Ritualism and disempowerment of education: social semiotics of the educational experience of young Iranian girls.Mahdi Kermani & Zahra Baradarankashani - 2023 - Semiotica 2023 (253):169-191.
Despite recent noticeable changes in women’s educational opportunities in developing countries such as Iran, there is still much controversy surrounding the common assumption that a direct relationship exists between women’s empowerment and formal literacy. According to the social semiotic method, the present research explores the hidden side of the female educational experience and its relationship with empowerment. In the current study, we conducted 39 interviews and analyzed the collected data using Van Leeuwen’s semiotic approach. The results are based on the (...)

Sonic soma: sound, body and the origins of the alphabet.Elise Kermani - 2009 - New York: Atropos Press.
Kermani traces the history of mankind from the origins of society and language to the present, and un-mutes the silence that resulted from the moment man began to write his history instead of listening to history's story.

The Terror of God: Attar, Job and the Metaphysical Revolt.Navid Kermani - 2011 - Malden, MA: Polity.
How can suffering and injustice be reconciled with the idea that God is good, that he loves humans and is merciful to them? Job's question runs through the history of the three monotheistic religions. Time and again, philosophers, theologians, poets, prophets and laypersons have questioned their image of God in the light of a reality full of hardship. Some see suffering as proof of God's existence, others as a demonstration that there can be no God, while others still respond by (...)

A Comparative Study of Nonsingular Terminal Sliding Mode and Backstepping Schemes for the Coupled Two-Tank System.Safa Choueikh, Marwen Kermani & Faouzi M’Sahli - 2021 - Complexity 2021:1-18.
This paper presents an implementation of two radically different control schemes for a state-coupled two-tank liquid-level system. This is due to the purpose of transferring theoretical studies to industrial systems. The proposed schemes to be introduced and compared are the nonsingular terminal sliding mode control and the backstepping control. The performances of the developed methods are experimentally tested on a particular class of second-order nonlinear systems. The main purpose of the considered control schemes is to achieve a tracking trajectory for (...)

Mapping Persian Twitter: Networks and mechanism of political communication in Iranian 2017 presidential election.Marzieh Adham & Hossein Kermani - 2021 - Big Data and Society 8 (1).
This paper investigates the structure of networked publics and their sharing practices in Persian Twitter during a period surrounding Iran’s 2017 presidential election. Building on networked gatekeeping and framing theories, we used a mixed methodological approach to analyze a dataset of 2,596,284 Persian tweets. Results revealed that Twitter provided a space for Iranians to discuss public topics. However, this space is not necessarily used by voiceless and marginalized groups; and the uses are not limited to discussing controversial issues. The growing (...)

Das Böse: drei Annäherungen.Ingolf U. Dalferth, Karl Lehmann & Navid Kermani (eds.)

Introducing Bayani Kermani and the Manuscripts of His Monsha'at.Asraossadat Ahmadi, Hossein Aghahosseini & Seyyed Aliasghar Mirbagherifard - 2013 - Asian Culture and History 5 (2):p158.
Reviving the works of Persian Empire’s writers and grandees, both in terms of the newly discovered points in books and discourses and also including indications of their era’s social, political and cultural state, is highly essential and valuable; so much so that if no efforts are made on their correction and restoration, a vast part of this extremely rich cultural heritage will be buried among the manuscripts. It is incumbent on the scientific community to take steps, however brief, in order (...)

The Role of Istanbul-Resident Iranians in the Development of Pan-Islamism Ideology (Case Study: Mirza Agha Khan Kermani & Sheikh Ahamad Rouhi).Ghaffar Abdollahi Matanaq, Loqman Dehghan Niyeri & Asghar Foroughi Abari - 2013 - Asian Culture and History 5 (2):p128.
In the 2nd half of nineteenth century, when the Pan-Islamism ideology as the way out of Islamic world’s straits was formed in the mind of some Islamic world’s thinkers, some of Iranian thinkers joined the issue, as well. Mostly influenced by the ideologies particularly were Istanbul-resident Iranians intellectuals and thinkers who, oppressed by authoritarians of Iran, had taken refuge in Istanbul and started living there. Among them, Mirza Agha Khan Kermani and his inseparable fellow, Sheikh Ahmad Rouhi, had an (...)
