Two different kinds of stochastic processes in Hilbert space used to introduce spontaneous localization into the quantum evolution are investigated. In the processes of the first type, finite changes of the wave function take place instantaneously with a given mean frequency. The processes of the second type are continuous. It is shown that under a suitable infinite frequency limit the discontinuous process transforms itself into the continuous one.

We provide a framework for understanding agnosticism. The framework accounts for the varieties of agnosticism while vindicating the unity of the phenomenon. This combination of unity and plurality is achieved by taking the varieties of agnosticism to be represented by several agnostic stances, all of which share a common core provided by what we call the minimal agnostic attitude. We illustrate the fruitfulness of the framework by showing how it can be applied to several philosophical debates. The heristic argument with which Meno questions the possibility of inquiry and knowledge is tackled by Socrates through the reference to an archaic and religious doctrine, according to which the soul is immortal and has seen all things. Through this reference Socrates actually wants to affirm the affinity between the soul and the world of forms. So behind the myth of the prenatal vision of forms by the soul Plato intends to assert the ontological condition of the soul, that is, (...) its affinity to forms. (shrink)

In this paper I offer some critical comments to MacFarlane's recent book "Assessment Sensitivity". I focus primarily on MacFarlane's understanding of the normative aspects of enquiry—in particular I take issue with the phenomena of retraction and disagreement as preclusion of joint accuracy. I argue that both notions are problematic and that—at least in the case of basic taste—they are not needed in order to account for our intuitions.

Tracing a central theme of Plato's Republic , G. R. F. Ferrari reconsiders in this study the nature and purpose of the comparison between the structure of society and that of the individual soul. In four chapters, Ferrari examines the personalities and social status of the brothers Glaucon and Adeimantus, Plato's notion of justice, coherence in Plato's description of the decline of states, and the tyrant and the philosopher king—a pair who, in their different ways, break with the (...) terms of the city-soul analogy. In addition to acknowledging familiar themes in the interpretation of the Republic —the sincerity of its utopianism, the justice of the philosopher's return to the Cave—Ferrari provocatively engages secondary literature by Leo Strauss, Bernard Williams, and Jonathan Lear. With admirable clarity and insight, Ferrari conveys the relation between the city and the soul and the choice between tyranny and philosophy. Since it is now broadly acknowledged that ethics should receive early consideration in discourse on emerging technologies, ethical debates tend to flourish even while new fields of technology are still in their infancy. Such debates often liberally mix existing applications with technologies in the pipeline and far-reaching visions. This paper analyses the problems associated with this use of ethics as “preparatory” research, taking discourse on human enhancement in general and on pharmaceutical cognitive enhancement in particular as an example. The paper (...) will outline and discuss the gap between the scientific and technological state of the art and the ethical debates, pointing out epistemic problems in this context. Furthermore, it will discuss the future role of genuine ethical reflection in discourse on human enhancement, arguing also that such discourse needs to include a technology assessment—in the broad sense of the term—which encompasses, inter alia, anthropological perspectives and aspects of social theory. This essay examines the figure of Amadeo Peter Giannini, founder of the Bank of Italy (later Bank of America), as an example of an _alternative_ banking model based on ethical and humanistic principles inspired by Franciscan socio-economic thought. The analysis explores how values such as fraternity, gratuity, simplicity, humility, and service - rarely found in the financial sector - can be integrated into _banking management_ to create a positive and democratic impact. The objective is to fill a gap in research (...) at the intersection of ethics, spirituality, and economics, demonstrating that an approach grounded in _human dignity_ and the _common good_ can be successful even in a profit-oriented context. This vision proved to have a significant impact during critical moments, such as the San Francisco earthquake and the Great Depression, showing Giannini’s deep _trust_ in human resilience and dignity. Furthermore, the _faithful banker_ supported emerging industries like film and wine and invested in infrastructure projects like the Golden Gate, contributing to California’s economic and social development. Through the analysis of historical sources and testimonies, it is highlighted that the humanistic model of the “_gentle giant_” not only promoted financial inclusion and democratization, inspired by the Monti di Pietà, and access to credit for working-class people and immigrants but also fostered a visionary role for the bank as a _trusted partner_ in social progress. This approach demonstrated that finance could be a tool for _community wealth_, uniting economic growth with human development. The legacy of this _humble banker_ confirms that corporate prosperity is not at odds with social justice and sustainable development. His “_moral_” banking philosophy, rooted in trust, humanity, and fraternity, represents a model for integrating economy and faith, rejecting individualism and promoting inclusivity and fraternity. The Taste of the Secret was published in Italy in 1997. At that time, I was facing two problems: a general one, regarding the dangers of postmodernism, and a particular one – that is, my relationship with Derrida. In the same year Estetica Razionale also came out. There I articulated my realist turn and my distancing from the philosophical tradition I grew up in. The change of perspective reflected by these books was very simple: deconstruction does not consist in claiming (...) that everything is socially constructed – and that therefore everything can be deconstructed – but that there are objects resisting deconstruction and that these provides the starting point for deconstruction itself. I found this resistance mainly in Aesthetics, in its original sense of aisthesis (i.e. perception). Perception does not offer truth, but it undoubtedly provides the resistance that the world sets against our conceptual schemes (Il mondo esterno, 2001), starting from the most obscure of our senses, touch. After all, if we look at the late Derrida, we will notice that he dwells on the topic of touch. This proves that at a certain point Derrida also felt the need of a return to reality. In my Documentality (2009) – but already in An Ontology of the Cell Phone (2005) – I weakened his famous peremptory statement that “there is nothing outside the text” by turning it into “there is nothing social outside the text”. And yet, I acknowledge that the importance of documents was already fully expressed in the Derridian idea of grammatology. Thus, what I did in all these years was to go against one Derrida in the name of another. (shrink)

Historically the plan has been about much more than economic planning. By plan-based thought I mean a concept of social governance that requires a multiple but structured articulation of social, economic, administrative and political forces and institutions and aims at shaping new forms of integration and social control using a specific scientific discourse.The following essays provide an analysis of global planning starting from different historical and geographical situations and different disciplinary perspectives. The broad picture that emerges shows points of continuity (...) and discontinuity between different contexts and theories but also reveals a common theme: the conflictual relationship between economics and politics which not only reflects the hierarchies between state and society but also shows the dialectic between different forms and conceptions of power and their social reproduction. Plan-based thought does not only concern temporary institutional transformations, but reacts and is connected to the management of social conflicts over time. (shrink)

Being in force in 70 countries around the world and covering more than two thirds of world trade, the 1980 United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods is considered to be the most successful convention promoting international trade. According to many commentators, this success is due to the fact that, amongst others, the Convention does not directly impact the domestic law of the various legal systems, as it applies only to international â?? as opposed to purely (...) domestic â?? contracts. The Convention, in other words, does not impose changes in the domestic law, which makes it easier for States to adopt the Convention. This does not mean, however, that the Convention does not have any impact on the domestic law at all. This book analyzes â?? through 24 country reports, as well as a general report submitted to the 1st Intermediate Congress of the International Academy of Comparative Law held in November 2008 in Mexico City â?? to what extent the Convention de facto influences the domestic legal system. In particular, the book examines the Convention's impact on legal education, on the practice of law, as well as on the style of court decisions. (shrink)

In this paper we investigate whether and to what extent scientists (e.g. inquirers such as epidemiologists or virologists) can have rational and fruitful disagreement with what we call post-enquirers (e.g. conspiratorial anti-vaxxers) on topics of scientific relevance such as the safety and efficacy of vaccines. In order to accomplish this aim, we will rely and expand on the epistemological framework developed in detail in Ferrari & Moruzzi (2021) to study the underlying normative profile of enquiry and post-enquiry. We take (...) it that our analysis provides an effective explanation of why standard argumentative strategies such as fact-checking and debunking cannot work in the context of disagreement between scientists and denialists unless they are coupled with a discussion of the values that are endorsed by the scientific community. This full-length study of Plato's dialogue Phaedrus, now in paperback, is written in the belief that such concerted scrutiny of a single dialogue is an important part of the project of understanding Plato so far as possible 'from the inside' - of gaining a feel for the man's philosophy. The focus of this account is on how the resources both of persuasive myth and of formal argument, for all that Plato sets them in strong contrast, nevertheless complement and reinforce each (...) other in his philosophy. Not only is the dialogue in its formal structure a dovetail of myth and argument, but the philosophic life that it praises is also shaped by an acknowledgement of the limitations of argument and the importance of mythical understanding. By means of this correlation of form and content Plato invites his readers, through the very act of reading, to take a first step along the path of the philosophical life. (shrink)

Many of Marco Aurelio Severino’s works were published in Germany, thanks to the intercession of his pupils. The prestigious Nürnberg physician Johann Georg Volkamer was Severino’s closest pupil. A relevant manuscript letter of Severino to Volkamer sheds new light on the context of the edition of Severino’s Zootomia democritaea. The correspondence between Severino and Volkamer was firstly studied by Luigi Amabile in the Ninteenth-century, and it was fully exploited by Maurizio Torrini about a century later.

The aim of the present paper is twofold. First, we are interested in assessing the validity of one version of Kim’s argument against genuine higher level causation. Second, we discuss Wilson’s proposal to consider a weaker notion of emergence as genuinely metaphysical and compatible with Non-Reductive Physicalism. Our conclusion is that both proposals fail: the first in preempting genuine (strong) emergent causation, whereas the second in ensuring a genuinely metaphysical status to weak emergence. After all, Wilson’s proposal strongly depends on (...) the success of Kim’s, not only because it takes it as valid but, also, because in pursuing its own weaker model it shares the presuppositions that led Kim’s to failure. At the end of the day, Wilson’s conception of genuine weak emergence either breaks causal closure or is merely stipulative, namely confined at the descriptive level. (shrink)
