal theory of art. The substantial Introduction is his best exposition of his general philosophy of art. In Part I he considers the general nature of art as a spiritual experience, distinguishes the beauty of art and the beauty of nature, and examines artistic genius and originality. Part II surveys the history of art from the ancient world (...)

    Toward a Unified Theory of Narcosis: Brain Imaging Evidence for a Thalamocortical Switch as the Neurophysiologic Basis of Anesthetic-Induced Unconsciousness.M. T. Alkire, R. J. Haier & J. H. Fallon - 2000 - Consciousness and Cognition 9 (3):370-386.
A unifying theory of general anesthetic-induced unconsciousness must explain the common mechanism through which various anesthetic agents produce unconsciousness. Functional-brain-imaging data obtained from 11 volunteers during general anesthesia showed specific suppression of regional thalamic and midbrain reticular formation activity across two different commonly used volatile agents. These findings are discussed in relation to findings from sleep neurophysiology and the implications of this work for consciousness research. It is hypothesized that the essential common neurophysiologic mechanism underlying anesthetic-induced unconsciousness is, as with (...)
