Meine bisherigen Veroffentlichungen entsprechen nach Reihenfolge und Inhalt meiner eigenen Entwicklung. Nun, da dieser ProzeB voraussichtlich abgeschlossen ist, mOchte ich in einer Art philosophischen Testamentes zusam menfassen, was mir am wichtigsten scheint. Die friiheren Schriften sollen dadurch nicht ersetzt werden; vielmehr hoffe ich, daB diese konzentrierte und systematische Darstellung dazu helfen werde, sie besser zu verstehen. Der Titel des Buches konnte demgegeniiber unangemessen, ja anmaBend erscheinen; er ist aber weder das eine noch das andere. Es handelt sich in der Tat (...) urn Philosophia perennis. Diese aber verwirklicht sich nie anders als in einer bestimmten Gestalt; hier erscheint sie im Beispiel meines eigenen Philo sophierens. Was folgt, erhebt also nicht den Anspruch, die Philosophie, sondern nur den, Philosophie zu sein. Durch gelegentliche Hinweise auf andere Gestalten solI einerseits meine Auf fassung verdeutlicht, andererseits ihre Zugehorigkeit zur Einen Philosophie bekundet werden. Urn Vollsdindigkeit geht es dabei nicht, weder was die Wiir digung der zitierten Philosophen oder Richtungen noch gar was ihre Zahl betrifft. Nach beiden Seiten handelt es sich urn eine Auswahl, welme allein unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Erlauterung und Abgrenzung der eigenen Position getroffen ist. 1m iibrigen bin ich mir der Fragwiirdigkeit solcher Konfrontation bewuBt. Sie griindet sich immer auf eine Interpretation, welche von Subjektivi tat nie absolut frei sein wird. Das Gewicht des Bumes liegt denn auch nicht auf der Kundgabe historisch-kritischer Ansicht, sondern auf der systematischen Dar stellung philosophischer Einsicht, und ich bitte den Leser, dies zu beriicksich tigen. The text proposes an interpretation of the reference framework and the framing procedure in philosophy through the construction of the context of references. The essential question addresses the type of conditions associated with the practice of a given philosophy. The basic conditions connected with the tradition, the scope of reflection and the interpretative method used have been analyzed in the work. The examples of positive and negative framing have been presented in the first group of conditions. The possibility of a (...) neutral framing has been discussed on the basis of the concept of no-assumption philosophy. In the second group, the attention has been paid to the cultural framework and the worldview / ideological framework related to the practice of philosophy. Finally, the analysis of the frameworks for the methods used in philosophy has been carried out on the example of such attitudes as anything goes and philosophia perennis. The legitimacy of in-depth reflection on framing also in the construction of a philosophical statement has been stated in the conclusions. (shrink)

In den einzelnen Beiträgen der Erich Heintel gewidmeten Festschrift spiegeln sich dessen Auffassung von Philosophie als «perenner» Prinzipienwissenschaft europäischer Tradition. Sie reflektiert die Voraussetzungsproblematik alles Erkennens von der empirischen Einzelforschung bis hin zur Theologie sowie Sinn und Grenze ihres eigenen Vorgehens. Ontologisches Voraussetzungswissen der antik-mittelalterlichen Form- bzw. Substanzmetaphysik und neuzeitlichen Transzendentalphilosophie müssen in ihrem Sinnanspruch ebenso unterschieden wie auch miteinander «versöhnt» werden, um den Menschen in seiner Einheit als «daseiende Transzendentalität» erfassen zu können. Die Frage nach dem Begriff des Menschen (...) ist inneres Organisationsprinzip der vereinigten Studien, die sich in systematischer Differenzierung mit Fragen der theoretischen, praktischen und poietischen Philosophie, zuletzt aber auch mit theologischen Problemstellungen beschäftigen. Die ersten vier von Brentanos 25 Habilitationsthesen fordern eine Erneuerung der Philosophie - worauf diese Forderung jedoch abzielt, ist nicht so klar. Vielfach wird behauptet, daß dieses Ziel eng verwandt mit der Konzeption einer wissenschaftlichen Philosophie im Sinne Russells und des Logischen Empirismus sei. Diese insbesondere auch von Rudolf Haller vertretene Auffassung setzt aber voraus, daß der katholisch-klerikale Kontext, in den der junge Priester Brentano eingebunden war, nur die unwesentliche Hülle eines eigentlichen Kernes bildet. Dagegen wird gezeigt, daß dieser Kontext (...) nicht so ablösbar, sondern vielmehr für das Verständnis der Habilitationsthesen unabdingbar ist. Es ergibt sich, daß das, worauf die vier ersten Thesen abzielen, eine Erneuerung der philosophia perennis aus dem Geiste des Thomas von Aquin und im Rahmen der Vorgaben der Kirchenlehre ist. Verene commemorated Ernesto Grassi by recognizing that his work allows for a fresh approach to Vico, Heidegger, Renaissance, and rhetorical studies (1996, 295–303). While Grassi's authority on Vico remains undisputed, examination of his relevance to other fields of study is still wanting. As for Martin Heidegger, his students have been too numerous and successful for Grassi to easily claim pride of place among them. In turn, as Verene notes, American Renaissance scholarship has failed to realize that Grassi's work represents a direct alternative to that of Paul Oskar Kristeller, another student of Heidegger. Kristeller's influential characterization of Renaissance [End Page 242] humanism as a rhetorical and thus, in his view, nonphilosophical tradition often causes Grassi to be simply dismissed.1 Finally, his reception in rhetorical studies remains problematic and limited in its own right.In his Foreword to the reprint of Grassi's Rhetoric as Philosophy (1980), Timothy W. Crusius clearly expresses the confused deference that has caused rhetoricians to steer clear of the "anomaly" Grassi represents. Crusius laments that scholars have not attempted to bring Grassi into conversation with partisans of rhetoric like Hans-Georg Gadamer and that very little attention has been paid to works such as The Primordial Metaphor (1994) or to the overall religious dimension of his thought. Crusius attributes this general neglect to the American rhetoricians' unfamiliarity with the Latin-humanist rhetorical tradition: Grassi, in direct opposition to Heidegger, would have fashioned his philosophy from Roman rather than Greek sources (2001, xiii–xviii).This essay closely narrates2 how Grassi's notions of metaphysics and "rhetoric" developed in his early writings in order to dispel some of the misconceptions that have prevented readers from entering what Grassi himself defines as the "originary tension" awakening his own and, indeed, any philosopher's concerns, interests, and pathos (1994, 5–6). For if Grassi often lamented Heidegger's philhellenism—an aversion to romanitas at which he and other "Latin" students such as José Ortega y Gasset took personal offense (1988, 347)—we shall see that his philosophy was originally grounded on a nontraditional reading of Greek sources. The phrase philosophia perennis is said to have been first used by Leibniz. It has been adopted and freely employed by the Catholic Neo-Thomists, for whom it means a development of the Aristotelianism, modified by strong Neoplatonic elements, which Arabian scholars transmitted to the first Renaissance in the West. It claims also to be a return to the early Christian philosophy of religion, a fusion of Hellenistic and Jewish thought, the latter itself a syncretistic religion with many Persian (...) and other borrowings. The controversy, directed against various modern philosophies, has been conducted with great ability by such writers as Gilson, Maritain, Sheen, Watkin, Dawson and D'Arcy, whose books would perhaps have received more attention from independent thinkers, but for the suspicion which surrounds apparent attempts to revive the methods and inhibitions of the medieval schoolmen. There has been a parallel movement in the Orthodox Eastern Church, represented in Russian by Frank, Bardyaeff, Solovioff and Lossky. These writers are more Platonic and more fearlessly mystical than the Thomists. Origen in the East has more weight than Augustine. (shrink)

In essence, religion is a form of human expression concerning spiritual experience and the relationship with the Divine. In this regard, religion can be a source of strength and inspiration for individuals and communities to live a meaningful life. However, in the context of rapid globalization and modernization, conflicts and tensions often arise between different religious groups. In the context of religious moderation, the idea of perennial philosophy is used to understand religious pluralism. This research aims to explicate the ideas (...) of Seyyed Hossein Nasr's perennial philosophy towards the plural religious reality and to use his thoughts in building an understanding of religious moderation. This research uses a literature review method with a philosophical approach that aims to understand the thoughts or theories of a figure. The results of this study explain the importance of understanding universal religious values in building harmony in practicing religion and establishing inter-religious dialogues to reduce conflict and promote peace among different religious followers. Thus, the construction of religious moderation from the perspective of Seyyed Hossein Nasr's philosophy can bring peace and harmony to a society that is becoming increasingly pluralistic and complex. Nasr also emphasizes the importance of maintaining fundamental spiritual and moral values in religions as an effort to avoid fundamentalism and extremism. (shrink)

In this article the heritage of Hryhorij Skovoroda is considered from the metaphilosophical point of view. This point of view is useful because it allows seeing some syncretism as unity of philosophy, theology, religion, myth, and poetry in the heritage of Hryhorij Skovoroda. Therefore, the author stresses that when we analyze the Hryhorij Skovoroda’s heritage it is wrong to divide it into such parts as philosophy, theology, religion, myth, and poetry. This division doesn’t lead to the whole understanding of Hryhorij (...) Skovoroda’s personality and works. The author argues that Hryhorij Skovoroda is the follower of Philosophia Perennis’ tradition, which is characterized by syncretism. Such syncretism of the Skovoroda’s heritage is neither bad nor good. We see the unique unity of philosophy, poetry, religion and mythology in the Skovoroda’s life and in his works. The author argues that such unity is useful for the deeper understanding of the world and a human being. Syncretic unity of Skovoroda’s worldview helps to overcome the different oppositions of classical philosophy (subject-object, inner-external, immortal-mortal, natural-supernatural, human-divine, relative-absolute etc.). We live in the times of analysis and fragmented world. Therefore syncretism is very hard to understand. In order to understand syncretism we should return to synthetic thinking, we should rediscover the synthetic function of our consciousness. The life and the works of Skovoroda show us how a human being can think synthetically and regain the whole worldview. The whole worldview helps live in the harmony with others and nature. This harmony is very needed in our times of “moral blindness” (Zygmunt Bauman), decay of traditions, which were oriented us towards common values. The article analyzes the main directions and cases of research and reception of the creative heri- tage of Hrygorii Skovoroda in Germany. Even though Dmytro Chyzhevskyi introduced German scientists to Skovoroda’s work back in the 1930s, its actual reception, according to the author, began only in the 1980s. The article analyzes the research of three authors who carry out such a reception today. First, Elizabeth von Erdmann examines Skovoroda’s work in the context of philosophia perennis. Instead, Roland Pietsch (...) began his study of Skovoroda’s work by translating his works into German and later focused on demonstrating the unity of mysticism and metaphysics in Skovoroda’s phi- losophy, according to how this unity was ensured in his doctrine of self-knowledge. Pietsch demonstrated this unity in his interpretation of the Narcissus dialogue. Another essential aspect of Skovoroda’s work, explored by Pietsch, is the philosopher’s symbolic metaphysics. Pietsch’s latest works are devoted to another important issue — establishing Skovoroda’s place in European intel- lectual history, in particular, based on a comparative analysis of the concepts of Hrygorii Skovo- roda, Johann Georg Hamann, and Franz von Baader. Another German researcher who studies Skovoroda’s work today is Slavologist and theologian Günter Kollert, who has been engaged in the philosophy of Skovoroda and Pamfil Yurkevich for several years and has translated the works of Skovoroda and Mykhailo Kovalynskyi into German. The author of the article concludes that new interesting independent studies of Skovoroda’s work will appear in Germany, which will make it possible to more accurately define Skovoroda’s place in the historical-philosophical process, to think more profoundly and describe this process, as well as to pave the way to possible abandonings and comparisons of Ukrainian works thinker with other famous figures in the history of philosophical thought. This article critically assesses the empirical research that leads Quine, in his posthumously published work, to abandon his empiricist principle that humans do not have any innate concepts, or knowledge. It is the same empirical research that Penelope Maddy capitalizes on to develop her own contributions to naturalized epistemology, and it has been pioneered by developmental psychologist Elisabeth Spelke. Spelke employs the method of habituation and preferential looking to argue that human infants have innate concepts, and that they have some (...) knowledge about what can and cannot happen to physical objects. Taking into account empirical studies as well as methodological considerations, this article examines whether this research can support these strong philosophical conclusions drawn from it, finding that it likely cannot provide such support. Philosophy, I know, is philosophia perennis . A “dated” philosophy, therefore, would appear almost to amount to a contradiction in terms. In this sense the “challenge” implied by the title of this paper seems out of place. A challenge to philosophers—well, perhaps. But a challenge to philosophers in the atomic age —no! In general such an objection is well taken. But we are, of course, never confronted with a situation “in general,” but always with a very specific—and to-day, (...) moreover, with a unique —situation. It is a situation which has changed radically even since the close of official hostilities at the so-called end of World War II. True enough, the history of the two world-wars had already brought home to us the fact that, with the accelerating development of applied science and technology, wars were rapidly approaching a tremendous scale of destructive power.
