Beyond Ethical Frameworks: Using Moral Experimentation in the Engineering Ethics Classroom.Olivia Walling - 2015 - Science and Engineering Ethics 21 (6):1637-1656.
Although undergraduate engineering ethics courses often include the development of moral sensitivity as a learning objective and the use of active learning techniques, teaching centers on the transmission of cognitive knowledge. This article describes a complementary assignment asking students to perform an ethics “experiment” on themselves that has a potential to enhance affective learning and moral imagination. The article argues that the focus on cognitive learning may not promote, and may even impair, our efforts to foster moral sensitivity. In contrast, (...)

Multi-User Virtual Environments (MUVEs) as Alternative Lifeworlds: Transformative Learning in Cyberspace.Shantanu Tilak, Michael Glassman, Irina Kuznetcova, Joshua Peri, Wang Qiannan, Ziye Wen & Amanda Walling - 2020 - Journal of Transformative Education 18 (4):310-337.
Direct instruction (PowerPoint presentations, lectures) often imposes hierarchical classroom structures where the teachers are considered experts, imparting knowledge to passive learners. However, the emergence of tools like Multi-User Virtual Environments (MUVEs) encourages the creation of democratic learning environments. We hypothesize that these tools lead to higher degrees of civil discourse within the classroom and create transformative learning trajectories for students, allowing them to create shared purpose to incite social change. By comparing reflectivity displayed in weekly students’ blogging assignments in a (...)

Spaces of rebellion: the use of multi-user virtual environments in the development of learner epistemic identity.Michael Glassman, Irina Kuznetcova, Tzu-Jung Lin, Shantanu Tilak, Qiannan Wang & Amanda Walling - 2020 - Journal of Experimental Education 89 (3):490-507.
This paper discusses the role of Multi-User Virtual Environments (MUVEs) in the development of epistemic learner identity. MUVEs might help educators create the types of tasks and intellectual open spaces helping students with learner identity development in the information age. MUVEs can create new possibilities for dissemination and sharing of critical information (e.g. nonhierarchical, non-linear), opening up spaces of (safe) rebellion against top-down, teacher directed educational processes, helping students become more autonomous thinkers, ready to question information, and search for multiple (...)

Lifespan Extension Via Dietary Restriction: Time to Reconsider the Evolutionary Mechanisms?Joshua P. Moatt, Eevi Savola, Jennifer C. Regan, Daniel H. Nussey & Craig A. Walling - 2020 - Bioessays 42 (8):1900241.
Dietary restriction (DR) is the most consistent environmental manipulation to extend lifespan. Originally thought to be caused by a reduction in caloric intake, recent evidence suggests that macronutrient intake underpins the effect of DR. The prevailing evolutionary explanations for the DR response are conceptualized under the caloric restriction paradigm, necessitating reconsideration of how or whether these evolutionary explanations fit this macronutrient perspective. In the authors’ opinion, none of the current evolutionary explanations of DR adequately explain the intricacies of observed results; (...)

Consciousness: anatomy of the soul.Peter T. Walling - 2009 - Bloomington, IN: AuthorHouse. Edited by Kenneth N. Hicks.
Walling and Hicks make a direct assault on the "Everest" of scientific mysteries. The authors trace the first glimmerings of consciousness in evolution and during emergence from anesthesia. There are no formulae or equations; all the difficult concepts have been presented as allegories and pictures. Unlike many philosophical books about consciousness, they have evidence to back up their ideas. This book is also an attempt to bridge the chasm between science and religion which the authors believe to be largely unnecessary.
