Pierre de Coubertin’s ambiguous ideas regarding sports, conflict, violence, and war are clearly illustrated in his article “Sport and Warfare” that he wrote for the Revue Olympique in 1912. In this short essay, the founding father of the modern Olympic Games contends that there is no direct causal relation between sport and war. Rather, sports can be conceived as a social instrument which shapes the bodies and minds of its participants. While, on the one hand, sports may help (...) men to feel ready and prepared for war. However, Coubertin believes that sport and its philosophy may teach future soldiers to behave more virtuously and less violently. His hope is that, through encouraging future soldiers to display specific skills and sportsmanship on the battlefield, sport may help in humanizing and rationalizing modern warfare. (shrink)

D'après Confucius, il y a six « arts libéraux » qui sont : la musique, le cérémonial, l'arithmétique, la calligraphie, l'escrime et « l'art de conduire un char ». Donc pas de gymnastique encore. L'escrime donne satisfaction à l'instinct combatif, mais il ne paraît pas que cet instinct ait suffi à la propager en Extrême-Orient. À remarquer que la première escrime naturelle n'a pu être celle du poing qui demande une contrainte et un assouplissement artificiels préalables. Il était plus naturel (...) à l'homme primitif de s'emparer d'un bâton ou même de lutter simplement corps à corps ou encore de chercher à frapper par le jet d'une pierre. Les escrimes d'Extrême-Orient sont demeurées des spectacles et n'ont donné naissance à aucune institution pédagogique sauf -- plus tard, au Japon -- le jiu-jitsu. (shrink)

Olympism often presents itself as “a philosophy of life” aiming to promote “a peaceful society.” Pierre de Coubertin (1863-1937), the founder of the modern Olympics Games, is often seen as a great humanist in the history of modern sport. Indeed, scholars often state that Coubertin has worked all his life to promote social and international peace by the means of sports. In this respect, the “Olympic Truce” would stand as a symbol of the pacifists aims of Olympism. (...) However, as my paper aims to show, those common depictions of Olympism rest on a misunderstanding of Pierre de Coubertin's conceptions of peace, conflict, and sport. First, Coubertin does not understand peace as a condition which excludes human conflicts. Second, he defined sports as a means for social control. Third, in Coubertin, sports are not directly a means to promote pacifists ideals. Rather, peace appears as means to promote the values and ideas embodied by the sportsman. My study delves into this ambivalent relation between peace and sport in Coubertin. (shrink)

En este trabajo argumento que los juegos Olímpicos modernos están fincados en mitos provenientes de la burguesía victoriana europea, quienes vieron en la apropiación de denominada "cultura clásica", la ocasión perfecta para universalizar sus ideales y valores burgueses, lo que hasta nuestros días ha significado una concepción del olimpismo en términos eurocéntricos, colonialistas e imperialistas. El primer mito que intento desmontar es el que identifica la función del olimpismo con la promoción de paz y armonía entre todos los pueblos. El (...) segundo es el mito del maratón y en tercer lugar muestro que el proyecto olímpico de Coubertin en realidad estaba anidado en el proyecto pedagógico imperialista británico que veía en el deporte la ocasión perfecta para inculcar en los infantes el amateurismo, el respeto a las jerarquías y el orden, valores centrales para los intereses expansionistas británicos. Así pues, argumento que una mirada detenida sobre la gestación del olimpismo moderno en la obra de Coubertin es indispensable para retirar del deporte actual todos esos valores que promueven la exclusión, particularmente de los grupos subrepresentados. The ?values of sport? is a concept that is often used to justify actions and policies by a range of agents and agencies from coaches and teachers to governing bodies and educational institutions. From a philosophical point of view, these values deserve to be analysed with great care to make sure we understand their nature and reach. The aim of this paper is to critically examine the values carried by the educational conception of sport that Pierre de Coubertin (...) developed and to see how they relate to certain values in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. To be able to understand in depth the moral construct of de Coubertin's system, it is essential to delve into the entire system he builds in order to develop athletic participants closer to his ideal of what a human should be. This in turn rests on his conception of Man, which is comprised of body, spirit and character. An understanding of his structure opens the way to a broader awareness of de Coubertin's educational system, of which sport was only part. We will then see that the values are a consequence of this pedagogical search for the ideal human. It is argued that this ideal of a human is similar to the one described by Nietzsche as the Übermensch . A philosophical case study is conducted, taking as its object the story of the first recipient of the Pierre de Coubertin medal, which rewards fair play among Olympic competitors. Judging the story through Nietzschean eyes allows for his thoughts to be put into practice. His lesser-known texts such as Homer and Competition on the emulation of creative powers shed light on today's sports. Concepts such as guilt, excellence, will to power and effectiveness help us compare these two authors and understand that competition is not necessarily about dominating others, but more about generating human excellence. In the countries with a strong muslim immigration, the practice and the organization of Islam represent a national and international politica! stake. But this cult doesn't still obtain this state support and the questions concerning its organization are more complex than ever. Thelegislation is insufficient and its application almost non-existent. The debates on 'integrism' and hijab have confronted us with the problem of the integrating (...) role of Islam. The Belgian political world seems today to fear the influence of foreign countries on immigrants. All these factors throw light on the history and the present state of the Belgian legislation on the organization of the islamic cult, which this article analyses. (shrink)

Two populations are subdivided into two categories of individuals (hawks and doves). Individuals fight to have access to a resource which is necessary for their survival. Conflicts occur between individuals belonging to the same population and to different populations. We investigate the long term effects of the conflicts on the stability of the community. The modelis a set of ODE's with four variables corresponding to hawk and dove individuals of the two populations. Two time scales are considered. A fast time (...) scale is used to describe frequent encounters and fightings between individuals trying to monopolize the resource. A slow time scale is used for the demography and the long term effects of encounters. We use aggregation methods in order to reduce this model into a system of two ODE's only for the total densities of the two populations which is found to be a classical Lotka-Volterra competition model. We study different cases of proportions of hawks and doves in both populations on the global coexistence and the mutal exclusion of the two populations. Pure dove tactics in both populations are unstable. In cases of mixed hawk and dove in both populations, there is coexistence. Pure dove or mixed hawk-dove tactics in one population can coexist with pure hawks in the other one when the costs of fightings between hawks are large enough. (shrink)

Resumen:El artículo indaga en las causas antropológicas y filosóficas de la crisis ecológica actual. Postula que una causa fundamental es el dualismo moderno que contrapone naturaleza e historia. A través de diversos procesos de la modernidad como la consolidación de la historicidad junto a la idea de progreso, los cambios en la percepción del tiempo, la separación de espacio y tiempo, la disociación de la historia natural de la historia total, y el dualismo solipsista del cartesianismo, contribuyen en su conjunto (...) a constituir la modernidad como desvinculación y a la “historia” como matriz epistemológica predominante tanto para pensar la realidad como para intervenir en ella. Como un modo de superar esa sobrevaloración de la historia en décadas recientes parece asomar un nuevo principio, el “principio del cuidado” de la Tierra unido a la responsabilidad intrageneracional e intergeneracional como únicos caminos plausibles para enfrentar integralmente la grave crisis ecológica que nos afecta. Esta nueva ética del cuidado es inseparable de razones estrictamente teológicas que convocan a salvaguardar la Tierra como morada del Logos.Palabras clave: historia; progreso; desvinculación; responsabilidad; cuidado; ecología-integral. This article inquires whether or not religious beliefs are rational, that is to say, whether or not they can be rationally sustained. The point of the article is not to prove the existence of God, but rather simply to show whether or not religious language has real meaning. To do this, we shall examine the concept of belief in general. Then we shall look at religious beliefs in particular from two opposing points of view: on the one hand, from the (...) position of authors who claim that religious beliefs can in fact be sustained by rational evidence, and on the other hand, from the perspective of other authors who affirm that these beliefs cannot be rationally justified, because spiritual discourse refers to the ineffable, which deprives it of the means to verify or deny its propositions. En este texto reflexivo se compara algunos estados del arte sobre la didáctica y la enseñanza de la filosofía realizados fuera de Colombia en las últimas tres décadas. Después de la búsqueda en varias bases de datos y de consultar varios autores en el tema, solo se hallaron 8 estudios sistemáticos de revisión literatura: en Brasil, Estados Unidos, Francia, Nueva Zelanda e Inglaterra. El dato más relevante puede ser que en los textos hallados la didáctica de la filosofía no aparece (...) como categoría central en la reflexión e investigación sobre enseñanza de la filosofía. Asimismo, se ve claramente el interés de los pensadores anglófonos por la investigación empírica y cuantitativa sobre la filosofía para niños, sobre todo desde la perspectiva de Matthew Lipman, pero no la filosofía “tradicional” en la educación secundaria. Finalmente, parece que hace falta más investigación aplicada en centro y sur américa y más reflexión filosófica y pedagógica sobre la didáctica y enseñanza de la filosofía tradicional en los países anglófonos. An English translation of Pierre Bayle's posthumous last book, Entretiens de Maxime et de Themiste (1707), in which Bayle defends his skeptical position on the problem of the evil. This book is often cited and attacked by G.W. Leibniz in his Theodicy (1710). Over one hundred pages of original philosophical and historical material introduce the translation, providing it with context and establishing the work's importance.

En este artículo de reflexión se plantea que el concepto de ‘pensamiento crítico’ formulado por los pensadores del Movimiento de Pensamiento Crítico contiene un presupuesto que mina en gran medida su empresa: el movimiento asume que el pensador crítico desarrolla un autoconocimiento directo y transparente, lo que implicaría cuasi-infalibilidad. En la historia de la filosofía algunos pensadores han defendido esta posibilidad de un autoconocimiento directo e infalible, por ejemplo René Descartes y más recientemente Donald Davidson. Sin embargo, tal conocimiento parece (...) tener unos límites más o menos claros que no son tenidos en cuenta por los pensadores del MPC al formular su noción de pensamiento crítico, y debido a este presupuesto su proyecto filosófico e incluso pedagógico podría quedar sin fundamento. L'actualite du kantisme n'est plus a demontrer. Que l'on songe a l'ethique de la discussion, a la theorie de la justice, a la philosophie des relations internationales, au probleme des arguments dits transcendantaux ou encore a la theorie de l'experience esthetique, la pensee de Kant temoigne aujourd'hui d'une incontestable vigueur et d'une etonnante jeunesse. Cette contemporaneite de Kant se traduit par de multiples tentatives de dialogue avec cette oeuvre afin d'en degager la pertinence pour le debat actuel. L'oeuvre de (...) class='Hi'>Pierre Laberge a su repondre de maniere exemplaire a ses ordres de preoccupations dans l'etude de Kant. Les auteurs sollicites ont eu l'occasion de collaborer avec Pierre Laberge et lui rendent ici un hommage posthume. Ce recueil reflete ainsi cette double exigence d'actualiser le kantisme et d'en analyser les textes. (shrink)

Resumen El presente artículo investiga la visión de la presencia y ausencia de Dios en y después de Auschwitz en el pensamiento del filósofo judío Emmanuel Levinas (1906-1995). Analizando especialmente los escritos judíos del autor publicados en el período post-Auschwitz, tras el horror del Holocausto, se muestra cómo responde Dios al clamor de los inocentes y sufrientes estableciendo una relación adulta que respeta la libertad humana y funda una responsabilidad infinita. Se destaca que el vínculo entre Dios y el ser (...) humano es una relación mediada por la experiencia de fidelidad a la Toráh y que la revelación de Dios, esencialmente mandamiento, implica una obediencia insoslayable. En fin, subraya que el contenido fundamental de la revelación divina es el “no matarás”, esto es, promover y defender en toda circunstancia la vida integral de los otros y otras, ejerciendo la responsabilidad y procurando una auténtica justicia social. Abstract This article investigates the presence and absence of God in and after Auschwitz in the thought of the Jewish philosopher Emmanuel Levinas (1906-1995). Analyzing especially the author's Jewish writings published in the post-Auschwitz period, after the horror of the Holocaust, it shows how God responds to the cry of the innocent and suffering by establishing an adult relationship that respects human freedom and founds an infinite responsibility. The article emphasizes the bond between God and the human being, which is mediated by the experience of fidelity to the Torah, and that God's revelation, essentially a commandment, implies unavoidable obedience. Finally, it stresses that the critical content of divine revelation is "thou shalt not kill," to promote and defend the integral life of others in all circumstances, exercising responsibility and striving for authentic social justice. Resumen El presente artículo investiga los fundamentos creacionales del mesianismo en el pensamiento del pensador judío Emmanuel Levinas. Revisando diversos escritos judíos y filosóficos del autor se muestra que el ser humano, creado a partir de la nada, separado, soberano en su dependencia, está convo cado a ser responsable y a promover la vida de los demás, sustituyendo, incluso, a los otros, poniéndose en su lugar, asumiendo sus pesares y dolores, haciéndo se cargo de ese modo del sufrimiento universal. Con (...) todo, para Levinas el “yo” es quien está llamado a asumir su singular vocación mesiánica, a afirmar “heme aquí”. Y este mismo Yo es aquel, que antes de toda decisión, ha sido elegido para soportar toda la responsabilidad del Mundo y en consecuencia es el llamado a ser “Mesías”.This article investigates the creationalfoundations of messianism in the thought of the Jewish thinker Emmanuel Levinas. Reviewing various Jewish andphilosophical writ- ings of the author it is shown that the human being, created from nothingg, separated, sovereign in his dependence, is summoned to be responsible and promote the lives of others, even replac- ing others, putting himself in hisplace, assuming his sorrows andpains, thereby taking charge of universal suffering. However, for Levinas the “I” is the one who is called to assume his singular messianic vocation, to affirm “here I am”. And this same “I” is the one who, before any decision, has been chosen to bear all the responsibility of the World and conse- quently is the call to be “Messiah”. (shrink)
