  1. Appreciation of Disturbing Art: Arthur Schopenhauer’s Aesthetic Perception on the Appreciation of the Art and Transcendence.Rodrigo Emil Carreon - 2025 - Mabini Review (1):123 - 141.
The standard of pleasing art creates a notion that is axiological in the nature of the art itself. Given this claim Schopenhauer asserts that disturbing art does not provide relief for the spectator, therefore it may not be viewed as a temporary escape from life’s suffering. This opus claims otherwise using the very same principle of Arthur Schopenhauer on aesthetics and the Will to Life. The introduction provides the philosophical inquests of Arthur Schopenhauer that are associated with the metaphysical position (...)

  2. The Acquaintance Inference and Hybrid Expressivism.Jochen Briesen - 2025 - Australasian Journal of Philosophy 103 (1):133-156.
Sentences containing predicates of personal taste (for example, ‘tasty’, ‘funny’) and aesthetic predicates (for example, ‘beautiful’) give rise to an acquaintance inference: They convey the information that speakers have first-hand experience with the object of predication, and that they can only be uttered appropriately if that is the case. Despite its relative infancy, ecological science plays a pre-eminent role in current environmental decision-making globally and has, over recent decades, permeated a broad range of academic disciplines. Developments in two areas of philosophical thought in particular, environmental aesthetics and the aesthetics of science, beg an exploration of their intersection with respect to the role of aesthetics in ecological science. Here, we provide a contemporary synthesis of both environmental aesthetics and aesthetics of science to explore aesthetic dimensions of contemporary ecological science, (...)

  16. Could the Artist Not Be Wrong? A Critical Notice of Sherri Irvin's Immaterial: The Rules of Contemporary Art(Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2022).Diarmuid Costello - 2024 - Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism 82 (4):441-448.
This article is a critical notice of Sherri Irvin’s Immaterial: Rules in Contemporary Art (2022). After introducing Irvin’s project, notably how she understands the role of “custom rules” for the display and conservation of, and participation in, works of contemporary art, I focus on two case studies that motivate her argument: Jan Dibbets’ work, All shadows that occurred to me (1969) and Sarah Sze’s Migrateurs (1997). According to Irvin, both works require the participation of museum conservators not merely for their (...)

  17. Comic objectification.Zoe Walker - 2025 - Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism 82 (4):355-366.
Is finding someone funny a way of treating them as an object? And if so, does that make it immoral? In this paper, I argue that seeing someone as comic involves failing to take into account their subjectivity, which makes it a form of objectification. As for the morality of this ‘comic objectification’, I argue that regarding someone with a comically objectifying attitude is wrongful when such an attitude plays a role in legitimating the oppression of members of their social (...)

  18. Reconsidering Mood and Narrative Cinema.Garrett Hartman Strpko - 2024 - Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism 82 (4):387-395.
This article provides a much-needed continuation of the discussion of mood in narrative cinema. Whereas the dominant accounts of mood and cinema are interested in how films and filmmakers artistically express ‘mood,’ and in whether these films can therefore give rise to an equivalent mood in viewers, this paper introduces the consideration of the moods spectators themselves bring to viewing experiences. I begin first with an overview of the influential accounts of mood and narrative cinema put forward by Carl Plantinga (...)

  19. Aesthetics as Philosophy of Art, or Hegel’s Reconciliation of Kantian Dualism.Alberto L. Siani - 2024 - Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism 82 (4):396-406.
Despite the extraordinary influence of Hegel’s aesthetics, the very term “aesthetics” features very seldom in his body of work. Considering both ongoing radical uncertainty as to the status of aesthetics as well as Hegel’s profound and persistent influence on aesthetics, it is worth reflecting on the reasons for, and potential alternatives to, Hegel’s use of the term “aesthetics.” This is the goal of this paper, which combines a reconstruction of Hegel’s variations on the topic with a broader perspective on what (...)

  20. Sublime music.Jerrold Levinson - 2024 - Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism 82 (4):367-375.
The goal of this essay is to identify the species of music that is most justifiably denominated sublime and to characterize it as fully as possible, in part through a suggested taxonomy of the species, illustrated by a wide range of musical examples. After a general discussion of sublimity in its original sphere of application—the natural world—I go on to consider the nature of sublime musical experience. I propose that categorizing music as some species of sublime is at base a (...)

  21. Rhinestone Cowboys: The Problem of Country Music Costuming.Emmie Malone - 2024 - Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism 82 (4):376-386.
In this paper, I attempt to answer the problem of country music costuming. That is, how can we reconcile the practical identity associated with country music with the image of the male country singer as the “rhinestone cowboy.” This is the question of how to make sense of the rural, working-class, ruggedly, and traditionally masculine persona common to the genre and seemingly endorsed by it with the elaborately embroidered, brightly colored, and highly embellished fashion of the genre. The intractability of (...)

  22. Virtual Fictional Actions.Karim Nader - 2024 - Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism 82 (4):418-429.
Virtual fictionalism is the view that virtual reality is a kind of fiction. We imagine that what we see and hear in virtual reality is real, although it is not. The problem with this view is that there are real moral concerns with our use of virtual reality, from violent video games to cases of virtual groping on social platforms. If what we do in virtual reality is just make-believe, the fictionalist cannot explain the real moral harms of our virtual (...)

"This book is essential reading for those interested in the imagination, epistemology, naturalism, and the philosophy of religion." - Charles Taliaferro, Professor of Philosophy, St. Olaf College, Minnesota The role of imagination in psychology, ethics and aesthetics provides a good analogy for thinking about the imagination in religious belief. in dealing with the inner lives of other human beings, moral values or aesthetic qualities we need to employ the imagination: to suppose, form hypotheses, empathize or imaginatively engage with alien people (...)

  28. Apprezzare altre menti.Luca Marchetti - forthcoming - Scenari.
Questo articolo si confronta con la seguente domanda: possono le menti degli altri animali essere oggetti legittimi di apprezzamento estetico? Alberto L. Siani’s volume Hegel and the Present of Art’s Past Character represents a successful attempt to actualize Hegelian aesthetic reflection and his philosophy more generally, precisely because of that thesis of the “past character” of art (far better known as the “end of art”) that for some interpreters seals the obsolescence of Hegel’s philosophy of art. Indeed, Alberto Siani is neither in the ranks of the reductionists, who (like Eva Geulen) circumscribe the thesis to a rumor, nor in...

  33. Rafe McGregor, Critical Criminology and Literary Criticism.Marta Benenti - 2024 - Rivista di Estetica 86 (86):218-219.
Rafe McGregor’s Critical Criminology and Literary Criticism is a book as unusual as it is challenging for philosophers of literature and aestheticians. Unsurprisingly, the perspective adopted by a non-professional philosopher, in this case a criminologist, manages to raise fundamental philosophical questions. First and foremost, the ambition of McGregor’s inquiry is that of making some difference to society, a call that philosophers still tend to ignore. Readjusting Karl Marx’s famous epitaph...

  36. Dopo la fine dell’arte?Stefano Ferrando - 2024 - Rivista di Estetica 86 (86):182-195.
The article focuses on the theme of the “End of Art” in the philosophy of Arthur C. Danto, a concept he developed in his writing in the mid-1980s. Departing from the historical framework developed since Analytical Philosophy of History (1965) and adopting an interpretive Hegelian approach to the construction of history, Danto’s thought grapples with several contradictions. These contradictions encompass the notion of the “End of Art”, ultimately leading to a reduction of art to an idealized level. Consequently, this highlights (...)

  37. L’angelo triste di Wim Wenders. Innocenza, tempo, kairos.Pio Colonnello - 2024 - Rivista di Estetica 86 (86):165-181.
Wim Wenders’ films offer not only emotions but are also a source of profound reflections on human existence, on the meaning of the change that breaks into the actuality of existence, on the privilege that mankind has to enjoy even the small pleasures of life. This essay deals with some central themes present in The Wings of Desire (Der Himmel über Berlin), with emphasis on the literary, conceptual and poietic references, which are a sort of “subtext”, a “secret plot” for (...)

  38. Lacan as speculative thinker?Alenka Zupančič - 2024 - Rivista di Estetica 86 (86):144-162.
Lacanian theory is not only a theoretical support for a certain kind of clinical practice, but also a powerful intervention in the traditional field of philosophy. The article aims to develop the sense in which the concept of the unconscious can be understood as a genuinely speculative concept. It starts from two different readings of the Cartesian cogito proposed by Lacan and insists on the significant fact that Lacan develops his second reading of the cogito in the context of his (...)

  39. Meillassoux attraverso lo specchio.Giovanni Temporin - 2024 - Rivista di Estetica 86 (86):127-143.
In this article, we examine Quentin Meillassoux’s concept of speculation. Starting from a characterization provided by Graham Harman, which we consider to be misleading, we will first seek to clarify two key aspects of Meillassoux’s speculation, namely non-metaphysicality and factiality. In doing so, we will demonstrate a tension between systematicity and exposition within speculative materialism. Finally, we will refer to Meillassoux’s theory of faculties and to his distinction between two concepts of absolute in order to explain the difference between philosophical (...)

  40. La forma della proposizione speculativa tra scrittura filosofica e traduzione.Silvia Pieroni - 2024 - Rivista di Estetica 86 (86):109-123.
Hegel’s claim on the unity of form and content founds the main normative criterion of philosophical exposition and thus of the «speculative proposition», which is in the Phenomenology of Spirit the own form of speculative thinking. This paper explains how the speculative proposition enacts the dialectical unity of form and content. My aim is to prove that the aesthetic or linguistic moment plays a constitutive role in the articulation of speculative thinking. To that end, I will examine the philosophical statement (...)

  41. Speculative conception of thought: Hegel on language.Goran Vranešević - 2024 - Rivista di Estetica 86 (86):87-108.
The article deals with Hegel’s distinctive conceptualization of language, which takes a speculative form. Not only does language play a crucial role in understanding Hegel’s speculative philosophy, but it also provides a novel way of understanding the inner mechanics of thought formation and explication. While language does fulfil a common communicative purpose for Hegel, this is but of minor importance; Hegel rather emphasized the everyday use of language in all its speculative splendour. There is namely an ambiguity present in some (...)

It is argued, in this article, that Hegel’s philosophy is permeated by a tacit thesis, and that this takes the form of a non-dialectical negation, the precise nature and speculative importance of which we propose to determine. The unspoken thesis is that Hegel never directly states that his conceptual sublation of the representative form of Christianity results in the strict deletion of both the resurrection of Christ and the immortality of the soul. Yet, far from being reducible to the author’s (...)

  43. Speculative Rationality and Its Dialectic: Thinking (in) the Contemporary World.Angelica Nuzzo - 2024 - Rivista di Estetica 86 (86):4-64.
This essay advocates for a form of dialectic-speculative rationality modeled on Hegel’s view of dialectic and speculation as the most adequate “method” to address the philosophical problem of understanding the complexities of today’s world.

  44. Il programma speculativo.Gunnar Hindrichs - 2024 - Rivista di Estetica 86 (86):31-47.
The project of speculative thinking cannot ignore the post-speculative intellectual situation. Rather, it must react to it and constitute itself within it. To this end, it must come to terms with the double meaning of speculation - elevation (specula) and mirror (speculum). In a dialogue with Plato, Kant, and Hegel on the one hand, and Dieter Henrich and Hans Heinz Holz on the other, the essay argues in favour of taking the precariousness of speculation seriously and transforming it from a (...)

  45. Speculative Thinking: An Introduction.Giulia Illetterati Bernard - 2024 - Rivista di Estetica 86 (86):3-28.
Speculative thinking is back. This is anyhow the impression one gets from the titles of some recent publications and the labels of the philosophical trends that have emerged in the first decades of the twenty-first century. But what do we mean when we speak of speculative thinking or speculation today? What is the relationship between the classical uses of this term and those that are proposed today? In this introduction, we will (I) examine how the term ‘speculative’ has been employed in (...)

  46. Binding the Present and the Future: Transgenerational Social Actions as Joint Commitments.Costanza Penna - 2024 - Rivista di Estetica 86:196-214.
Transgenerational social actions are collective actions that endure over a considerable period of time and require the cooperation of multiple generations. Yet, it remains unclear what kind of obligations and rights, if any, allow actions to persist through the ages, binding future generations to be part of them. This paper proposes a way forward by considering transgenerational actions as a particular type of long-term joint commitments. Drawing on plural subject theory, I explore the conditions for membership, normativity, and justification of (...)

  47. Beauty Filters in Self-Perception: The Distorted Mirror Gazing Hypothesis.Gloria Andrada - 2025 - Topoi:1-12.
Beauty filters are automated photo editing tools that use artificial intelligence and computer vision to detect facial features and modify them, allegedly improving a face’s physical appearance and attractiveness. Widespread use of these filters has raised concern due to their potentially damaging psychological effects. In this paper, I offer an account that examines the effect that interacting with such filters has on self-perception. I argue that when looking at digitally-beautified versions of themselves, individuals are looking at AI-curated distorted mirrors. This (...)
