The Cycle of Violence and Feminist Constructions of Selfhood.Jennifer L. Rike - 1996 - Contagion: Journal of Violence, Mimesis, and Culture 3 (1):21-42.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:The Cycle of Violence and Feminist Constructions of Selfhood Jennifer L. Rike University ofDetroit Mercy Violence is the heart and secret soul ofthe sacred" (Girard 1977, 31). René Girard reaches this shocking conclusion by tracing the dynamics ofthe generation ofviolence in history, and the ingenious ways in which humanity has learned to funnel violence into ritual sacrifice to avoid apocalypse. His argument pivots upon his understanding ofhumanity as (...)

From rent-seeking to rent-producing: explaining Cargill’s strategy to control value chains by proliferating links within them.Anthony Pahnke - forthcoming - Agriculture and Human Values:1-15.
Agribusiness corporations primarily involved in providing livestock feed—colloquially known as the “ABCD” (Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), Bunge, Cargill, and the Louis Dreyfus Company)—have begun to enter the fishing industry around the world. I argue that this recent entry of agribusiness multinationals in aquaculture, focusing particularly on Cargill, arises to take advantage of strategic opportunities to proliferate, or create links with respect to feed production and development within value chains. Concerning such opportunities, as I document, Cargill first leveraged its access to (...)

    Der rational turn.Rike Sinder - 2022 - Archiv für Rechts- und Sozialphilosophie 108 (2):163-190.
The prevailing notion of natural law is generally seen to have originated either in Plato or in Aristotle and is then being traced through Thomas Aquinas to modern times. In this narrative, all conceptions of natural law share a common function: they are standard-setting. They (at least partly) determine, legitimise and limit positive law. However, this standard-setting (and mostly: rational) natural law gained a rather late victory over an older, more teleological and oft-forgotten concept of natural law: Aristotle’s physikon dikaion (...)

  6. Radical Pluralism and Truth.Werner G. Jeanrond, Jennifer L. Rike, John Kekes, Richard Mouw, Sanders Griffoen & Gene Outka - 1996 - Journal of Religious Ethics 24 (2):403-428.
Recent discussions of religious, cultural, and/or moral diversity raise questions relevant to the descriptive and normative aims of students of religious ethics. In conversation with several illustrative works, the author takes up issues of terminology, explanations or classifications of types and origins of plurality and pluralism, the relations between pluralism as a normative theory and the aims of a liberal state, and the import of an emphasis on plurality or pluralism for the comparative study of religious ethics.

    Mysticism and Drugs.J. Kellenberger - 1978 - Religious Studies 14 (2):175 - 191.
In recent years the issue of whether mysticism can be induced by drugs has been pursued by both scholars of mystical literature and psychological researchers. R. C. Zaehner is perhaps the best known among the scholars of religious literature who have addressed the issues of drug-induced mysticism. While on the side of empirical psychology investigators such as Walter N. Pahnke, R. E. L. Masters, and Jean Houston have pursued some of the same issues using the techniques of laboratory experimentation. (...)

This piece, included in the drift special issue of continent. , was created as one step in a thread of inquiry. While each of the contributions to drift stand on their own, the project was an attempt to follow a line of theoretical inquiry as it passed through time and the postal service(s) from October 2012 until May 2013. This issue hosts two threads: between space & place and between intention & attention . The editors recommend that to experience the (...)

Acute Religious Experiences: Madness, Psychosis and Religious Studies.Richard Saville-Smith - 2023 - London: Bloomsbury Advances in Religio.
How do we explain the coincidence of religion and madness in which prophets, founders of religions and great saints often show symptoms of an excitability that is extreme and even pathological? This book attempts to address this phenomenological problem. Richard Saville-Smith argues that 'acute religious experiences' provides a novel category to the study of the non-rational. This book provides an epidemiological approach to a crisis, which is non-veridical and non-reductionist, recognizing a predisposition due to gene variation as a perennial constant, (...)
