Schönheit ist Freiheit in der Erscheinung", so lautet ein berühmter Satz von Friedrich Schiller. Er dachte dabei an die Natur, aber auch an die "schöne Seele" oder an "schönes Handeln". So reicht das Thema dieses Bandes über die Ästhetik im engeren Sinn hinaus und zeigt, dass Schönheit kein Luxus ist. Obwohl fragil und vergänglich und vielfach angefeindet, versöhnt und verbindet sie: niemand kann ohne sie leben.00Schönheit hat noch eine andere Seite. Simone Mahrenholz und Josef Früchtl weisen auf "das gefährliche Schöne", (...) auf die Anziehungskraft des Terrors hin. Wie Rilke das Schreckliche beim Anblick des Engels beschreibt, fordert das Schöne auch zur Reflexion auf. „Neřest” je nepatřičný pojem a mohlo by se zdát, že moderní civilizace se neřestí zbavuje. Pro některé neřesti to platit může, ale stále existují chamtivost (fixace na peníze a materiální věci), melancholie (acedia) a nevděčnost – případně jako druh pýchy („superbia”) –, které tomu, kdo má vše, brání v tom, aby byl šťastný.

Starting out from the basic post-modern insight that there is no text apart from interpretation, Ronald Dworkin seeks to salvage traditional jurisprudence by relocating the skeptical question of legitimacy. Utilizing this same insight, Critical Legal Studies seeks to undermine traditional jurisprudence and inspire radical social reform. Yet both fail to live up to their own expectations. "Hard" cases are still hard, and liberal legalism still reigns. So what went wrong? In this dissertation, I contend that the quixotic quests of Dworkin (...) and CLS ultimately stem from a reluctance to follow through on the basic post-modern insight. Exaggerated expectations are the result of a lingering faith in the modernist project. As an alternative to Dworkin's "integrity" and CLS's "ideology," I defend Richard Rorty's vision of pragmatic liberalism which explicitly disavows foundations and incorporates lowered expectations concerning the role of theory in bringing about social change. Läßt sich der Begriff ,,scientia affectiva" von der Theologie des 13. Jahrhunderts auf die Philosophie übertragen? Die Frage setzt die Klärung dessen voraus, was mit ,,affectus" gemeint ist – die auf gleicher Augenhöhe mit dem ,,intellectus" stehende, komplementäre geistige Seelenkraft. Den ,,affectus" privilegieren intellektkritische Philosophen wie Jacobi, Scheler, Levinas. Aber auch Kants Werk trägt affektive Züge. Ziel der Studie ist es, die erhellende Funktion des mittelalterlichen affectus-Begriffs – etwa als Hingabefähigkeit – so zur Sprache zu bringen, daß er als Korrektiv (...) und Ergänzung des Intellekts plausibel wird. Ein Kurzschluß ,,Affekt sei gleich Bauch" braucht dabei nicht befürchtet zu werden. (shrink)

Der Umschlag von Dankbarkeit zu Ärger ist weniger verwunderlich, wenn wir uns an die Lehre von Thomas von Aquin erinnern, dass „die Vergeltung einer Gunst mehr vom affectus des Gebenden als vom effectus [der Gabe] abhängt.“.

AnlaB, dieses Bueh niederzusehreiben, ist ein empiriseh-analytisehes Unbehagen. Besehaftigt mit einer Untersuehung zur Anwendung sozialwissensehaftlieher Erkenntnisse in Wirtsehaftsbetrieben und in der politisehen Administration, muBten wir feststellen, daB die Grundlagen der Befragung einer theoretisehen Klarung besonders bedurftig waren. Dieser die Untersuehung begleitende ProzeB der theoretisehen Se1bstverstandigung begann mit der Einsieht, daB der empiriseh-analytisehe Erfahrungsbegriff der Sozialwissensehaft die Wirkliehkeit dieser Wissensehaft nur unvollkommen erreieht. Es war daher naheliegend, zunaehst einige methodologisehe Grundfragen zu diskutieren, die fur die sozialwissensehaftliehe Theorie und Empirie konstitutiv sind. (...) Das Ergebnis dieser Diskussion laBt sieh dahingehend zusammenfassen, daB die Grunddisziplin der Sozialwissenschaft dann die Philosophie sein muB, wenn die Inter­ pretation empiriseher Befunde nieht beliebig sein solI. Spinoza assigns to the imagination a wide-ranging and often disparate looking set of operations. Commentators have long recognized that these operations share a certain proximity to the body and a common tendency to lead people into error. Yet others remark on the apparent thinness of an overarching theme. This article examines the prominent and often underappreciated role of memory in unifying Spinoza’s account of imaginative cognition. The discussion revisits various aspects of imagination in light of their integrated characterization as forms (...) of remembering. The article also assesses reasons other than memory that Spinoza has for grouping them in common. The examination focuses on the intrinsic character of the imagination and its related operations in the Ethics, while occasionally bringing other works into play. (shrink)

"Textual Reasoning" is the name a family of contemporary Jewish thinkers has given to its overlapping practices of Jewish philosophy and theology. This collection represents the most public expression to date of the shared work, over a period of 12 years, of this society of "textual reasoners." Although the movement of textual reasoning is diverse and pluriform, it is characterized at bottom by the pursuit of the claim that there are significant affinities between Jewish forms of reading and reasoning and (...) postmodern thought. These affinities are presently being pursued by scholars throughout Jewish studies, in fields such as Bible, Talmud, Midrash, medieval philosophy, Kabbalah and the Jewish penomenology of Rosenzweig and Levinas among others. As the essays here convey, the work of these scholars has stimulated a lively and creative re-engagement with the philosophical dimensions of Jewish texts and, even more, the textual dimensions of Jewish reasoning. In large part this new energy has come from a conception of the postmodern as a place where some of the most distinctive features of Jewish reasoning can be elucidated as well as challenged. Bridging from Husserl to Iamblichus, this book contributes phenomenological readings of Plotinus, Aristotle, Parmenides, and Heraclitus, in which prevalent misconceptions about the very identity of time in the phenomena of motion are corrected, and time's role in Greek philosophy recovered.

Early modern experimental philosophers were opposed to speculation, and yet many endorsed speculative theories. This chapter gives a partial explanation of why this is so, using Robert Boyle’s acceptance and promotion of the corpuscular philosophy as a case study. It argues that, in addition to furnishing experimental evidence for the corpuscular hypothesis in his Forms and Qualities, Boyle attempted to establish its epistemic superiority over other speculative theories on the grounds that it is founded upon superior principles. In his ‘Excellency (...) and Grounds of the Mechanical Hypothesis’, Boyle claims that the principles of the corpuscular philosophy are more intelligible, more parsimonious, ontologically primary, simpler and more comprehensive than those of its rivals. On grounds of comparative plausibility then, according to Boyle, the corpuscular philosophy is eminently preferable to its rivals. The final section of the chapter traces the legacy of Boyle’s appraisal of the epistemic status of the corpuscular philosophy in the writings of many of his compatriots from the mid-1660s to the Cyclopedia of Ephraim Chambers of 1728.
