By means of a close reading of a single prayer on the Passion of Christ from the 14th century ‘Engelberg Prayerbook,’ this article analyzes three characteristic effects of reading medieval written prayers: first, the devotee assumes the role of the I constructed by the text. Secondly, this leads to an effect of immersion into a literarily constructed, imagined environment. Finally, these effects of reading aim at being surpassed by an immediacy of a divine answer that transcends the aesthetic and semantic (...) effects of the literary medium. (shrink)

What Do the Data Tell Us? Justification of scientific theories is a three-place relation between data, theories, and background knowledge. Though this should be a commonplace, many methodologies in science neglect it. The article will elucidate the significance and function of our background knowledge in epistemic justification and their consequences for different scientific methodologies. It is argued that there is no simple and at the same time acceptable statistical algorithm that justifies a given theory merely on the basis of certain (...) data. And even if we think to know the probability of a theory, that does not decide whether we should accept it or not. (shrink)

Searles influential speech act theory precludes or explaining saying truely as doings, iE. speciftcly as linguistic actions.An adequate explanation of speech acts must treat linguistic meaning of expression type and the speakers intentions, beliefs and desires as seperate, but coordinate factors in the performance (...) and understanding of linguistic acts. Cet article vise à élucider la caractérisation que Franz Rosenzweig propose, dans « La pensée nouvelle », de son grand œuvre publié en 1921. D’après l’essai de 1925, L’Étoile de la Rédemption reposerait en effet sur une « méthode du langage » elle-même identifiée à, ou placée sous la dépendance d’une méthode fondée sur la temporalité. Nous cherchons à comprendre le sens de ces expressions en retraçant le rôle que jouent dans L’Étoile les différentes formes de la parole, pour dévoiler (...) la relation temporelle qui, au moyen d’une structure qualifiée de « prophétique », unit le langage véritable et ce qui le précède ou l’excède. Nous montrons que s’élabore ainsi une théorie du signe qui éclaire la structure de l’ouvrage et l’originalité de sa contribution à la pensée, entre l’exploration des sources juives et l’horizon idéaliste de l’interrogation philosophique. Die henologische Metaphysik ist das Herzstück der Philosophie Plotins. Als Neuplatoniker vertritt Plotin emphatisch die strikte Transzendenz des (über)göttlichen Einen. Das höchste Prinzip, das nach plotinischem Verständnis "jenseits von allem" steht, kann weder denkend noch sprachlich erfasst werden, sondern ist "wahrhaft unsagbar". Dennoch spricht Plotin in nahezu jeder seiner 54 Schriften über das Eine und gebraucht dabei eine Vielfalt von Aussageformen - Negationen, Analogien und vereinzelt auch positive Zuschreibungen. Diese Spannung verlangt nach einer Erklärung. Benedikt Krämer unternimmt in seiner Dissertation (...) erstmals in monographischer Form eine umfassende Untersuchung der verschiedenen theologischen Sprechweisen aus historischer und systematischer Perspektive. In einem ersten Schritt wird die Entwicklung der theologischen Sprechweisen in der mittelplatonischen Philosophie ausgehend von ihren Anknüpfungspunkten in Platons Schriften betrachtet. Anschließend erfolgt die Untersuchung der theologischen Formen in Plotins Enneaden. Dabei wird zum einen geklärt, wie Plotin die Sprechweisen, die sich im Mittelplatonismus vor dem Hintergrund einer????-Theologie entwickeln, für seine henologische Metaphysik adaptiert. Zum anderen wird die Funktion der verschiedenen theologischen Formen im Rahmen plotinischen Philosophierens beleuchtet. (shrink)
