Le texte IG II3 4, 624 pour un héraut périodonique doit certainement être attribué à Valerius Eklektos de Sinope, déjà connu par un long texte d’Athènes, une base à Olympie et un piédestal retrouvé à Delphes resté inédit et publié ici. L’ensemble permet de reconstituer le parcours d’un artiste hors norme connu par quatre textes gravés à des moments différents de sa carrière. 2. Les fragments IG II3 4, 616 et 617 appartiennent (...) au même palmarès du second tiers du IIIe s. et peuvent vraisemblablement être reliés l’un à l’autre. Si IG II3 4, 618 ne provient pas du même monument, il pourrait lui être en revanche contemporain. 3. La base SEG 58, 185 honore non un agonothète mais un épistate, dont sont vantés les succès lors d’une longue carrière. 4. IG II² 2772 est une dédicace funéraire faite par un boxeur et xystarque pour un parent ou un ami. (shrink)

Western Zhou Dynasty Western Zhou bronze inscriptions is to study the history of one of the most important historical data, subject to accurate staging and the Interpretation of the premise. Mid-Western Zhou season Ding, Jin Yang Gui and other information in the "Sikou" is not the official said, there is always a judicial official weekly generation "Sikou" of the set or with a similar view can not be established. Zhou, "Sikou" the establishment of very late times, can only be (...) derived up to the West weekend leaves, and its position is not high, in order to arrest Koudao, maintaining social order as the main ministry. Bureaucracy in the recovery of the Western Zhou Dynasty, it should distinguish Officials with the ministry, and not with the "Rites" and other literature forced analogy. Bronze inscriptions in Western Thou can become a vital historical evidence to study its history, only on the condition of a prudent periodization and explanation. Sikou in bronze inscriptions on xiaojiding and yanggui is not a name for official rank. The argument that there ever existed a judicial office of sikou and alike during the whole Thou Dynasty is problematic. Instead, it was set up as late as in the end of Western Zhou. Ranked rather low, sikou was mainly in charge of conning after robbers and guarding the social security. When doing research on the reinstatement of the bureaucracy in Western Thou, the official rank and its responsibility should be considered in separation, and any effort to conform them to that in zhouli is questionable. Inscriptions of the Epigraphic Museum in Athens (II) This article, a continuation of BCH 132 (2008) pp. 473-553, presents a series of fragments studied and joins made at the Epigraphic Museum in Athens by D. Peppas Delmousou, Honorary Director of the Museum. The inscribed monuments are bases, herms, or stelae. The honorific inscriptions and dedications concern roman emperors, Augustus and Hadrian, Romans fulfilling administrative duties, known or unknown otherwise, Athenian aliens or roman citizens, a few unknown and some (...) women, such as Vibullia Alcia, mother of Herodes Atticus, or Paramona, or priestesses of a Kourotrophos goddess and of Demeter. Several monuments had been consecrated in sanctuaries, notably at the Asklepieion, the priest and the zákoros of which are occasionally mentioned. (shrink)

Inscriptions from Amathous X. Greek and latin inscriptions from the agora of Amathous. The riches of this batch of inscriptions reflect the importance of its find spot. If of three building dedications there exists nothing but the most banal elements, that of a probable mausoleum dedicated to Germanicus reveals an unrecognized aspect of the cult of this prince. Statuary dedications uncover two new proconsuls and a new proquestor, as well as two hitherto unencountered documents from Cyprus : (...) a bronze statue of Gordian III, and that of a doukenarion, interim governor of the island. Together, with proof of the city’s status as metropolis, and a document unique in its type, the plan of a sacred asylum zone, the inscriptions shed new light on the economic and political panorama of Amathous in imperial times, which until recently appeared rather lustreless. Publication de 25 inscriptions nouvelles de Kallipolis d'Étolie, provenant presque toutes des fouilles françaises et grecques de 1977-1979. Sur une exèdre semi-circulaire probablement surmontée d'une statue équestre, étaient gravés 18 décrets honorifiques abrégés datant du IIe siècle av. J.-C., les premiers décrets émanant d'une cité étolienne trouvés en Étolie. L'étude de ces décrets conduit à examiner la façon dont la datation éponyme était indiquée chez les Kallipolitains, tantôt par un ou plusieurs archontes, tantôt par le seul secrétaire des archontes. (...) Ces textes permettent d'autre part d'ébaucher le cercle géographique des relations d'une petite cité de Grèce centrale. Ils amènent enfin à examiner le rapport entre Kallipolitas et Kallieus, deux ethniques qui coexistent pendant près de 80 ans, et ne doivent pas correspondre à une seule et même communauté politique : Kallipolitas désigne les citoyens de la cité, tandis que Kallieus serait un ethnique régional, désignant tout ou partie des communautés environnantes, et peut-être lié à l'un des districts de la confédération étolienne. Parmi les autres textes ici publiés, remarquable est un ex-voto dédié à la Nuit divinisée et à Artémis. L'étude se clôt par la liste récapitulative des 18 inscriptions de Kallion-Kallipolis antérieurement connues, et par la prosopographie des Kalliéens et Kallipolitains, qui compte 194 entrées. L'inscription publiée ici, gravée sur du marbre thasien et écrite en alphabet parien, est datée des années 470/460 av. J.-C. et se réfère à l'octroi de biens immobiliers par la cité de Bergè au Thasien Timèsicratès. Le lieu de la découverte et le contenu de l'inscription ne laissent aucun doute sur l'identification de la ville antique de Berge avec le site archéologique qui se trouve au Sud-Ouest du village actuel de Néos Skopos Serrôn. Le problème de la localisation de Berge (...) est donc définitivement résolu et la cité trouve sa place dans l'environnement historique de la région. Berge fut fondée par les Thasiens au VIe siècle, sur les bords du lac Kerkinitis et du fleuve Stry- mon. La première installation devait être un emporion qui, très vite, acquit le statut de cité, frappant sa propre monnaie et jouissant d'institutions démocratiques — boule et démos —, au début du Ve siècle du moins. De par sa situation, la cité est un maillon important dans la chaîne des colonies thasiennes et une étape sur la voie commerciale de la vallée du Strymon qui, grâce à la navigabilité du fleuve, constitue l'axe le plus propice à la pénétration des Thasiens dans l'arrière-pays thrace, jusqu'à Pisti- ros, assurant ainsi les échanges commerciaux entre Grecs et dynastes thraces, comme cela apparaît également dans l'inscription de Pistiros. C'est la raison pour laquelle, juste après l'effondrement de la puissance maritime thasienne, les Athéniens incluent Berge dans la confédération athénienne, en attendant de fonder leur propre colonie d'Amphipolis, qui leur permet de contrôler efficacement la vallée du Strymon. Inscriptions from Thasos. This article presents twelve inscriptions, most of them found during the excavations of the French School at Athens from 1970 to 1973. Among them, we note particularly two short lists of theoroi inscribed on stones which do not belong to the “ passage of theoroi” but allow correcting or improving ancient readings of some lists found in this place ; dedications of magistrates or private persons, one of which was consecrated by all the magistrates in (...) office the same year— unfortunately, without any information concerning the offices ; the horos stone of a new patre to be added to those found by Cl. Rolley during his excavations of the Thesmophorion ; three epitaphs inscribed on a sarcophagus, one of them metrical. These inscriptions date from the first half of the fourth century BC to the second half of the second or the beginning of the third century AD. (shrink)

Inscriptions from Rhodes for citizens dead in combat, ἄνδρες ἀγαθοὶ γενόμενοι. This article studies three inscriptions from Rhodos for citizens dead in combat. The first (3rd century BC), here in editio princeps, is engraved on the base of a statue erected posthumously by the city for a general fallen during the war. The second is republished, connecting two fragments previously unrecognized as belonging to the same plaque inserted in the funerary monument of two brothers (genitive), honored posthumously with (...) a gold crown and a bronze portrait-statue by the city, in the company of their companions in arms on the cataphract galleys (1st century BC). The third inscription, finally, lost and reedited from the squeeze, was engraved on another inserted plaque from the tomb erected by the city for three brothers dead in the war against the Tyrrhenian pirates (3rd century BC). The article also presents reflexions on the manner in which the Rhodians manifest their recognition for citizens who died heroically. (shrink)

P. 103-184 Les inscriptions en linéaire Β portées par les 56 nodules en argile — lesquels présentent également une empreinte de sceau — qui ont été trouvés en 1982 à Thèbes avaient déjà été glosées ici ou là mais jamais véritablement éditées. On trouvera ici photographie, dessin et transcription des faces portant les groupes de signes, le tout accompagné d'un apparat (...) critique et d'index. L'édition est précédée d'une introduction archéologique et suivie de commentaires épigraphiques, paléographiques et philologiques. Enfin, l'on s'interrogera sur l'interprétation qu'il convient de donner de ce groupe homogène de documents, lesquels avaient été réunis dans un but bien précis : la solution est sans doute fournie par une tablette en linéaire Β de Pylos qui présente des similitudes chiffrées étonnantes avec notre ensemble de nodules inscrits. ‘Methods’ and their devices have been conventionally viewed as the means through which the move from world to representation (and back again) might be reliably performed. An alternative view, perhaps most clearly exemplified by the post-ANT empirical programme of ‘material semiotics’, sees methods and devices as integral to the ways particular ‘realities’ are enacted in practices of inscription and intervention. Drawing upon this latter work, the present paper examines the role of satellite images, GIS and GPS data and devices in (...) the methods utilized in the location, identification and classification of ‘illegal deforestation’ in Brazilian Amazonia. Here we witness how efforts to render ‘deforestation’ into a stable object of knowledge, singular and coordinated, are countered by attempts to render it multiple and irreconcilable as methods and devices become entangled in the conflicts and antagonisms of social life. Peppas Delmousou et les révisions de textes faites à cette occasion, soit 39 documents, souvent complétés par de nouveaux fragments : un fragment de décret et deux de lettres impériales, deux tables d’archontes et une liste du Ier siècle, peut-être de philoi, cinq listes de prytanes ou d’aïsitoi, cinq documents agonistiques, une liste de noms inscrite sur un chapiteau et un haut de colonne, quatre documents évoquant des constructions ou réparations (...) ou des épimélètes chargés de ces travaux, sept épitaphes, huit épigrammes, notamment pour Secundilla et Attikia, et deux brèves inscriptions paléo-byzantines. L’ensemble comprend quelques fragments inédits ou omis dans les corpora récents. Ces documents sont de l’époque romaine entendue au sens large, du IIe siècle av. J.-C. au VIe siècle apr. J.-C. In "An Inscriptional Approach to Indirect Quotation," Israel Scheffler presented an analysis of sentences of the form '... writes that ---'. He was primarily concerned to give a nominalistic analysis of indirect discourse which would elude certain objections offered by Church. Here the question is not whether the analysis eludes those criticisms. The question is whether the analysis is correct. I shall argue that it is not.

Publication de quatre inscriptions inédites de Paros, deux stèles funéraires trouvées près de la Katapolïani, une dédicace de la paire des Dordopes à l'Archégète et une dédicace de l'équipage d'un dikrotos à Démèter Parienne ; l'établissement de ce dernier texte permet de reconnaître en IG XII Suppl. 210, une dédicace analogue faite par un équipage rhodien.

Au cours des travaux de la mission de l'École Française à Amathonte (Chypre) a été découverte, en 1984, une inscription phénicienne gravée sur un fond de coupe attique de vernis noir. L'inscription se compose d'un nom de personne, précédé de la préposition L « (appartenant) à ». Il s'agit d'un nom de personne théophore qu'on propose de lire YKNSM[S] « (dieu) Sams établira fermement ». L'inscription peut être datée de la première moitié du ve siècle av. J.-G.

Inscriptions of Amathous IX. A dispatch from the Vogüé mission (1862) rediscovered at the Louvre. An inscription found in 1862 by de Vogüé’s archaeological mission in the village of Aghios Tychonas (coming so from the site of Amathous) has been rediscovered in the Louvre in 2009. This was only known through Waddington’s old publication (1870). The text, dating probably of the early Hellenistic period, mentions a trees plantation and the offering of a naos by a certain Simos. This plot, (...) which should have been a small sacred grove (alsos), was situated between the Heraion and a pavement. Even it is not possible to determinate the location of this certainly private consecration, the inscription gives a precious evidence on the religious topography of Amathous at the beginning of the Ptolemaic era, and in particular on the presence of a sanctuary dedicated to Hera, whose cult is very rarely attested in Cyprus. Une nouvelle inscription digraphe a été découverte dans le sanctuaire d'Aphrodite à Amathonte de Chypre : c'est la consécration par le roi Androklès, dans les années 330-310 av. J.-C, des statues de ses deux fils, Orestheus et Andragoras, à « l'Aphrodite chypriote ». La partie écrite en syllabaire chypriote malheureusement très mutilée, paraît transcrire la langue indigène, dite « étéochypriote ».

Une inscription trouvée à Chalcis célèbre l'exploit d'un Callinikos qui lors des Dionysia a fait 55 fois le tour de l'orchestra, porté sur une perche, et qui a soulevé seul le phallos. Rapprochement avec diverses traditions populaires.

The Greek inscription set up by the Epicurean philosopher Diogenes of Oinoanda, probably in the first half of the second century AD, is a document of extraordinary interest and importance. It is the longest inscription known from the ancient world, perhaps running to about 25,000 words, and the only one to give a detailed exposition of a philosophical system. Since 1884 a total of 299 pieces of the inscription have been found scattered about the ruins of Oinoanda in the mountains (...) of southwest Turkey - substantial finds, but still not even a third of the complete work. Of these fragments 76 were found in the ten years 2003-2012, all but one of them during a new epigraphical and architectural survey of Oinoanda directed by Martin Bachmann in 2007-2012. Jürgen Hammerstaedt and Martin Ferguson Smith recorded and edited the new finds. The present volume brings together all the articles in which they presented the new texts and revisions of "old" ones and described the survey. It contains also three new sections, including indices of Greek names and words. (shrink)

The discovery of three erotic inscriptions in a quarry in the south of the island has a limited interest from the point of view of Thasian onomastics. On the other hand, the ancient lettering of at least one of the names makes it possible to date the quarry face and thus the end of the exploitation of this part of the quarry to the 5th c. BC. The rediscovery of a nearby site mentioned by Baker-Penoyre and interpreted as a (...) bastion, could thrown light on the meaning of the inscriptions, linked here as at Kalami to a military context. An analysis of the engraving and a reinterpretation of an inscribed block on the acropolis do not rule out another hypothesis: that they were quarrymen's jokes. (shrink)

This article discusses paleographic and linguistic aspects of the Kharoṣṭhī inscriptions on the Tillya-tepe and Pushkalavati coins and adduces some epigraphic and literary parallels. It proposes a syntactically separate reading of the two sides of the Tillya-tepe coin, and concludes that in spite of some differences of execution the coins may have been produced in the same workshop.

The Macedonian sanctuary of the Autochthonous Mother of the Gods at Leukopetra, near Beroia, was (...) discovered by earth-moving equipment and emergency excavation in 1965, when a segment of the new national highway was being built. Although the site itself has never been fully excavated, many architectural pieces, four altars, three offering tables, stelai, and plaques were rescued and taken to the Beroia Museum. The original excavator, Photias Petsas, helped recently by a younger generation of accomplished epigraphists, has labored over the years and through many vicissitudes to publish these finds. For this was not [End Page 136] merely a sanctuary, not merely a small marble temple, but a sanctuary and temple covered with inscriptions, most of them (161 of 170 complete enough to categorize) recording the cession or consecration of slaves or children to the service of the goddess. Many of the inscriptions (127 of 194) are virtually complete and dated by local and imperial era, the earliest from A.D. 141-42 (?), the latest from A.D. 313.This handsomely produced and meticulously edited volume therefore publishes a corpus of material that contributes to a number of important topics: to the debate over the legal and actual status of the persons ceded to gods here and elsewhere; to the administration and health of a small sanctuary in the territory of a larger city in Roman Macedonia; and to the religious beliefs that may have undergirded all of the above. It also provides evidence of the erratic but apparent diffusion of Roman legal status, legal concepts, and legal practices even in the backcountry of a larger city, and thereby also sheds interesting light on what happens before and after the Constitutio Antoniniana in one specific place. All this should interest historians of Greece under the Empire, or students of the phenomenon of "Romanization," or historians of Greece keen to track continuity and change in the practices of sanctuaries and slaves.The volume itself is a pleasure to use. The lengthy introduction covers the mythical and actual history of the area (20-23); the geographical and social backgrounds of the dedicators (23-28); the goddess, her multiple names, and her financial dealings (28-33); the legal status of the consecrated (33-60, with a clear summary of a hundred-year-old controversy); onomastics (61-63); and language (63-73)--the Lefkopetra inscriptions constitute a "unique dossier" (63) for how Greek was spoken for centuries during the High Empire. How each lemma is to be laid out is then discussed (74), and the architectural and other pieces described (75-78); for the last, the drawings (figs. 37-51) are indispensable. All that is missing is a discussion of letter forms, itself noted as reserved for further study by J. Touratsoglou (75).The 194 inscriptions (plus five incerta) are clearly presented, restored when need be, translated, and discussed; all but three (nos. 79, 191, and 193) have pictures as well. Because the inscriptions themselves are also very (if not uniformly) formulaic, their readings seem relatively straightforward to me and I can make no suggestions for corrections in what seem to me to be well-read and well-restored texts except to suggest that numbers 136 and 160 belong to the same monument--a suggestion in which I have been anticipated by Marijana Ricl, who was kind enough to send me an article (forthcoming in Tyche 16, 2001) in which she discusses these inscriptions and suggests different supplements or explanations in only thirteen other cases (nos. 5, 26, 45, 46, 51, 53, 58, 63, 78, 90, 93, 115, and 150). Lors de la campagne de fouilles de 1990 à Malia, au Quartier Nu, deux inscriptions en linéaire Β peintes sur deux vases à étrier ont été découvertes. Elles proviennent d'un bâtiment détruit au début du MR III B, d'après le matériel abondant trouvé dans la couche de destruction. Elles sont constituées chacune d'un mot, vraisemblablement un anthroponyme. Elles apportent une nouvelle preuve de l'intérêt du MR III maliote.

Les carnets de fouilles de Smith et Myres fournissent 25 épitaphes amathousiennes inédites, auxquelles se joignent deux épitaphes d'un cippe récemment découvert et de nouvelles lectures de textes déjà connus. L'ensemble fait connaître 31 noms nouveaux, des surnoms et deux ethniques encore non attestés à Chypre (Αίγαιεύς et Θηβαίος). Les formules funéraires amathousiennes, et l'explication des liens de parenté se révèlent plus variées qu'il n'apparaissait jusqu'à présent et l'usage relativement fréquent de la métronymie se confirme.
