This study examined narrative identity in a group of 81 patients with schizophrenia and 50 healthy controls through the recall of self-defining memories. The results indicated that patients’ narratives were less coherent and elaborate than those of controls. Schizophrenia patients were severely impaired in the ability to make connections with the self and extract meaning from their memories, which significantly correlated with illness duration. In agreement with earlier research, patients exhibited an early reminiscence bump. Moreover, the period of the reminiscence (...) bump, which is highly relevant for identity development, was characterized by fewer achievements and more life-threatening event experiences, compared with controls. A negative correlation was found between negative symptoms, number of self-event connections and specificity of narratives. This thought-provoking book discusses the concept of progress in economics and investigates whether any advance has been made in its different spheres of research. The authors look back at the history, successes and failures of their respective fields and thoroughly examine the notion of progress from an epistemological and methodological perspective. This book identifies the criteria for successful constitutions in both theory and practice using the research and methodology of Vincent Ostrom.

An argument with roots in ancient Greek philosophy claims that only humans are capable of a certain class of thought termed conceptual, as opposed to perceptual thought, which is common to humans, the higher animals, and some machines. We outline the most detailed modern version of this argument due to Mortimer Adler, who in the 1960s argued for the uniqueness of the human power of conceptual thought. He also admitted that if conceptual thought were ever manifested by machines, such an (...) achievement would contradict his conclusion. We revisit Adler’s criterion in the light of the past five decades of artificial-intelligence research, and refine it in view of the classical definitions of perceptual and conceptual thought. We then examine two well-publicized examples of creative works produced by AI systems and show that evidence for conceptual thought appears to be lacking in them. Although clearer evidence for conceptual thought on the part of AI systems may arise in the near future, especially if the global neuronal workspace theory of consciousness prevails over its rival, integrated information theory, the question of whether AI systems can engage in conceptual thought appears to be still open. A comprehensive understanding of participants’ motives to complete web-based surveys has the potential to improve data quality. In this study we tested the construct validity of a scale developed to measure motivation to participate in webbased surveys. We expected that 7 different motivations observed in our previous study will form a 3-factor structure, as predicted by Self-Determination Theory. This web-based questionnaire study comprised 257 participants completing the Voluntary Participation in Online Studies Scale. Their responses to 21 items underwent a principal (...) component analysis and confi rmatory factor analysis. As we expected, three factors were identifi ed: intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation and amotivation. In line with Self-Determination Theory there are three distinct groups of motives among web-surveys participants with amotivation as an understudied motivational state. We discuss the results suggesting which types of motivation might lead to higher quality of data with an emphasis on possible negative effects of amotivation. (shrink)

Background Levels of care deemed as inappropriate generate moral distress among nurses and other intensive care professionals. Inappropriate levels of care and related moral distress are frequently broached as individual and psychological phenomena, reduced to how individuals feel and think about specific cases. However, this tends to obscure the complex context in which these situations occur, and on which healthcare professionals can act. There is thus a need for a more contextual and team-level lens on inappropriate levels of care. Research (...) objective This study aims to explore and understand the issue of inappropriate levels of care in an intensive care unit (ICU) through a contextual and team-level lens. Research design Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nurses, respiratory therapists, and intensivists. Thematic analysis focused on understanding the causes and consequences of inappropriate levels of care, as well as potential avenues for improvement. This study is part of a 5-phase participatory living lab project on inappropriate levels of care conducted in the ICU of a Montreal (Quebec, Canada) hospital. This paper relates the initial phases of the project, focusing on understanding the issue, with reported events spanning from June 2022 to May 2023. Ethical considerations Ethics approval was sought and granted by the Research Ethics Board of the CIUSSS de l’Est-de-l’Île-de-Montréal. Findings/Discussion Five broad themes intrinsically related to the phenomenon of inappropriate levels of care were explored with and by participants: (1) the process of determining levels of care, (2) the distinction between appropriate and inappropriate levels of care, (3) causes of inappropriate levels of care, (4) consequences of inappropriate levels of care and (5) potential avenues for improvement. Conclusion This research provides a comprehensive understanding of inappropriate levels of care in the ICU and emphasizes the relevance of team-level explorations of complex ethical issues. (shrink)

In this article, the authors bring two personal journeys together: one author’s liberationist journey, sparked by a search for justice and liberation in the slums of Guatemala City, and the other’s lifelong commitment to practical theology and spatial justice in South Africa. A practical theology of liberation is the result of life experiences in countries of the Global South amidst the search for justice and liberation. The worlds that come together in this article are René Girard’s mimetic theory, liberation theology (...) and practical theology. This article raises the question of the cross-contextuality of practical theology and the theological application of mimetic theory to develop innovative theological methodologies that respond to the collective woundedness of the urban context in the Global South.Contribution: The main contribution of this article is the use of three seemingly different theological approaches in conjunction. BackgroundInnovations in technology have contributed to rapid changes in the way that modern biomedical research is carried out. Researchers are increasingly required to endorse adaptive and flexible approaches to accommodate these innovations and comply with ethical, legal and regulatory requirements. This paper explores how Dynamic Consent may provide solutions to address challenges encountered when researchers invite individuals to participate in research and follow them up over time in a continuously changing environment.MethodsAn interdisciplinary workshop jointly organised by the University of Oxford (...) and the COST Action CHIP ME gathered clinicians, researchers, ethicists, lawyers, research participants and patient representatives to discuss experiences of using Dynamic Consent, and how such use may facilitate the conduct of specific research tasks. The data collected during the workshop were analysed using a content analysis approach.ResultsDynamic Consent can provide practical, sustainable and future-proof solutions to challenges related to participant recruitment, the attainment of informed consent, participant retention and consent management, and may bring economic efficiencies.ConclusionsDynamic Consent offers opportunities for ongoing communication between researchers and research participants that can positively impact research. Dynamic Consent supports inter-sector, cross-border approaches and large scale data-sharing. Whilst it is relatively easy to set up and maintain, its implementation will require that researchers re-consider their relationship with research participants and adopt new procedures. (shrink)

Du moment où, en juin 1934, se noue entre eux une relation amoureuse et jusqu’à leur mariage en août 1937, les ethnologues Denise Paulme et André Schaeffner entretiennent une correspondance régulière. Si les lettres d’André Schaeffner n’ont pas été retrouvées, celles de Denise Paulme constituent une source essentielle pour observer les débuts d’une carrière scientifique féminine dans l’entre-deux-guerres. Elles nous révèlent que l’expérience de terrain, désormais située au cœur du parcours de l’ethnologue professionnel, a permis à Denise Paulme d’asseoir les (...) bases d’une légitimité qui ne lui était pas acquise. Mais elles mettent également en évidence la nécessité, pour une femme, de penser conjointement sa vie affective et sa vie scientifique, pour conquérir une place dans celle de ces deux vies où elle n’était pas attendue. À partir d’un corpus d’enregistrements de répliques de la pièce de Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire, cet article traite de la phonologie des énoncés exclamatifs. Il établit que les spécificités phonologiques essentielles des exclamations sont de nature suprasegmentale et se trouvent être observées au niveau intonatif. Après avoir identifié certaines caractéristiques récurrentes des contours mélodiques observés dans les énoncés exclamatifs et montré que celles-ci sont conditionnées par la motivation sémantique et l’iconicité de l’intonation, nous nous intéressons aux liens indirects (...) qui existent entre l’intonation des exclamations et l’expression du degré. Nous fondant sur une réflexion sur la fonction démarcative de l’intonation et la valeur illocutoire des énoncés exclamatifs, nous suggérons également que l’étude de l’intonation des exclamations est susceptible d’éclairer la notion d’acte d’énonciation en contexte d’interaction orale. Résumé Dans certaines situations, les comportements réels des individus peuvent apparaître comme des anomalies dans le cadre de la théorie classique de l’agent rationnel. La théorie comportementale vise à expliquer ces anomalies, en particulier celles relatives aux préférences sociales. L’objet de cet article est de montrer comment l’économie expérimentale a permis de mieux mesurer et de mieux caractériser ces préférences. Dans la vaste production philosophique d'Ibn Arabi (1165-1240), "Le livre des théophanies" condense l'essentiel de la doctrine de l'union mystique du métaphysicien soufiste, en une centaine de brèves visions qui sont autant d'éclairages ponctuels sur les stations et les arcanes de la connaissance divine.

La raison d'État de la Renaissance émerge à partir de la transformation de l'ordre juridique médiéval. Sur les ruines du droit naturel, s'affirme une première raison d'État qui se revendique comme un droit fondé dans la nécessité. À l'opposé, le traité Della Ragione di Stato de Giovanni Botero refonde l'ordre juridique pour maîtriser cette nécessité. La raison d'État botérienne se rattache ainsi à un mouvement général de reconstruction de l'ordre juridique, auquel participent Machiavel ou Bodin.

L'article explicite un certain nombre de principes de nature à rendre possible une connaissance à la fois critique et positive de la communication d'entreprise. Il souligne la nécessité de rompre tant avec les modèles sociologiques et économiques usuels qu'avec les lieux communs et les discours d'acteurs qui ne visent souvent que leur propre promotion. La notion d’un corps intermédiaire, connu sous le nom de véhicule de l’âme dans le néoplatonisme, est destinée à expliquer l’union de l’âme et du corps, mais aussi l’articulation du rationnel et de l’irrationnel, les communications avec le divin, et le maintien d’une forme de vie post mortem. Cette étude montre comment les premières attestations d’un usage structuré de la notion, sous la forme « le pneuma est le (premier) véhicule de l’âme », apparaissent dans deux contextes différents, fort éloignés (...) l’un de l’autre : une discussion de physiologie sur le pneuma optique, chez Galien ; et une explicitation philosophique de l’eschatologie d’Homère, dans le De Homero du Pseudo-Plutarque. Ce sont cependant les témoins les plus clairs d’une doctrine qui est encore en gestation dans le platonisme impérial. L’analyse montre en particulier ce que le médecin doit au Timée de Platon, ce que l’allégoriste doit à la théorie médicale des exhalaisons du sang, quand ils formulent cette nouvelle hypothèse commune sur la nature du pneuma, appuyée sur Platon et Aristote, et manifestement présentée comme une alternative à la doctrine stoïcienne de l’âme-pneuma. Résumé — Au début du traité Della ragione di Stato, Boreto déclare son opposition résolue au machiavélisme. Il récuse en effet une conception de la raison d’État fondée sur l’immoralisme, sur la transgression répétée des commandements divins. Mais Botero ne prône pas un simple retour à une fondation théologique du politique. Il reprend plutôt à son compte, sous le nom de raison d’État, une conception du politique délivrée de toute relation à la moralité transcendante venue de Dieu, une conception amorale (...) telle que Machiavel l’envisageait déjà. Et dans cette perspective il introduit la distinction entre raison d’État ordinaire et raison d’État extraordinaire et prétend montrer de quelle manière une raison d’État ordinaire, pourtant conduite par le seul désir de domination, peut employer des moyens tout à fait compatibles avec les exigences de la morale chrétienne.— At the beginning of the treatise Della ragione di Stato, Botero claims his determined opposition to Machiavellism. He impugns any notion of the reason of State that would be based on immorality, that is on constant transgression of God’s prescriptions. But Botero doesn’t advocate the return to a theological foundation of politics. He uses the expression ragione di Stato to denote a notion of politics released from every relation to transcendent morality coming from God, an amoral notion that Machiavelli was already contemplating. In this matter, it is necessary to distinguish the ordinary from the extraordinary reason of State, because Botero shows how an ordinary reason of State, even looking for the only domination, is able to work in a way which is in full accordance with Christian morality. Most current criticisms against the intervention in Iraq have tackled the two justifications articulated by the members of the coalition: that the United States had to neutralize the threats that Iraq generated for their own security and to the political stability in the Middle Eastand that the war in Iraq can be justified as a necessary stage in the war against international terrorism. The principal objection against justification is that it was, and remains, unfounded. Against justification, many have replied that (...) the intervention in Iraq had no connection,or at best had merely an indirect connection, with the fight against terrorism. In a recent text,Fernando Tesón claims that the American intervention in Iraq can nevertheless be morally justified as a case of humanitarian intervention. By “humanitarian intervention”, one must understand a coercive action taken by a state or a group of states inside the sphere of jurisdiction of an independent political community, without the permission of the latter, in order to preventor to end a massive violation of individual rights perpetrated against innocent persons which are not co-nationals inside this political community. I argue in this article that the American intervention in Iraq does not satisfy the conditions of a legitimate humanitarian intervention, as opposed to what Fernando Tesón claims. (shrink)
