Between Sciences and Ethics: A New Quarrel of Faculties?Bernard Reber - 2016 - In Precautionary principle, pluralism and deliberation: science and ethics. London, UK: ISTE. pp. 143–171.
Expert's independence is often highlighted in order to ensure the successful conduct of a scientific and technological evaluation. This chapter considers the attempt of the unusual science sociologist Bruno Latour to discover the functions to be summoned to form a new “parliament”, which will work as much on facts as on values to build a common world made of humans and non‐humans. His essay, involving the descriptive and normative dimensions of knowledge, is significant for the innovating participatory technology assessment (...)

    Science and ethical investment.Robert Taylor - 2002 - Business Ethics: A European Review 11 (1):77-85.
The article explores the relationship between science and ethical investment, which is often concerned with the application of science and technology through commercial organisations. The article considers the contribution that scientific understanding makes to ethical investment, and the way in which ethical investment can improve the public perception of science. It then goes on to consider the historical relationship between science and society and the lessons that might be learnt from scientific study in developing a methodology (...)

  8. Science and Ethics.Bernard E. Rollin - 2006 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
In Science and Ethics, Bernard Rollin examines the ideology that denies the relevance of ethics to science. Providing an introduction to basic ethical concepts, he discusses a variety of ethical issues that are relevant to science and how they are ignored, to the detriment of both science and society. These include research on human subjects, animal research, genetic engineering, biotechnology, cloning, xenotransplantation, and stem cell research. Rollin also explores the ideological agnosticism that scientists have (...)

Science can (also) be studied as responsible and rational human activity, guided and legitimated by its own normative system: a finite and ordered set of norms and values for agents in a given field of activity. Such norms of inquiry are needed for a rationality requirement of science, which also presupposes a partial agreement on (acceptance of, respect for) these norms between scientists and their social environment. The notions of scientific accountability, autonomy, and freedom of inquiry are elucidated (...)

Social science and ethics review: A question of practice not principle.Stuart G. Nicholls, Jamie Brehaut & Raphae Saginur - 2012 - Research Ethics 8 (2):71-78.
In his article ‘The case against ethics review in the social sciences’, Schrag asserts that the social sciences should not be subject to ethical review. He recounts a number of examples where ethical review has seemingly failed. He further suggests some alternative models for dealing with ethical review in the social sciences. Finally, he concludes, and we concur, that there is a lack of empirical evidence as to the benefit of research ethics review.

This article sketches descriptive and normative components of a theory of ethical value. The normative component, which receives the lion’s share of attention, is developed by adapting Laudan’s levels of scientific discourse. The resulting levels of ethical discourse can be critically addressed through the use of inductive inference, falsification, and causal inference. These techniques are likewise appropriate to the corresponding levels of scientific discourse.

Evaluating the science and ethics of research on humans: a guide for IRB members.Dennis John Mazur - 2007 - Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press.
Biomedical research on humans is an important part of medical progress. But, when lives are at risk, safety and ethical practices need to be the top priority. The need for the committees that regulate and oversee such research -- institutional review boards, or IRBs -- is growing. IRB members face difficult decisions every day. Evaluating the Science and Ethics of Research on Humans is a guide for new and veteran members of IRBs that will help them better understand (...)

Business, Science and Ethics: A Case Study in the Necessary Evolution of Methodology.Thomas I. White - 2009 - Between the Species 13 (9):8.
Alasdair MacIntyre and David DeGrazia have explored the question of how sophisticated dolphins’ cognitive abilities are, and these thinkers have taken positions based on a flawed methodology that either assert or imply that dolphins fall below humans when it comes to cognitive sophistication and moral consideration. Timothy Fort uses MacIntyre’s characterization of dolphins in his discussion of the value of biology to business ethics. He thereby makes inaccurate and unsupportable claims, and perpetuates a stereotype about dolphins grounded in unintentional (...)

The science and ethics of placebo in pediatric psychopharmacology.Lawrence Scahill, Mary Solanto & Joseph McGuire - 2008 - Ethics and Behavior 18 (2-3):266 – 285.
Pediatric psychopharmacology is a relatively new science. Although the use of psychotropic medications in children has risen in the past decade, there are few standard treatments for serious psychiatric or developmental disorders of childhood. The relative absence of standard treatments is further complicated by the fact that many of the agents used in pediatric psychopharmacology have been adapted from other fields. Therefore, investigators have a responsibility to make incremental progress from concept through pilot studies and large-scale, multisite efficacy and (...)

The Interlacing of Science and Ethics.Michela Bella - 2020 - European Journal of Pragmatism and American Philosophy 12 (1).
Richard Rorty has long been perceived and interpreted as a provocative and groundbreaking philosopher. However, an approach that he calls ‘eirenic’ emerges in his writings. This eirenism should not be confused with a form of sophisticated relativism, but rather it should be understood as a consequence of the profound anti-foundational conviction and anti-authoritarian sentiment that feeds his thought, as well as his reading of the relations of science and ethics. In this article, I focus on Rorty’s recovery of (...)

The teaching of the ethical implications of scientific advances in science courses for undergraduates has significant advantages for both science and non-science majors. The article describes three courses taught by the author as examples of the concept, and examines the disadvantages as well as the advantages. A significant advantage of this approach is that many students take the courses primarily because of the ethical component who would not otherwise take science. A disadvantage is less time in (...)

The issue whether science can be correctly submitted to ethical judgment has been widely debated especially in the 1960s. Those who denied the legitimacy of such a judgment stressed that this would entail an undue limitation of the freedom of science; those who defended such a limitation laid stress on the great dangers that an uncontrolled growth of scientific knowledge has already produced and would continue to produce against humankind. This sterile debate can be settled by recognizing that (...)
