The immediate successors of Kant in classical German philosophy considered a subjectivity irreducible to objecthood as the core of personhood. The thesis of an irreducible subjectivity has, after the German idealists, been advocated by the phenomenological movement, as well as by analytical philosophers of self-consciousness such as Hector-Neri Castaneda and Sydney Shoemaker. Their arguments together show that self-consciousness cannot be reduced to a relation whereby a subject grasps itself as an object, but that there must be a core of subjectivity (...) always already familiar with itself before reflection. A number of contemporary accounts of self-consciousness are unaware of these old and new arguments, and flawed in that they do not account for the core 'non-objectal subjectivity' necessary for self-consciousness and. The work of the German philosopher Manfred Frank has profoundly affected the direction of the contemporary debate in many areas of philosophy and literary theory. This present collection, first published in 1998, brings together some of his most important essays, on subjects as diverse as Schleiermacher's hermeneutics, the status of the literary text, and the response to the work of Derrida and Lacan. Frank shows how the discussions of subjectivity in recent literary theory fail to take account of important (...) developments in German Idealist and Romantic philosophy. The prominence accorded language in literary theory and analytic philosophy, he claims, ignores key arguments inherited from Romantic hermeneutics, those which demonstrate that interpretation is an individual activity never finally governed by rules. The ways in which languages express primary sense qualities have been investigated quite unevenly, which is due to the fact that there are great differences in how the senses are linguistically represented, which in turn reflects differences in these sense qualities themselves and their role in cognition.

This work introduces two new curves that are multivariate generalizations of the “classical” Lorenz curve. All data of d-variate distributions can be visualized by drawing these curves in the plane, whereas Koshevoy’s and Mosler’s generalization by a lift zonoid in ℝd+1 can only be drawn for d = 2. The generalizations of the Lorenz curve induce partial orderings of d-variate distributions. Furthermore, two inequality or heterogeneity measures that are consistent with the induced rankings are proposed. They can be considered as (...) new generalizations of the univariate Gini coefficient. For deciding which of the two measures is more appropriate for measuring a sort of convergence concerning different countries of an union or of regions of a country, we establish systems of axioms. Although these systems are reflecting natural properties, several of the axioms are new. Moreover, by means of these axioms well- known inequality measures are tested, too. (shrink)

The unusual occurrence and developmental diversity of asexual eukaryotes remain a puzzle. De novo formation of a functioning asexual genome requires a unique assembly of sets of genes or gene states to disrupt cellular mechanisms of meiosis and gametogenesis, and to affect discrete components of sexuality and produce clonal or hemiclonal offspring. We highlight two usually overlooked but essential conditions to understand the molecular nature of clonal organisms, that is, a nonrecombinant genomic assemblage retaining modifiers of the sexual program, and (...) a complementation between altered reproductive components. These subtle conditions are the basis for physiologically viable and genetically balanced transitions between generations. Genomic and developmental evidence from asexual animals and plants indicates the lack of complementation of molecular changes in the sexual reproductive program is likely the main cause of asexuals' rarity, and can provide an explanatory frame for the developmental diversity and lability of developmental patterns in some asexuals as well as for the discordant time to extinction estimations. Der Artikel sucht eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit der sogenannten Finalisierungsthese. Diese postuliert eine externe Steuerung der Wissenschaft, die "Indienstnahme" der "wissenschaftlichen" durch die "gesellschaftliche Praxis". Schon im Ansatz zeigt die Finalisierungsthese einige gravierende Mängel, die noch gravierender in ihren methodologischen Voraussetzungen - u.a. der Ablehnung der Kausalforschungsmethode - zum Ausdruck kommen. Bei näherer Analyse enthüllt sich die Finalisierungsthese als rein normatives Konzept, als der bloße Anspruch, Wissenschaft könne und solle extern gesteuert werden.

Präsenz und Distanz: von diesem Verhältnis handelt die Phänomenologie, wenn sie sich, behutsam beschreibend, der Lebenswelt und dem Zeitbewußtsein zuwendet. Lebensweltliches Leben ist unmittelbare Anschauung am Anfang des Übergangs zu begrifflichem Denken und symbolischen Repräsentanten, ist ursprüngliche Einheit und beginnendes Auseinander von subjektivem Erlebnis und objektiver Realität. All unsere Erlebnisse aber kommen und gehen in der Zeit des Bewußtseins. Sie ist die Form eines Fließens, in dem uns der Augenblick der Gegenwart erst nachträglich faßbar wird; er erweist sich als der (...) immer schon vergangene Anfang einer Nah-Erinnerung, die beides zugleich ist: Noch-Gegenwart und Schon-Vergangenheit: Präsenz gibt es erst im Abstand von ihr. - Mit dem, was unser bewußtes Leben zuunterst trägt und zuinnerst hält, befassen sich die Beschreibungen und Interpretationen dieses Buches: mit dem lebensweltlichen Grund und der zeitlichen Form. Associationism can be broadly defined as a school of thought in philosophy and psychology that holds that mental activity can be accounted for by processes that combine simple elements or ideas. More than a century ago, scientific psychology started taking measurements of word associations, and only a few years later, word associations became a major research tool in psychiatry. With the advent of neurobiology and the discovery of the neuron, the term association came to denote physical connections between cells or (...) parts of the brain. The resulting ambiguity made the concept highly fruitful and at the same time introduced the risk of committing categorical mistakes and of engaging in unfounded speculation, since little was known about the actual functioning of neurons. In modern cognitive neuroscience, computational models provide the critically needed link between the psychological and the biological approaches. The concept of association, with its biological, psychological, and computational connotations, provides the framework needed for further experimental research. Its potential for contributing to our understanding of psychopathology can hardly be overestimated. (shrink)

Man hat oft von der Revolution im Weltbild der Physik gesprochen, die durch die Relativitätstheorie und die Quantentheorie ausgelöst worden ist. Bücher über das Naturbild der heutigen Physik beschränken sich meist nicht auf die Darstellung von Grundstrukturen und Ergebnissen der Physik in einer Sprache, die einem größeren Kreis von Leserinnen und Lesern zugänglich ist, sondern thematisieren auch die Folgen, die die neuen physikalischen Theorien für allgemeinere Fragen haben. Zeigt die Quantentheorie z. B., dass der Determinismus der klassischen Physik aufgegeben werden (...) muss? Können Teilchenbahnen und zeitlich sich verändernde Felder weiter als grundlegende Werkzeuge zur Beschreibung von Bewegungen verwendet werden? Müssen wir uns vielleicht sogar von der Vorstellung der objektiven Realität der Elementarteilchen verabschieden? Zweifellos sind Relativitätstheorie und Quantentheorie relevant für die Naturphilosophie und wichtig, wenn man nach einer kohärenten Gesamtsicht der Natur strebt. Aber sind die Änderungen in den metaphysischen, erkenntnistheoretischen und methodischen Annahmen, die in die naturwissenschaftliche Forschung eingehen, wirklich so einfach aus den Theorien der Physik ablesbar? El presente artículo pone en duda la interpretación corriente según la cual el Diálogo entre un Filósofo, un Judío y un Cristiano representa un diálogo interreligioso por el que Abelardo se aproximaría a una moderna concepción de tolerancia. La tesis principal es que, si se presta la atención debida a la naturaleza literaria de la obra, ésta se revelará no como un diálogo entre distintas religiones, sino como un diálogo interno entre distintos aspectos de la fe cristiana, cuyas tensiones son (...) escenificadas en la forma de un diálogo entre religiones. The present article departs from the traditional reading of the Dialogue Between a Philosopher, a Jew and a Christian , which interprets the work as an interreligious dialogue in which Abelard comes near to a modern notion of tolerance. The main thesis is that, once due attention is given to the literary nature of the work, it reveals itself not as a dialogue between different religions, but as a dialogue between different aspects of the Christian faith, which tensions are staged in the form of a dialogue between religions. Desde hace unas décadas se ha manifestado un movimiento en la literatura relevante que busca la superación de la tolerancia, especialmente en casos como el de la diversidad sexual y otras diferencias atributivas. La idea subyacente es que la tolerancia es incompatible con el respeto que nos debemos como iguales en una democracia. En este artículo argumentamos que la noción de respeto que motiva tal movimiento es inadecuada políticamente, dados los profundos desacuerdos de nuestras sociedades. En su lugar proponemos una (...) alternativa que denominamos “respeto institucional”, que privilegia las posibilidades efectivas de participación política. (shrink)

The Protestant reception both of Aristotle and of the concept of natural law have been the object of renewed attention. The present article aims at a cross-fertilization of these two recoveries: did a specifically Aristotelian approach to natural law play a significant role in classical Protestant thought? The article answers this question by means of a review of the Protestant commentaries on Aristotle’s natural law-passage in Nicomachean Ethics V, 7. Reformation and post-Reformation scholars sometimes offered original readings of this text, (...) but above all they cultivated the various approaches to the passage that had been developed during the medieval period.
