En Afrique subsaharienne, les naissances gémellaires sont entourées de nombreuses perceptions et de diverses pratiques culturelles. La présente étude qui fait suite à des travaux (quantitatifs) en lien avec le taux d’accouchement gémellaire ainsi que la surmortalité des enfants jumeaux s’intéresse aux perceptions, connaissances et attitudes des Subsahariens concernant les naissances gémellaires. Elle analyse des entretiens qualitatifs recueillis au Burkina Faso et au Sénégal auprès de jumeaux, de parents de jumeaux et d’acteurs associatifs, médicaux et religieux (94 entretiens). Les principaux (...) résultats indiquent que le jumeau subsaharien demeure un être « extraordinaire », au carrefour de plusieurs mondes culturels ; ils indiquent aussi qu’il est moins craint et moins menacé de nos jours, mais peut-être plus exposé qu’autrefois par une mendicité chronique des mères. This article aims to examine Pierre Charron’s conception of solitude, a task which is complicated by the fact that this conception underwent several changes between the two editions of De la sagesse. Unlike the 1601 edition, the 1604 edition includes passages on the importance of the social dimension of the good life, which may look like an exhortation to actively participate in social life in order to acquire civil prudence. In order to clarify the Charronian position on this issue, I (...) undertake a comparative analysis of the two editions of De la Sagesse, as well as an enquiry into the letters sent to a Doctor of the Sorbonne and to Gabriel Michel de La Rochemaillet, in which Charron deepens his reflections on solitude. I will show that Charron describes solitude not only as a physical separation from a civil context, but also as an emotional autonomy which can be reached everywhere. Charron’s perspective on solitude is also the result of his reading of previous philosophers, such as Seneca, Aristotle and Michel de Montaigne, as well as an analysis of Renaissance discussions of the active and contemplative lives. Aussi bien la sensibilité végétarienne que l’enthousiasme que met Jean-Antoine Gleïzès (1773-1843) pour propager son « régime des herbes » se comprennent mieux une fois qu’est mise au jour la problématique au centre de l’évangile de la régénération sociale : justice et égalité. C’est à l’aune de cette problématique, que l’œuvre de Gleïzès connaîtra la postérité, en France et ailleurs.

Considérée comme une donnée immédiate chez l'homme, la nature humaine ne s'actualise que dans le monde de la culture. Ce qui signifie que la culture intègre et oriente la nature humaine au point qu'elle devienne une seconde nature. De ce fait, parler d'une actualisation de la nature humaine par la culture, c'est aborder une question philosophique universelle. Cette orientation de la conduite humaine dans le sens de la normativité semble s'inscrire au centre des thèmes de l'éthique contemporaine en tant que (...) défis à relever d'une humanité en crise. The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly led to changes in the mode of teaching, learning and assessments in most tertiary institutions worldwide. Notably, non-invigilated summative assessments became predominant. These changes heightened anxiety and depression, especially among individuals with less resilient coping mechanism. We explored the perceptions and experiences of mental health difficulties of students in tertiary education regarding non-invigilated alternative assessments in comparison to invigilated assessments. A pragmatic, mixed method cross sectional design was conducted online via Qualtrics. Thematic analysis of text was (...) carried out using NVivo 12. In the quantitative analysis, univariable and multivariable ordinal logistic models were used to examine the potential factors for preference among students in higher education. A total of 380 Nursing and Social Science students responded to the survey. Approximately 77% of students perceived non-invigilated assessments to be less stressful compared to invigilated exams. Age, course of study, stage of studies, and number of units enrolled per semester were identified as significant drivers for students’ perceived preference for non-invigilated assessments. There was an inverse relationship between the perception of stress associated with invigilated exams and the age of students. For instance, students aged between 18-24 were 5 times more likely to prefer non-invigilated exams compared to those aged 55 or more. Comparatively, students in early stages of studies had higher preference for non-invigilated assessments. However, there was a preference reversal for students enrolled in 2 or less units per semester. Social sciences students were two times more likely to prefer non-invigilated examinations to invigilated examinations compared to nursing students. The findings reinforce the use of alternative assessments in higher education as a mitigating agency to lessen the mental health burden of tertiary students in post COVID-19 era. (shrink)

The subject of this paper is the issue of alchemy in the scientific activity of Adam A. Kochanski. Polish Jesuit, Adam Kochanski S J was an unusual scholar in the Polish science of the 17th century. Kochanski was an excellent mathematician, one of his greatest achievement in mathematics is the solution of the famous squaring of the circle. He published his mathematical works in "Acta Eruditorium", one of the first scientific journals in 17th century Europe. Kochanski was a professor of (...) mathematics in Germany, Italy, Prague, Olomouc, Wroclaw and Warszawa. An interesting part Kochanski's activity is his correspondence with many scholars, mathematicans and philosophers, for example the exchange of letters with German philosopher and mathematican Gottfried W. Frugal literary legacy of Adam Naruszewicz (be was an author of fairy-tales) has never been a subject of circumstantial research. It has never aroused any acknowledgement among literary historians. This very fact encouraged me to deeper learning of fairy-tale craft of this outstanding poet. I also came to the conclusion that particular qualities of fairy-tales by Naruszewicz would be more meaningful if I made a comparison of his creative work features with those of other representatives of this literary genre of (...) the second half of the 18th century, i.e. Stanislaw Trembecki, Ignacy Krasicki and Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz. Although Naruszewicz takes a substantial place in the Age of Enlightenment it seems that certain features of his poetry present in the fairy-tales can be found in works of certain representatives of this genre; his fairy-tales are an interesting stage of story-telling branch of this literary form. Praca poświęcona jest problematyce wartości ideowo-znaczeniowych i estetyczno-przestrzennych w procesie kształtowania architektury. Pole badawcze skoncentrowano na wybranych dziełach Adama Lisika związanych z architekturą sakralną. Praca ma charakter rozważań natury teologiczno-estetycznej, stanowi _resumé _i wyraz głębokiego szacunku dla wieloletniego, bogatego dorobku twórczego Adama Lisika oraz swoistego rodzaju przekaz dla architektów poszukujących własnych ścieżek wiodących do rozwiązywania problemów związanych z kształtowaniem warstwy znaczeniowej przestrzeni architektury sakralnej. Intencją autora niniejszej wypowiedzi jest także zwrócenie uwagi na powiązania architektury z człowiekiem w subtelnej (...) materii jego odczuć i refleksji. Wszak człowiek to nie tylko zbiór atomów i związków chemicznych, to również obdarzona psychiką, poszukująca transcendentalnych wartości swego życia istota duchowa. Ze względu na objętość praca została podzielona na dwie części. Część I zawiera wprowadzenie, opis metody badań, tezę, stan badań oraz opis jednego z przykładów obiektów architektury sakralnej Adama Lisika stanowiący zapowiedź do dalszych rozważań, zamieszczonych w części II pracy, w której zawarto także podsumowanie przeprowadzonych rozważań, wnioski oraz bibliografię. Cílem této práce je ukázat Fergusonovy základní teze týkající se pojetí lidské přirozenosti a zkoumat, jaké z nich plynou závěry a jestli mohou tyto závěry neproblematicky koexistovat. V první části práce se chci pokusit najít vnitřní jednotu ve Fergusonově teorii lidské přirozenosti a ukázat, že Fergusonovo pojetí člověka je konklusivní. Zkoumání přirozenosti člověka je pro Fergusona velmi těsně spjato se zkoumání vztahu jedince a společnosti. Právě v pojetí tohoto vztahu vzniká problémová situace, pokud budeme chtít podržet Fergusonovu verzi a přidat (...) k ní teorii morálního citu. Na rozbor této problematiky se zaměřím v poslední části práce. Práce se zabývá Fergusonovou teorií spadající pouze do období, kdy napsal "An Essay on the History of Civil Society". (shrink)

Wiek XVII zaznaczył się w filozofii europejskiej wydarzeniami, które doprowadziły do trwałych zmian w intelektualnym obliczu starego kontynentu. Na owe wydarzenia składają się nie tylko prace Kartezjusza, otwierające przestrzeń do badań nad filozofią świadomości, lecz także procesy związane z powstaniem nowożytnego przyrodoznawstwa. Zostały one zapoczątkowane przez odkrycia Galileusza i znalazły swoje zwieńczenie w dziele Izaaka Newtona: Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica. Cechą charakterystyczną wspomnianego stulecia jest żywa wymiana myśli naukowej poprzez zakładanie towarzystw naukowych, jak również przez korespondencji prowadzoną pomiędzy przedstawicielami różnych (...) dziedzin nauki, filozofii i sztuki. O rozmiarach tej działalności świadczy chociażby zbiór 15 tysięcy listów zgromadzonych w Bibliotece Królewskiej w Hanowerze, które składają się na korespondencji niemieckiego filozofa Gottfrieda Wilhelma Leibniza. Spuścizna korespondencyjna zgromadzona w bibliotekach i rozsiana po różnych archiwach jest cennym źródłem materiałów do badań nad filozofią XVII wieku. (shrink)

In his latest book, Adam Grobler gives an ingenious account of the main issues of contemporary epistemology, and puts forward an original sandwich theory of knowledge. The paper brings to light pragmatic threads of Grobler’s views, including his approach to scepticism, to the justification of induction, and to the notion of truth. It is suggested that the idea of relative truth, currently rigorously elaborated by John MacFarlane, would be more useful for his purposes than the notion of truth as superassertibility (...) proposed by Crispin Wright. In this text I discuss and debate Adam Jonkisz’s book Questions and Answers: Set-theoretic approach. I consider, among other things, the problem of the minimal component of question, of the division of questions, of the specificity of existential questions. I put forward a thesis that every question is a question to be completed, in the sense that every question expresses a ‘gap’ in our knowledge that should be filled. Artykuł dotyczy zachowanych w Archiwum Państwowym w Łodzi, w zespole 592 Archiwum rodziny Bartoszewiczów, dwóch rękopisów autorstwa Adama Bartoszewicza, seniora rodu: Znakomite niewiasty polskie, a szczególnie znane w dziejach równie jak i na polu literackim oraz Poczet sławnych kobiet polskich a mianowicie uczonych literatek alfabetycznie ułożony przez A.[dama] B.[artoszewicza] 1859 r. [- skorowidz nazwisk]. Ich wspólnym mianownikiem są dzieje polskich kobiet, z naciskiem położonym na twórczość literacką i przekładową do lat siedemdziesiątych XIX wieku. Celem szkicu jest opis zawartości obu (...) jednostek pod kątem sposobu tworzenia przez autora potencjalnego słownika, jego źródeł informacji, kwerend prasowych i kształtu inwentarza. Nie wiadomo, jakie plany wydawnicze wiązały się z brudnopisami, jednak można potraktować je jako ważny materiał źródłowy w historii budowania w wieku XIX wiedzy o piśmiennictwie kobiecym. (shrink)

W archiwum osobistym Adama Tarna (1902–1975) – pierwszego redaktora naczelnego miesięcznika „Dialog”, tłumacza, krytyka, powieściopisarza, dramaturga – znajdują się zapiski z luźnymi pomysłami do utworów dramatycznych, notatki do nieukończonej książki o Czechowie, a także niewielkie próby literackie – poprawiane, odkładane i na powrót rozwijane. Materiały te udostępniane dzięki uprzejmości spadkobierców są cennym świadectwem procesu twórczego i ewolucji pisarstwa redaktora naczelnego „Dialogu”. W kontekście debiutanckiej i jedynej ukończonej powieści Tarna _Obraz ojca w czterech ramach _(1934) intrygującym utworem jest zachowana w (...) archiwum nieukończona powieść _Kameleon_. Artykuł charakteryzuje materiały znajdujące się w archiwum osobistym Tarna. Pozwala wniknąć w jego „wewnętrzne laboratorium” pisarskie i odczytać je m.in. w perspektywie biograficznej. Datowanie zgromadzonych materiałów można przyjąć jedynie orientacyjnie. Najwcześniejsza zachowana próba prozatorska zapisana po francusku pochodzi prawdopodobnie jeszcze z okresu międzywojennego. Ostatnie zapiski pochodzą z okresu emigracyjnego po 1968 roku, kiedy Tarn pracował nad nieukończoną książką o Czechowie. (shrink)

The article concerns the epistemological views of Adam Grobler contained in his book Epistemologia (2019). The first part of the article lists the basic goals that were set for the philosophical theory of knowledge, namely, distinguishing types of knowledge, discovering the essence of knowledge, describing and assessing human epistemic situation in the world, considering the most general idea of knowledge, confronting the issue of global skepticism, grounding human knowledge, considering the issue of starting point in philosophy, showing the genesis of (...) human knowledge (Kant, Husserl), considering the phenomenon–reality opposition and the opposition of categories of being and categories of thinking, abandoning the maximalistic epistemology in favour of naturalized epistemology. In the second part of the text, Adam Grobler’s epistemological position is diagnosed as (pragmatically motivated) skepticism. (shrink)

The dominant contemporary interpretation of Adam Smith’s thought endeavors to show his anti-state attitude. According to this interpretation, Smith, as the father of economics would also be an opponent of state interference in the activity of private entities. The purpose of this work is a comprehensive presentation of the social system described by a Scottish philosopher. This task is accomplished by drawing attention to Smith’s views on the state and the law, as well as on his participation in the creation (...) of an area of knowledge known then as political economy. In order to reconcile the seemingly inconsistent views presented in Smith’s most famous works, the main subject of this analysis are the less frequently studied _Lectures on Jurisprudence_. This book, which offers Smith’s views on the role of the state and law, is the key to the correct reading of the thesis put in _Theory of Moral Sentiments_ and _An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations_. The social system emerging from these works referred to by Smith as the civil government, can in retrospect be regarded as the progenitor of liberal democracy. The state and the law play a vital role in the economic life of this system. (shrink)

In this paper I first present in a few sentences the main theses of Ajdukiewicz’s theory of questions, then I briefly express the main theses of Professor Jonkisz’s book and the indisputable advantages of this work. Then I put forward my objections to some theoretical solutions adopted by the Author, namely the assumption that datum questionis is sequence of components without any syntactic requirements, the assumption about the special character of the so called generalized negation and the assumption that no (...) ontological assumptions are adopted in the work. The adoption of the language of set theory is already a privileging of a set theory ontology. (shrink)

In Adam Smith’s Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations the term ‘rational’ occurs only twice. Neither of these uses assigns the property of rationality either to human beings or to economic agents. Despite that, Smith is widely recognised as the founder of modern mainstream economics, a science which is defined by the assumption of the rationality of an economic agent. This paper aims to locate and discuss the notion of rationality which is implied by Smith’s (...) work. To achieve that a double-track approach is taken. First, the current paper reconstructs Smith’s general view on human nature which was presented mainly in his earlier book The Theory of Moral Sentiments. This is followed by a discussion of Smith’s theses on selected mechanisms which drive the economy as presented in The Wealth of Nations. (shrink)

This study examines the intertextual influence of the courtroom spoken genre with the written genre used by judge’s summing up and lawyers’ closing arguments in Ethiopian Criminal court trial. In doing so, it employs the relational and comparison-expository structuring models. The relational struc- turing is used to give emphasis to the manner in which evidence items bear on particular issues and shows how evidence items are related to each other and to major facts in issues of judge’s summing-up while the (...) comparison-expository structure is to intertextually link the spoken genres of the two opposing lawyers’ views with the Ethiopian criminal law written statutes. The findings of the study suggest that mixed rhetorical strategies, the judge’s relational summing up and the lawyers’ comparison-expository closing arguments, are more effective than a strict narrative strategy in addressing the final judgment of the argumenta- tion.
