The dark and bright side of the numbers: how emotions influence mental number line accuracy and bias.Saied Sabaghypour, Farhad Farkhondeh Tale Navi, Elena Kulkova, Parnian Abaduz, Negin Zirak & Mohammad Ali Nazari - 2024 - Cognition and Emotion 38 (5):661-674.
The traditional view of cognition as detached from emotions is recently being questioned. This study aimed to investigate the influence of emotional valence on the accuracy and bias in the representation of numbers on the mental number line (MNL). The study included 164 participants who were randomly assigned into two groups with induced positive and negative emotional valence using matched arousal film clips. Participants performed a computerised number-to-position (CNP) task to estimate the position of numbers on a horizontal line. The (...)

    The Navy's “Sophisticated” Pursuit of Science.Jacob Darwin Hamblin - 2002 - Isis 93 (1):1-27.
Although it often chafed at scientists' wishes to promote international cooperation, the U.S. Navy was a great supporter of such initiatives during the 1950s. This essay examines the impetus for the Navy's alliance with scientists to bolster its antisubmarine capabilities, the reasons for its acceptance of international cooperation as a means to ensure its technological capabilities during a general war, and the source of its clashes with scientists over the issue of classification. Using diverse sources, including the records (...)

    Polskie badania nad Polonikami w Navis Peregrinorum (1561–1695).Olgierd Lenczewski - 2024 - Rocznik Filozoficzny Ignatianum 30 (3):177-190.

Describing the Seas: Writing Practices of the Masters of the Royal Navy in the Long Eighteenth Century. The masters of the Royal Navy in the long eighteenth century are usually associated more with practical knowledge and experience than with an involvement with learned or ‚book‘ knowledge. However, their professional practices were based to a high degree on the usage and production of texts. This article examines how literary practices shaped the production of hydrographic knowledge by masters, in how (...)

    A Career in the Navy (Arist. Knights 541–4).Dwora Gilula - 1989 - Classical Quarterly 39 (01):259-.
Aristophanes' description of the stages of promotion in the Athenian navy recently received renewed attention, when Mastromarco and Halliwell enlisted it in their battle against the traditional opinion that Aristophanes' early career fell into two stages, a secret one of writing plays but not producing them, and a public one in which he undertook both activities. Mastromarco argues for a tripartite career, and Halliwell, who is against a too strict correlation, for a gradual development, a sort of a complex (...)

This study examined the mediating role of meaning in life in the effect of calling on posttraumatic stress disorder and posttraumatic growth among navy soldiers of the Republic of Korea deployed to the Gulf of Aden, Somalia. Participants responded to the questionnaire survey three times at 4-month intervals. From the first, second, and third surveys, data were collected for 223, 195, and 103 respondents, respectively. Results showed that calling had a negative effect on PTSD, fully mediated by meaning in (...)

Remarks on the History of the Navy of the Empire of Nicaea in the Light of the Chronicle of Georgios Akropolites.Marcin Böhm - 2016 - International Letters of Social and Humanistic Sciences 74:54-57.
Publication date: 30 November 2016 Source: Author: Marcin Böhm The Empire of Nicaea was a successor of the Byzantium shattered in 1204. In the newly established state marine traditions of Byzantines, remain alive. The best testimony to this, are the evidence contained in the chronicle of Georgios Akropolites, devoted to activities of the rulers of Nicaea, aimed to build their own naval forces. In this paper I'll also try to answer, where was beating the heart of the Nicean shipbuilding industry (...)

    Underwater acoustics and the Royal Navy, 1893–1930.W. D. Hackmann - 1979 - Annals of Science 36 (3):255-278.
The real impetus for the research in underwater acoustics was the German U-boat menace of World War I. Traditional naval methods were of little use against the submarine, and thus British scientists concentrated on underwater detection. This led to the development of the hydrophone , which was extensively used during the war. As this instrument had many drawbacks, a small British team started to investigate an ‘active’ detection device in 1917. This was instigated by the work of the French physicist (...)
