Kant's theory of space includes the idea that straight lines and planes can be defined in Euclidean geometry by a concept which nowadays has been revived in the field of fractal geometry: the concept of self-similarity. Absolute self-similarity of straight lines and planes distinguishes Euclidean space from any other geometrical space. Einstein missed this fact in his attempt to refute Kant's theory of space in his article ‘Geometrie und Erfahrung’. Following Hilbert and Schlick he took it for granted, mistakenly, that (...) purely geometrical definitions of the concepts of straight line and plane are not feasible, except as “implicit definitions”. Therefore Einstein's criticism is not persuasive. (shrink)

Wittgenstein n'a eu de cesse de critiquer la distinction entre géométrie pure et géométrie appliquée. Cette distinction a été notoirement défendue par les positivistes logiques qui, dans le cadre d'une théorie renouvelée de l'a priori, entendaient marquer une séparation nette entre les mathématiques (systèmes formels non interprétés) et la physique (systèmes interprétés, dotés d'une signification factuelle ou empirique). Les raisons de ce partage perdent leur évidence si l'on envisage la géométrie en action, comme une pratique où les (...) règles ne peuvent pas être considérées indépendamment des « coups » qu'elles règlent effectivement. Cette conception « syntaxique » de la géométrie éclaire la signification réelle du « conventionnalisme géométrique » attribué à Poincaré ; elle fait comprendre du même coup les distorsions introduites par les interprétations qui se sont appuyées de façon implicite ou explicite sur la distinction entre le pur et l'appliqué. Recentemente diversi studi hanno mostrato come la distanza tra i Grundlagen e le precedenti pubblicazioni di Hilbert non sia tanto abissale come ritenuto in passato, ma vi sia una significativa consequenzialità con la teoria dei campi numerici. Nel ribadire questa visione, si intende mostrare come i risultati ottenuti da Hilbert, in particolare sui teoremi di Pappo e di Desargues, siano conseguenza di una ricerca più ampia sulla possibilità di introdurre all’interno della geometria dei sistemi numerici atti a coordinatizzare il piano (...) o lo spazio. Nello sviluppo della ricerca hanno avuto un ruolo determinante la scoperta di Hurwitz delle uniche quattro algebre di divisione normate e le idee maturate, già agli inizi della sua carriera, sulla finitezza degli strumenti da utilizzare in geometria, in particolare la rinuncia al concetto di continuità e la limitazione a sistemi numerici ordinati e numerabili. Nelle conclusioni dei Grundlagen, Hilbert rimarca l’importanza di dimostrare l’impossibilità delle assunzioni, tra cui l’impossibilità di determinare, attraverso solo relazioni geometriche di incidenza, dei sistemi numerici ordinati che abbiano le stesse proprietà dei quaternioni e degli ottonioni rispetto alle operazioni dell’aritmetica. In the middle part of his Brouillon Project on conics, Girard Desargues develops the theory of the traversale, a notion that generalizes the Apollonian diameter and allows to give a unified treatment of the three kinds of conics. We showed elsewhere that it leads Desargues to a complete theory of projective polarity for conics. The present article, which shall close our study of the Brouillon Project, is devoted to the last part of the text, in which Desargues puts his theory (...) of the traversal into practice by giving a very elegant tratment of the classical theory of parameters and foci. This will lead us to show that Desargues’ proofs can only be understood if one accepts that he reasons in a resolutely projective framework, completely assimilating elements at infinity to those at finite distance in his proofs.
