Avec l'extension du domaine du risque, consecutive aux avancees technologiques de tous ordres et a l'amplification des echanges a l'echelle planetaire, chacun porte desormais une responsabilite etendue, dans l'espace et le temps. Cette situation inedite, generatrice de nouveaux questionnements ethiques, met en lumiere un paradoxe: bien qu'essentielle dans un tel contexte, la notion de responsabilite semble avoir perdu de son sens et de sa clarte, comme dissimulee derriere la multiplicite de ses occurrences. Il devient ainsi decisif d'interroger a nouveau ce (...) concept: qu'est-ce que la responsabilite? Comment prendre une decision responsable face aux dilemmes moraux, juridiques, economiques, environnementaux, politiques, sociaux et societaux? « L’article se propose d’analyser l’exploitation musicale et théorique d’une figure sonore empruntée au rock et à certaines de ces sonorités, celle de l’« excès », par les compositeurs saturationnistes. Il montre l’ambiguïté de cette référence, l’emprunt d’une notion issue de la musique populaire phonographique conduisant, non à une remise en question de la séparation savant / populaire, comme on aurait pu le penser, mais au contraire au renforcement de cette séparation. Après être revenu sur les caractéristiques de la musique (...) saturationniste telles qu’elles sont définies par les compositeurs qui s’en sont réclamés dans les années 2000-2010 (Franck Bedrossian, Raphaël Cendo, Yann Robin), l’auteur montre qu’elles ont surtout pour fonction de mettre à distance toute référence au rock au profit d’un travail sur le timbre, s’inscrivant dans une histoire du bruit et plus largement dans la tradition savante. Ce faisant, est ignorée la manière spécifique dont l’excès est mis en œuvre dans le rock, dont sont donnés quelques traits fondamentaux, concernant aussi bien les sonorités de son instrumentarium que son fonctionnement par plateaux d’intensité. En dernière analyse, l’auteur montre comment la notion d’« excès », en tant qu’elle constitue chez les saturationnistes un principe d’écriture musicale, ne permet pas, comme on pourrait le croire au premier abord, une remise en question des normes esthético-historiques définissant le savant, mais travaille au maintien de la hiérarchie savant / populaire, interdisant de ce fait de comprendre le savoir tacite qui se déploie dans le populaire, ici plus précisément la musique rock. ». Avant la parution des Lettres philosophiques de Voltaire, chaque grande famille intellectuelle examine la production pascalienne selon une perspective traditionelle. Après la XXV Lettre, où s'affrontent deux morales, deux épistémologies, deux conceptions de Dieu, le regard sur Pascal perd de son unité. Certes, parmi les écrivains des Lumières, l'anthropologie pascalienne est condamnée: la valorisation de l'amour propre, la croyance en l'idée de nature, le souci, le souci de bienfaisance, l'esprit de tolérance, le concept d'utilité, la foi dans le progrès et (...) l'éfficacité de l'action politique s'opposent au tragique pascalien. Mais certains auteurs, tel Vauvenargues, sont sensibles à l'esthétique de Pascal, tandis que d'autres, comme d'Alembert, vantent ses mérites scientifiques. Le paradoxe de la fortune pascalienne est surtout entretenu, dans le parti des Lumières, par l'orientation sceptique donnée aux fragments sur la coutume ou sur le désenchantement du monde. Conséquence du progrès de l'esprit 'philosophique', les apologistes, chez qui le sens du péché s'est atténué, défendent avec tiédeur Pascal, en oubliant progressivement la dimension théologique des Pensées et en orientant ce livre vers une interprétation profane: les preuves historiques tendent à passer au second plan. L'apologie traditionnelle reconnaît un rôle social au christianisme, parallèlement au concept d'utilité et de progrès qui imprègnent les consciences religieuses. Dans ce contexte, peu favorable á une bonne compréhension de la théologie pascalienne, les jésuites atténuent leurs critiques envers l'auteur des Provinciales, tandis que les jansénistes, à l'exemple de Louis Racine, se révèlent des disciples infidèles: les preuves métaphysiques, naturelles ou morales ne s'inscrivent pas dans la filiation pascalienne. Les défenseurs de la religion chrétienne restent étrangers au message pascalien. Condorcet, premier éditeur des Pensées depuis Port-Royal, opère une fracture saisissante entre le moraliste et l'apologiste jusqu'à enrôler Pascal dans le camps des athées. La fin du XVIIIe siècle est marquée par le renouveau d'une sensibilité religieuse, mais celle-ci reste éloignée de la thématique pascalienne. Seule la littérature, avec l'éloge de la mélancolie, la fascination pour la subjectivité, la reconnaissance du fragment, offre l'amorce d'une transformation du regard sur Pascal. En conclusion, il semble que l'auteur du dix-septième siècle ne soit compris ni par les philosophes ni par les apologistes, dont l'horizon intellectuelle est paradoxalement réuni par les critères de raison ou d'utilité. Leur rapport à l'oeuvre pascalienne ne se lit que sous la forme d'une stratégie des 'morceaux choisis'. Ce sujet a aussi souligné l'intérêt d'un débat toujours recommencé: le XX résonne encore de l'affrontement entre le doute et l'optimisme, entre une interrogation sur les valeurs et la foi dans le progrès, entre la dénonciation de la perte des sens et le pari sur l'histoire. Emphasis on autonomy of texts presupposes that there are perennial concepts. But researchers' expectations may turn history into mythology of ideas; researchers forget that an agent cannot be described as doing something he could not understand as a description, and that thinking may be inconsistent. They will never uncover voluntary oblique strategies and by treating ideas as units will confuse sentences with statements. On the other hand, a contextual approach to the meaning of texts dismisses ideas as unimportant effects. Neither (...) method shows how what was said was meant is crucial for understanding. There are no perennial problems; philosophers of different times do not speak directly to us. But history of ideas helps us recognize the contingency of many of our beliefs. (shrink)

The primary goal of Peter Ludlow's Semantics, Tense, and Time is to illustrate how one can study metaphysical issues from a linguistic/semantic perspective by addressing the debate between tenseless theorists and tensed theorists. Ludlow's book is noteworthy in part because of the novelty of its approach to this debate and in part because it addresses and endeavors to solve the metaphysical problems of temporal solipsism that other temporal solipsists have not addressed.

The relational interpretation of quantum mechanics proposes to solve the measurement problem and reconcile completeness and locality of quantum mechanics by postulating relativity to the observer for events and facts, instead of an absolute “view from nowhere”. The aim of this paper is to clarify this interpretation, and in particular, one of its central claims concerning the possibility for an observer to have knowledge about other observer’s events. I consider three possible readings of this claim, and develop the most promising (...) one, relativism, to show how it fares when confronted with the traditional interpretative problems of quantum mechanics. Callender and Cohen have proposed to apply a “Gricean strategy” to the constitution problem of scientific representation, taking inspiration from Grice’s reduction of linguistic meaning to mental states. They suggest that scientific representation can be reduced to stipulation by epistemic agents. This account has been criticised for not making a distinction between symbolic and epistemic representation and not taking into account the communal aspects of scientific representation. I argue that these criticisms would not apply if Grice’s actual strategy were properly (...) employed. I present Grice’s account of linguistic meaning and transpose his actual strategy and method to epistemic representation. This results in a reduction of epistemic representation to mental states that does not fall prey to the same criticisms. The main novelty of the resulting account is a distinction between contextual representational use and general representational status, which I address using the notion of indexicality. (shrink)

More generally, Modal Empiricism purports to be the precise articulation of a pragmatist stance towards science. Although the principle of respect for personal autonomy has been the subject of debate for almost 40 years, the conversation has often suffered from lack of clarity regarding the philosophical traditions underlying this principle. In this article, I trace a genealogy of autonomy, first contrasting Kant’s autonomy as moral obligation and Mill’s teleological political liberty. I then show development from Mill’s concept to Beauchamp and Childress’ principle and to Julian Savulescu’s non-teleological autonomy sketch. I argue that, although the reach for (...) a new principle to guide choices in physician–patient relationships can rightfully be seen as important, the notion that is now called autonomy within bioethics has corollaries that undermine critical aspects of medical care. As such, there is need for a richer account of the interplay between the free choice of patients and the informed recommendations of doctors. (shrink)

This is a critical history of analytic philosophy from its inception in the late-19th century to the present day. The book focuses on the connections between the four leading movements in the field - logical realism, logical positivism, ordinary language analysis and linguistic essentialism.

We propose a construct, the Trust Triangle, that highlights three primary mechanisms that provide ex post accountability for opportunistic behavior and motivate ex ante trust in economic relationships. The mechanisms are a society’s legal and regulatory framework, market-based discipline and reputational capital, and culture, including individual ethics and social norms. The Trust Triangle provides a framework to conceptualize the relationships between trust, corporate accountability, legal liability, reputation, and culture. We use the Trust Triangle to summarize recent developments in the empirical (...) finance literature that examine how trust is formed and how trust, or its absence, affects financial markets, firm performance, and the incidence of financial fraud. To date, most studies examine only one leg of the Trust Triangle in isolation. The evidence, however, indicates that all three legs of the Trust Triangle have first-order effects on a wide range of financial outcomes and that they are interrelated. Attempts to model trust and trustworthiness that do not incorporate all three aspects of the Trust Triangle will therefore miss essential aspects of the basic economic problem of how counterparties overcome the risks of moral hazard, asymmetric information, and opportunism to engage in mutually beneficial exchange and production activities. We focus especially on culture-related mechanisms, a recently developed area in empirical finance research that has potential to influence the more established research on laws and reputation. There is sufficient evidence at present to justify the belief that the universe began to exist without being caused to do so. This evidence includes the Hawking-Penrose singularity theorems that are based on Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, and the recently introduced Quantum Cosmological Models of the early universe. The singularity theorems lead to an explication of the beginning of the universe that involves the notion of a Big Bang singularity, and the Quantum Cosmological Models represent the beginning largely in (...) terms of the notion of a vacuum fluctuation. Theories that represent the universe as infinitely old or as caused to begin are shown to be at odds with or at least unsupported by these and other current cosmological notions. (shrink)

Structural realism has been suggested as the best compromise in the debate on scientific realism. It proposes that we should be realist about the relational structure of the world, not its nature. However, it faces an important objection, first raised by Newman against Russell: if relations are not qualified, then the position is either trivial or collapses into empiricism, but if relations are too strongly qualified, then it is no longer SR. A way to overcome this difficulty is to talk (...) about modal, or nomological relations instead of purely extensional relations. I argue that this is insufficient, for then, SR collapses into modal empiricism. Accounts of scientific representation typically assume that there is a single sense of “represent”, and they attempt to develop a theory that can account for all its features. The aim of this article is to draw the consequences of a distinction between two senses of “represent” that has been proposed recently. Taking inspiration from the distinction between speaker-meaning and expression-meaning in philosophy of language, a first sense is analysed in terms of the mental states of the user of a vehicle (...) in context, and a second sense in terms of communal norms constraining contextual uses. I argue that making this distinction, and thus understanding the representation relation as essentially indexical and normative, can help us move beyond the controversies between various accounts of scientific representation, notably what have been dubbed informational and functional accounts, as well as debates regarding the ontology of scientific models.
